Finally, some real news about the Bollywood robot flick that everyone's been rumoring about. It looks like famed director S. Shankar has locked in "South India's darling" Rajnikanth, pictured here in front of a glowy yellow background, as the main actor in his groundbreaking sci-fi film Robot.
The film has a monster budget of one billion rupees, and will be produced in three languages in the UK. Here's what the proud producers have to say about it:
Robot will be the grandest and most entertaining film ever made in Indian cinema and be produced in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi and be a high-tech film with the use of the state-of-the-art technology.Image by AP

If Ranikanth doesn't dance on a snowbound mountain with aforementioned robot, I will be bitterly, bitterly heartbroken.
I mean, Hrithik Roshan cavorted on a hill with both kids *and* that spent body condom of an alien in Koi.. Mil Gaya and it was AWESOME.
Wow
::insert lame Indian/Bollywood stereotype involving dancing, singing, convenience stores and Cricket here::
wow. people actually know Rajnikanth outside India. 0.o
*awkward....*
but anyway, he can dare to make such movies for two reasons.
1. he is considered a southern mega star. whatever movie he makes isn't likely to make a loss.
2. his daughter is actually some animation expert or something like that and is now beginning to add her talents to his movies.
Andy Garcia having a bad day?
I like Bollywood. There, I said it. Now that that's out of the way, it's good to see something that may boost Asian film popularity in the West that doesn't involve said singing, dancing, Kung Fu, or Cricket. I'll definitely watch this.
@zenpoet: lol, nice. It's the nose, isn't it?
Technically, South Indian cinema is not 'Bollywood'. It's a distinct industry of its own. Bollywood typically refers to Hindi movies specifically made in Bombay. And yes, Koi...mil gaya (The ET with the dancing blue alien) was freakin' awesome.
Finally we get to find out how Hindus et al. defeat robots on THEIR turf!
"how Hindus et al. defeat robots"
Hindus? Where exactly does religion come into this????
I know i'm not the first to think of it, BUT, can you really get the image out of your head? a terminator-type robot sings about the end of days and dances around trees
@Kildavimes: why did you do that? now i can't get that image out of my head. -_-
I'm very excited! Especially since I grew up in South India watching Rajnikanth's movies and love SF. Here's a longer commentary/musing at my blog: [arunkey.journalspace.com]
@luke.i.am.ur.mother: oopps...truly sorry. try to think about something worse: the terminator as Gov. oh, yea.....
Oh god...rajni in Io9....
Rajni is one reason i have miserable days with myhousemate. hes a Rajni freak. Rajni is practically God of south indians...technically hes is the biggest Asian star right now, getting more moolah than Jacky Chan and Amita Bachan. They even destroyed a theatr in Malaysia when his last movie was delayed. He is in CGI in an period animation movie made by his daugther.
Bollywood is for North Indian cinema.
Kollywood is for South Indian Tamil movie industry.
Hindu is a religion.
There has been a variety of SF and SF-esque movies from India along its illustrious history of movie making. it is and will always be the gigantous movie maker of all time because they make movies in more languages the world combined.
Sigh...i jst hope Shankars Robot gonna be good.
