The Hoff, wearing buckets of makeup, fences with killer bots in Star Crash. The worst of the late 70s Star Wars knockoffs, Crash features lots of Harryhausen-style stop motion animation alongside widescreen space battles. Caroline Munroe has really shiny hair and low-cut tops. But my favorite character is the Southern-accented android (Hamilton Camp), who looks like Darth Vader but is named Elle and wears a rainbow flag on the back of his belt. Click through for a video of the climactic battle and Elle's daring escape.

which one is the Hoff. the one with the metal body or the metal face?
anyway, i'm off to search for this classic at the local dvd shop. no sane person can resist this level of awesomeness.
The Hoff is wearing more eyeliner than the female character. Who is that other Hoff-look-alike? He is brilliant.
@mydogisdexter: The not-quite-Hoff is child evangelist turned actor, Marjoe Gortner, I believe (link).
This reminds me of another 80's Star Wars rip off "Battle Beyond the Stars". I think it was made for TV.

Can io9 start a post on the "so bad it's good" classic from the 80's.
The eye makeup on Hoff is really hilarious.
Okay, I (kind of) retract my comments from the survey post about resurrecting MST3K. I'd love to see Joel OR Mike and the bots tear into this one.
On the condition that they get Trace Beaulieu back too.
Why do the men look so feminine in that film?
I think I remember seeing this when I was a kid. I also think it was shown in 3D with the Polaroid 3D glasses.
long live the gortner! that ugly bastard!
thank god 'the starkiller' didn't turn out like this or my life would be much different.
With this post io9 has secured a spot in the pantheon of Greatest Sci-Fi Blogs of All Time.
Dear lord, Hoff and Light sabres == win.
Hoff > Hayden Christiansen
This movie is awesome, in a godawful way. Hot chicks running around in "spacekinis" fighting robot amazons? I mean, seriously- it's that aw(ful|some).
My personal favorite moment is when the main characters survive an attack by "the most powerful weapon in the universe". What does this awesome power do, you ask? Make everything red and lava-lamp-like, and the main characters dizzy.
Also: in true storytelling hackery, the main character (not the Hoff) constantly gains new powers as they get written into different corners.
I heard Lucas is doing a prequel to this, but I feel it will leave the true Star Crash fans disappointed.
Still better than Jar Jar.
@arkowi:
Ok seriously, I LOL'ed hard at that.
@gargoyle93: Nice find on Marjoe.
Seems he is big in Germany too. Just like the Hoff.
Conspiracy?
I'm seeing an exec somewhere looking at the dailies and saying, "I got a fever, a fever for...more eye makeup..."
@MADFLAVA
'Battle Beyond the Stars' wasn't made for TV, I don't think. I think it was a fully fledged feature film. It was directed by a guy called Jimmy Murukami. I had lunch with him once, so I am not going to say anything bad about it...just that it had John Boy Walton in it, and some 'interesting' spaceship designs...
Nope.. Battle Beyond the Stars was a released movie... and its way better than this thing could ever be... but hey this is quality crap and looks fun to watch on a drunken night with a bowl of popcorn and your favorite geek girl by your side.
hi, I was part of the cast, as at that time I helped Mr. Armando Valcauda (spfx) to build the spaceship managing to make them looking as the ones in StarWars, but, more "coloured"...
It was a great experience, expecially if you think this was the unique try of an italian movie to imitate sci-fi movies a-la-USA!
that's not the Hoff. it's either his mom or sister i think.
David Hasselhoff is probably better with a lightsaber than some jedi!
Wow, that scene is so bad I was momentarily blinded....
And yeah, that ain't the Hoff...that's his frickin' twin sister, all made up like a whore 'n junk......
And they all have the serious, determined looks on their faces, as if thinking what a landmark epic work this is going to be.......hilarious!
This is one of my favorite movies in a MST3K sort of way. One of the best are the plate glass windows which they shoot a rocket through filled with soldiers! And without the obligatory computer saying "atmospheric shield activated".
@t3knomanser:
"Awfulsome" is now my new favorite word, supplanting "craptacular". It describes those clips to a T.
