Cloverfield hasn't even made it to theaters yet, and knockoffs are already appearing on DVD. Case in point is Monster, which features a semi-Cloverfieldian cover, although it actually shows the monster — which looks like a ginormous Octopus. The movie features characters running around a city while blabbering about the footage from the destruction appearing on YouTube. If a giant monster starts beating on your city, are you going to take time to upload shaky-cam footage you shot of it? Having the most popular video of the day might not be so important when your ass is on the line.
Holy duplicates, Batman! This couldn't look more like Cloverfield unless they called it Cloverdale and set it in New York City instead of Tokyo. They even use the same font to plug to direct-to-DVD date of 01-15-08. I guess they're hoping that their three day lead on J.J. Abrams' film will fill up their coffers with bewildering video store browsers. Not surprisingly, it's from the same director who brought you Snakes on a Train. We can't wait to see his next flicks: Space Journey and Tungsten Man.

I love the fact that this movie is set in 2003. It's an alternate history of Japanese monster movies!
Coming soon to a Scifi Channel near you.
Oh my god!
This movie actually has more suckatude than the original movie that its knocking off.
That's right...I said it...I believe Cloverfield is going to suck.
I'll still see it though....I suck also. :(
@iamtehawesome: Nu-uh, Cloverfield is actually the new Star Trek movie. Kirk's shirt gets ripped as he fights the monster as they travel back in time to save Spock's grandmother.
Cloverfield is most definitely going to suck. When the X-Games and ESPN co-opt your idea you know you're in for a Sci-Fi Channel Saturday afternoon special.
I think CF is going to blow chunks out its personified nose. Remember, this is the guy who brought you The Pallbearer, that mess of a shitebagfest.
Does this time travelling monster, by any chance, have the head of a whaling ship, and wings of a bat?
The Cloverfield Monster: Thee stupidest thing to hit my eyes since Flaming Carrot.
cfield is going to blow chunks out its personified nose.
"From the director of The Pallbearer....."
It's the Carnosaur Effect.
Don't hate on the Cloverfield monster. It's all about what the monster *does* not what it *looks* like. Oh who am I kidding? I only like monsters for their looks.
@annalee:
too bad we'll never really see it.
I pray to all that is holy, please don't let Cloverfield be the waste of my $10 that I Am Legend was.
That's right...I said it...I Am Legend sucked!
Man, I'm angry today. :\
@annalee: Well, I'll give you one thing about the Cloverfield Monster ... I think the concept makes it the scariest monster ever made ... just the fact that if you ever see a Belleen Whale in the water, you might get really think of the Cloverfield Monster and I think that's what they were going for. Make something that you could see on a regular basis, but make it horrifying and just seeing the normal thing may freak you out. I'll give them credit... I don't think I'll ever trust bellens again unless I see their whole body.
I admire this gentleman's gumption.
Kevin, I was thinking of Snakes on a Train when I started to read the post, so it does not surprise me that it comes from the same douchenozzle.
I was thinking Shadout Mapes on a train.
Sorry.
Just giving a shout out to ma Mapes.
Got to love a company whose whole business model depends on people mistaking your product for another one, ala cuckoo's eggs.
@Eac_O_System: How often do regular people see baleen whales?
If they were to rip off Cloverfield, wouldn't it have been smarter to use Cthulu as the monster?
(That's what I hoped to see in Cloverfield, but noooo)
I'd heard hints before about the Cloverfield project taking some Lovecraftian notes, so I'm still holding out for it making good on that not-really-a-claim in more ways than "it came from the sea".
For bonus points, it'll hopefully have folks turn into slushy bog-monsters that can maul folks and pass on slushy bog-monsteritis, or can lump together to form larger slushy bog-monsters (thus making good on incorporating the [Tagruato.jp] subsidiaries).
Monster > Cloverfield
OMG the 15th is tomorrow!
