Here's the first picture of Mulder and Scully in the long-awaited second X-Files movie. (Click through for the full image.) Director/creator Chris Carter confirmed in a new interview that the movie is missing all of the long-running "mythology" and conspiracy elements from the original show. But he also seemed to hint there would be no aliens, would-be colonists or otherwise, in the film. No clue what the actual plot will be, but we're hoping it's still hardcore science fiction.

hmm. I'll jump in line to see this, but doesn't it feel a little late for an X-Files 2?
@xrikazen: Better late than never, my friend. I'm not even a hardcore fan, but I've been longing for this day for a very long time and I'm just glad to have my longing satiated.
Its a one off. If you read the article he says they are getting away from the hardcore mythos which he knew turned people off to the show in the end and focusing on a movie like the one off episodes they did.
Personally I think this is a very smart move. Its been 6 years since the ending, people who where teens when the show started are now married possibly with kids almost the same age as they where. Not to mention the alien plotline toward the end got stupidly convoluted being re-written yearly to cover the main cast leaving and coming back.
And face the facts, some of the best episodes of the show had nothing to do with the conspiracy.
I think they needed to wait to get the bad taste of season 9 (which I didn't watch. My X-Files ends very nicely with kissing, a baby, and the Lone Gunmen alive and well!) out of everyone's mouths.
I'm now ready to see Mulder & Scully in action again, myself, and they look great. *small squee*
I stopped watching after the seventh season, because of all the conspiracy bullshit. Those were the least favorite episodes, so if this movie is indeed more like a one-off episode, I will so be there with my Mulder and Scully love.
The conspiracy/alien mythos couldn't be sustained after the first two years. The plots became stupid and pointless just to maintain a mystery. I'm glad their doing a one-off, which I thought were the only episodes worth watching.
most sci-fi actress on TV look like they lost their way to a soft corn porn casting, but Gillian Anderson is that rare unconventionally beautiful woman in the genre...and still gorgeous, wow
No Jumping in Jumper 2?
I liked the mythology and CSM was by far my favorite character. However, given that the episodes that comprise it take up 4 DVD sets, I can see where a one-off is a way better plan, especially given the fifteen or so years since the show started. On that note, Mulder and Scully both look great.
@Falconfire: Yeah killing the Loan Gunmen was one of the stupidest stunts they pulled the entire shoes run wasnt it. Never mind the fact their own series never had a shot thanks to 9/11 and being pre-emptied and moved every damn week, the characters themselves would have made excellent movie fodder.
It felt like a last shot at tugging at heartstrings, something that was woefully unneeded.
No conspiracy mythos?
THANK GOD!
That unsustainable stuff is what drove me away in the first place.
OK, so it's a one off but what will be the mystery? Cryptocreature? Icky mutant? Urban legend?
I always liked the icky mutant episodes and Urban legends myself. The Cryptocreatures were never really all that interesting and could easily turn into Lake Placid, or a sci-fi Saturday feature (Giant scorpions! Giant Snakes! Giant mummies!)
damn italics!
No link to the interview?
They said a long time ago that this would be a "freak of the week" type of deal.
I'm all in; I've been hoping for this for ages!
Has anyone played the X-Files: Resist or Serve game for the PS2? I grabbed a used copy yesterday and plan on putting some time in on it this weekend and just wanted to know what peoples thought.
For a quick look at some of the best non-mythos episodes, check out the one's with Tyler Labine's stoner character.
One of my favs: [imdb.com]
Resist or Serve was pretty decent, but I got stuck in one place and never played the game again (I am terrible at video games). As a huge fan, I'm really excited for this movie, and while yes, I would've liked the show to end with that marvelous back-tracking shot of Mulder and Scully kissing (with William between them), it's up there with the greatest shows of all time, and many of the episodes are timelss. A little scared about the casting of Xzibit though...
@Falconfire:
"the hardcore mythos which he knew turned people off to the show in the end "
I think that he meant "stupid religious bullshit". It's what made the series go downhill for me. They practically ended the series once Mulder discovered the conspiracy. At that point is when a christian religion (Catholic) is weaved into the show, over and over again. It's hard to watch the show at that point because every other episode is religious.
I too heard that Chris was going to leave Aliens out of it, and it's supposedly more of a return to the horror/unexplained kind of stuff. I'll love it I'm sure, as long as he leaves the stupid religious bullshit out of the series.
@pinafore:
Gillian Anderson is indeed hot. Mmmm hmmmmm.
@Falconfire:
I too thought it was lame how they killed them off. Definitely a move to tug at the heartstrings of the viewers. LAME!
My heart leapt at the sight of this photo. Scully!!
I kind of liked the conspiracy stuff, but it got to a point where I started to feel that they had no cohesive story that they were actually sticking to and were just making it up on a season to season basis. That is one thing I like about lost is they have the story planned out and actually know where they are going with it.
But all I can picture now is him trying to get Scully to his house for some Californication.
I think everyone pretty much agrees on this:
Old conspiracy (Colonization; The Syndicate) >>>>>>>> New Conspiracy (Super Soldiers).
@gina: I know! And she's looking great! I wish she'd get her own show, or just act in more movies. She was amazing in House of Mirth. [www.imdb.com]
(Spoiler alert for those who haven't finished the series.)
I'm curious how they're going to deal with Mulder and Scully's status as essentially fugitives. The show ended with them escaping attack helicopters and going on the run. Mulder was sentanced to death for the "murder" of a super soldier, and neither of them, under these circumstances, is probably too welcome at the FBI. Are they just investigating these things on their own now for fun? Or will there be some hook that gets them back into the bureau?
Let's see. The series ended with Mulder escaping from prison, awating a lethal injection. So exactly how is he going to get back into the bureau?
More important, what about Skinner, who helped him escape?
@EBone: As did Scully, Dogget, Reyes, and Kirsch. Lots of 'splainin to do, me thinks. Hopefully they can just cover it with a short, mildly plausible explanation and get on to the monster hunting! :-)
"how's that lemonhead, scully?
"mummuuurrmmmm"
@gina: @Annalee: Word. My ten year old heart was all a twitter for Scully and that kind of gooey never goes away.
They could always set the film in the middle of the series. No need to worry about late-series continuity, plenty of room for the Lone Gunmen and no 'splaining to do.
As long as there's a lazy hometown sheriff who doesn't believe there is a monster despite all the evidence to the contrary but continues to help the investigation because it's his job, I'm fine with it.
@Rick Chandler: Maybe bring back Luke Wilson's character from the vampire episode? That'd rock!
This photo made my heart go all pitty-pat.
There is no 9th season.
Actually, that'd be the way to go with this -- just ignore that entirely and we get William, TLG, no super-soldiers, none of that crap.
Maybe put up an explanatory screen at the beginning: "Ignore all that. Sorry."
Mulder and Scully. Whee!
@HootieMac:
Agreed.
I have nothing to add but that, yes, the ninth season never really existed. Seriously, does anyone believe that The Syndicate and a no-alien-lasers-on-the-Pentagon-9/11 could exist in the same universe?
Man, my girl-crush on Gillian Anderson is now renewed.
@Rick Chandler: And as long as Scully has something to autopsy :D
I stopped watching the show reqularly somewhere in the... can't remember which season. I typically enjoy epic, continuous, conspiratorial story lines, but life just got too hectic at the time to keep up. Always meant to go back and watch the whole show though.
Best thing about the show was the character interaction, writing and messed up stories (a good thing in this case).
Hope this is good.
I'm suprised that no one else here was put off when the show started introducing heavy religious christian material after the first conspiracy was solved.
The conspiracy stuff was the POINT of the X-files. I hated the One-0ffs. That Monster of the Week stuff was the worst. The Conspiracy mythos gave the show it's powerful sustained creepiness that kept it going. The best side-story was Jose Chung's From Outer Space.
@ Spudzill: Hell yeah. All of it.
@ hootie mac: Bad Blood rocks.
@ David Duchovny: Hey there good lookin.
i'm so friggen excited about this movie. i've been waiting for years. watching the series over and over can only tide me over for so long.
