Tomboy Kate morphs into wimpy womanhood in one of Lost's most annoying moments. Yesterday we paid tribute to our favorite moments from the show, but now it's time to tear into the most disappointing, annoying and/or simply wrong moments. Bad omen: the worst of Lost is almost all related to season 3.
The Wussification of Kate. Kate starts out as a tough girl on the lam from the law. She's ready to run into the jungle, face down boars, and crawl into hatches at the drop of a hat. Dressed in jeans and tee, she's prepared for anything. But when she is captured by the Others, she's forced to wear that filmy dress. Ben wants Kate to "look like a lady." Is this because Ben's messing with her mind, or because the writers want to tailor Kate into a more "feminine" character? In other words, is the the above clip about Ben finding a way to shame Kate or the show titillating viewers who want to see Evangeline Lilly in a skimpy frock? It's probably a little of both, but I fear it's weighted towards the latter. In any event, the moment when Kate stares at her new self in the mirror is way too "Very Personally Yours" for this writer's comfort, especially when Zeke whistles at her, then adds an ominous, "He's waiting." (For men, or women too young to have encountered VPY, it was a menstrual education pamphlet that told schoolgirls about the wonders of womanhood and Kotex pads.) The fact that the scene gives me the heebie-jeebies speaks to its effectiveness, yet it leads right into another criticism of the show.
Women=breeders. "He's waiting." There's something ominously sexual about that statement. Ben and his band of followers are obsessed with reproduction, given that the island seems to have rendered its inhabitants infertile. In order to follow that storyline, the female characters are either new mothers (Claire), pregnant (Sun), possibly pregnant (Kate, after a little caged delight with Sawyer), or working on getting women pregnant (Juliet). Um, hello? Some of us believe that biology is NOT destiny and would like some strong female characters who aren't defined by their breeding status. Or at least let us have the old Kate back. She may be wearing pants again, but she's gone all wimpy, locked as she is in the Jack/Kate/Sawyer soap opera triangle (or quadrangle, now that Jack and Juliet seem to be an item).
In fact, I'd prefer less soap opera and more smoke monsters across the board.
My nomination for worst episode: "Stranger In A Strange Land." I know that everybody loves to hate on season 3's "Exposé" ("Razzle dazzle!"). But while Lost's proclivity for introducing characters just to kill them off can be annoying, wasn't it satisfying to see Paulo and Nikki buried alive? When I first saw "Stranger in a Strange Land," I thought that my beloved Lost had jumped the shark. After all, the major point of the episode seems to be watching the fugtastic Bai Ling almost fall out of her clothing. Add whiny, annoying Jack to the mix, and I came very close to reaching for the remote. (There may be a gender divide here; when this episode came on during my friend's season 3 marathon party, three women suggested fast forwarding, while the male host frantically shushed us.)
My nomination for most annoying character: Juliet. Yesterday, somebody commented that he and his wife did a little jig when Charlie died. I disagreed with that, but if Juliet bit the big one, I'd do the same. She's a smarmy, smug uber-mom who calmly tells you what's best for you even though you're old enough to take care of yourself. She gets on my very last nerve every time she's on the screen, though I did enjoy seeing her husband get run over by a bus. Now, if only she did. Honorable mention: Jack.
A week from today, I'll be reviewing the season 4 opener. In the meantime, tell me about your hatiest Lost moments.

Seeing Nikki and Paolo getting buried alive was the best part of that episode, but everything surrounding it was stupid. It was like CSI: Lost. I think it would have been better to see them getting buried alive, but dig their way out an episode later. Ok. It may have been stupid, but kind of mind-bendingly awesome too.
Like, OMG, how'd they come back?
Yeah, Juliet's perma-smirk sets the annoyo-meter to 11 every time.
As a male viewer, I banish it with repeated viewings of "Gia." Occasionally in slow-motion.
I dislike Expose for what it is, but it's the last terrible episode. Everything after that is purpose-driven and awesome. I would also agree that Lost needs to be a little less sexist, but I think the baby-bearing has something to do with the mythology. Something along the lines of them waiting for a messiah to be born.
I couldnt agree more about the worst episode. I actually don't think that, on it's own, Expose is the worst. In fact, it could stand alone as a Twilight Zone episode. But goddamn, i hate Jack's tears (Jears) and so SiaSL is easily the worst. Why did the boys want to keep watching it? It could not be because of Bai Ling?
You feel about Juliet the same way i feel about Claire. While Juliet has grown on me, Claire has gone downhill. She shouldnt have cut her own bangs on the island. Plus, watching the extras on the DVD set: Elizabeth Mitchell is hysterical.
I could do without any of the romance LOST. get rid of it all.
LOI Just for Chongo since he/she opened up an interesting dialog, I won't say all of it sucks.
I've seen Juliet on a few reruns of ER lately, and even though she's playing a hot lesbian, I still can't stop myself from saying, "Shut UP Juliet!" every time she's onscreen.
I remember thinking "Expose" was really cool. Yeah, they're cannibalizing themselves, but I thought it was a really fun way to go about it.
I hate Juliet, too. Though I was glad to see Jack at least got honorable mention for most annoying character. The worst part of the show so far for me has been Charlie's death. :/
OK, ill try posting again (it ate my last one).
@Lynn: i totally agree about SiaSL being the worst episode. As a standalone episode, I think Expose is not bad, especially if you think of it in the same vein as a Twilight Zone episode. Nut SiaSL = a profusion of Jack Tears (Jears) + Bai Ling.
On Juliet: I actually have grown to like her, whereas I have grown to dislike Claire more and more. could be because she cut her own bangs on the island.
I'd LOVE less relationship stuff and more Island mythology stuff. Totally can do without the love triangle crap.
Women being "breeders" has a lot more to do with the world than you think.
Why do you think women have almost always taken a subservient role in societies? We all know they're not inherently weaker than Males, so what's going on? I'll tell ya what's going on. Men grab all the good jobs when women are stuck in child birth and rearing. And people stick with the jobs they've been given.
Breeding is a major factor in the female identity.
Sukiest moment... Hmm. I've gotta say it got pretty Groanworthy at places. Well I wasn't too happy when Echo got killed by a hallucination. I thought they were really hallucinations. That was a pretty cool part of the island. But it turns out it's not a part of the island. It's a part of the smoke monster. And Echo only got written out cause his actor wanted out... But I guess there's gotta be some wiggle-room in this great master script.
See, I always thought only women hated Juliet. I have male friends who think she's the hottest part of the show, but my female friends and I are of the opinion that her bitter, puckered-in little face is waiting for a sucker-punch. I really hope they kill her off. However, she did play a crackwhore nun with a copper IUD in an episode of HOUSE, so I just think of that whenever she's on the screen.
And oddly enough, I sorta liked the Paulo/Nikki episode. I'm one of the assholes who has always wondered who the other survivors were, so it was fun to take an episode and see the show through their eyes. And then bury those eyes.
I hate Juliet, and I am a guy. But you know who I really hate? Jack. If I'm ever stuck on an island and some dip-shit like that thinks he's taking charge I am injuring him and leaving him in the jungle. I'd rather let someone like Sawyer lead by example, at least he has a survival instinct.
let me join the chorus -- I haaaaate Juliet. She has this smug 'eye roll' she whips out in conversation with others, which makes me want to gouge out both eyes before she can ever do it again.
Huh, I am female and Juliet is my absolute favourite character. Well maybe second to Desmond. Kate however, I loathe with the fire of a million burning suns.
I remeber early on I thought Jack was going to be such an interesting character.
I already mentioned that I hated it when Charlie didn't die from Eathan's hanging, because I really thought they were not pulling punches. I didn't mind the character at the time (he began to irk though), but it lowered my expectations of the show.
Also, anything involving tailies, Michael's one note character, and "Waaaaaaaaaaaaalt!" In any form.
Hell, I would rather have Trumpy then Walt.
Can I just vote for every second Ana Lucia was on screen as craptacular?
@Seth L:
I was thinking about that episode with Carlie since it was brought up before and initially agreed. But in retrospect, it seems more like the first sign that the others may not be all that bad.
Oh boy, there is alot of greatness and a lot of SUCKAGE in Lost. Consistency is not this show's middle name. But the bright spots shine soo bright.
Here goes bad:
> Jack cries like a bitch
> anything sappy
> agreed - Kate in a dress < Kate in jeans or less
> whenever the Others come off like Dukes of Hazzard bad guys - I liked it better when they were all mysterious and deadly
> Echo getting killed - I miss the Jesus Stick
> Michelle Rodriguez getting killed - I miss the sweaty tanktops
When Lost is bad, it's HORRIBLE. Asking me to pick out my least favorite moments is a seriously daunting task! I thought the climax of the second season was completely nonsensical (Michael killing Ana Lucia and Libby - as if he had no other alternative; the "women who have sex will die" moments with Shannon and Ana Lucia; Jack being constantly obnoxious and saying he had a "plan", which was basically just getting captured by the Others). I'm surprised no one has mentioned Charlie's miracle resuscitation at the hands of Jack in Season 1! I could go on and on, but I try not to think about these things too much or else I just get angry at how inept Lost can be. I absolutely loved the first season, but started growing bitter in Season 2, and Season 3 just clinched it for me. The stretch of 6 episodes when Jack/Kate/Sawyer were captured was the most boring thing ever. Admittedly, the last stretch of episodes of Season 3 were fun again, but I've already learned to keep my expectations low (and get used to one dimensional characters) when it comes to Lost.
@The illest wind:
Um, yeah, it's true. Women are weaker than men. Check out Olympic sports, all female competitors in sports have lower standards than male competitors. Check out weight lifting. Pole vaulting. Marathon. 100m dash. Swimming. Even in agility sports like diving, men have the best moves.
I'm not saying women are inferior to men, we're all equals as far as human beings go, just that women are weaker physically. Yes, males of other species are more solitary, and that's why female lions are to be feared even more than males, because females often hunt in packs instead of solo, but then again humans have learned to adapt those tactics in the male population as well. So we got physically abler PLUS pack mentality. A winning combination.
I thought Exposé was an amazing episode.
In episode 7 or 8 of season 3, when Kate and Sawyer are sailing back to the big island, she says "We have to go back and get Jack". I nearly turned off the set at that moment, terrified at the thought that we would have to sit through further episodes set on that dismal second island. Warning...Bzzz...Warning...Bzzz...
I think the only reason Michael/Walt haven't been mentioned here is because the viewers (mercifully) forgot about them. I think I will start hysterically crying if I have to hear "Waaaaalt!" one more time.
@jesusdesaad: I dare you to post your comment on Jezebel...
As for Lost, pretty much any scene in the Human Zoo is pretty bad...Also, when Jack and Locke face off on how weird the island is...It's like in the X-Files when Scully would still be skeptical, no matter how unbelieveable their previous case was
i thought expose' was hilarious, and welcome comic relief. the commentary track on the dvd is great. damon and carlton, if you're reading this (of course you are!), please please less jack this season and more of ben's backstory.
I thought that the stupidest part by far was Ben shaking the cage and "killing" the bunny only to later find out he gave it a sedative. I cannot believe how lame that was. That said, the final episodes in Season 3 have been amazing and I for one can't wait to see Season 4.
Wow, I wasn't aware until I read this article that I was required to hate a character. I've never really formed negative opinions of any of the characters on the show, because I like the show. Usually the characters I hate reside on shows that I don't watch...I kinda thought that was the point.
It really does amaze me that people claim to like the show, and then just constantly talk shit and complain. If you hate something or find it stupid, why do you take the time to watch to watch the show, and then come on the internet and complain?
Seriously, every point in this article is retarded. The show is about change, expanding and adapting yourself to eventually reach enlightenment. All characters have been going through significant personality changes, so what makes Kate any different? I think you are a bit misguided if you think the change in her character was purely based on sex appeal and male viewership.
I think the author needs to keep her writing and her own insecurities separated. This article is biased, and each point the author makes is just her hating on the women on the show. I'm very sorry if you feel threated by attractive women, but it's not the writer's fault at all.
