When an intrepid visitor smuggled some shots of the concept artwork for Bionic Commando out of the bowels of one of Capcom's development pods, little did he know he'd be providing a glimpse of the future of civil service. One of the coolest pieces he smuggled out is this sketch showing two different sets of mecha-armor suits: one full of .50 caliber ammunition replenishment, and the other sporting a red cross and a massive needle. Although if you were lying prone on the battlefield in need of a kickstart, would you want someone trying to find a vein with that thing?
We love the idea of multipupose bot-like armor suits, and these perfectly juxtapose the images of life and death in war. You might have some massive bionic titans slugging it out and destroying the landscape, but these little suckers will be scurrying around everywhere, filling up guns and patching up wounds. In fact, why don't they put them to work in every facet of life? You could have a little mailman suit of armor, policemen, firemen, pizza delivery, and even Jehovah's Witnesses with backtanks full of copies of Watchtower.

Is that a walking toaster?? 'Cause if it is, DO WANT!
Yeah, we all would like to welcome our robot masters.
@JerrD74: Yeah, but the bread pops out the side, which might get some dirt on it unless you adhere to the three-second rule. Plus maybe the needle can inject butter. You know what, you're right. DO WANT!
Somebody please make a t-shirt out of these.
I like 'em .
I like 'em a lot.
it'll be like BioShock with robots...and more fun to break them open for their sweet, sweet adam. i mean ammo.
So the future will have powered armor suits, but they'll be lugging around ammo that was state of the art in 1910?
I figured they would at least have made it up to .51 caliber by then.
If you like those, go find any artwork by Kow Yokoyama. Since that's a pretty clear influence on the design.
Here's a good place to start:

"So, the future will have powered armor suits, but they'll be lugging around ammo that was state of the art in 1910?"
Yes. By then, it will be 'retro chic'.

That is soooo hot, totally looks like those thingies in the Ghost in the Shell series. Awesome!!
@valhum:
Oh yeah! Tachikomas and Fuchikomas need love too!
It's certainly better than having teenagers with wheel barrows running around trying to refill your ammunition like they did in Matrix Revolutions.
Either you guys are young, or you just aren't that big of nerds.
These are total rips of Huey Dewey and Louie from Silent Running (1972)
@Plague:
No, R2-D2 was a total rip of the Silent Running 'Bots.
The one above is humanoid.
As for Silent Runnings itself? I defer to James Lileks:

"peaty slab of crap"
It kind of looks like the armor suits worn by the military in the Animatrix. That scene where the robots rip on open and pull the dudes torso out of it comes to mind...
Maybe it's just thhe angle, but those things look massively imbalanced. Especially the ammo one which should be carrying around a couple hundred pounds of ammo.
If I was wearing one of those suits it sure looks like I'd have to be walking around bent over like one of those guys carrying huge bundles of wood in old pictures. It's a recipe for bad back cramps at the least.
@7Zark7 Iz In Ur Internetz: If it ain't broke, don't fix it; besides, the caliber may be .50BMG, but who's to say what the bullets will actually DO?
@Biggrz: My first thought, exactly!
@Seth L:
Sure R2 was as well. I still stand by my comment.
And thanks for that Lileks link. I know now never to read him again.
Could they make on thats a Bartender
It kind of reminds me of the Ice Armor Thingy from GI Joe. I looked around for it on google, but could not find the name. Anyone know what I am thinking of?
@Plague:
Seriously? I thought Silent Runnings was maudlin hippie-dreck too.
@Kissyfur66:
That would be spiffy!
@zenpoet: This ?
Tachikomas ftw.
@Seth L:
Yes, seriously. I hate hippie dreck as much as anyone, but I heart Bruce Dern and cute anthropomorphic robots.
This movie and 2001 really got me started on SF.
But my main point is that the "drones" from SR were the start of where all these types came from.
I (heart) Tachikomas so very very much.
is anyone else reminded of the mechs in animatrix? there was a scene where it was people vs robots. the people were in mechs and the robots were...robots. the mechs actually wound up getting torn open like a tin can and the people were gruesomely pulled out...but the mechs themselves were pretty sweet
i'd like to see an artist sit down with some tech guys and try and figure out what actual power armor might look like. truth be told i actually dont think these ones are too far off. from what i've seen they'll probably be roughly the dimensions of what warhammer or unreal tournament armor is.
if only they had an answer to their power supply issue...
I would like one with a beer attachment. Or whiskey. Or maybe both, like the medical robot's blue and yellow fluids.
Lego goes to war?
Huey, Dewey, and Louie.
Cool movie.
"...Take care of the forest"
i dunno: them turtle shells look like pretty big targets to me. not really very battle-field ready. the balance issue makes them less mobile, and all of the "money" is sticking out on the back there. all you'd have to do is hit 'em in the back-- not even take them out. medical robots should be low to the ground (wounded are most likely prone), small, not have a big red bulls-eye/crosshairs painted on their valuable cargo, etc.
they're adorable! They do remind me a little of Tachikomas. :D
That being said, I think I'd freak if the pizza guy showed up in one of these. Either that or it'd be a sad signal of how rough my neighborhood is.
@92BuickLeSabre: Yes! That is exactly what I was thinking of.
