With the news that Lego are to release special sets based on the new Speed Racer movie, two thoughts enter the collective io9 head. The first, that we can't wait for said sets to be released so that we can mix and match them with our Indiana Jones and Star Wars sets for an awesome Racer X/Darth Maul/Nazis showdown, needs no explanation whatsoever. But the second is this: What's the next big Lego movie or TV tie-in? We explore three possibilities after the jump.
Lego Iron Man: No, not this one (although, really? Awesome), but where is the ideal tie-in for this summer's metal movie blockbuster? Just as Tony Stark used whatever he found around him to build his iron suit of doom and justice, so should millions of children the world around them use multi-colored bricks to become their own Armored Avengers.
Lego Battlestar Galactica: I know; isn't Battlestar Galactica a little too dark, a little old, for Lego? Perhaps - but who wouldn't want the chance to build their own replicas of the bridge (complete with little Lego Gaeta), Colonial One or Pegasus Brig? And just imagine how hot Lego Six would be in her blocky little red dress.
Lego Lost: Admittedly, once you get past the Others' houses and the Hatch, there's not going to be that many sets available for this line. Lego Sandy Beach? Lego Three Toed Statue That Gets Shown Once And Never Mentioned Again? You could try and create a Lego Flight 815 Crash Site set, of course, but anyone could make that just by emptying the box on the ground and leaving it in a big pile.
The possibilities are endless - If you're not at least considering a series based on There Will Be Blood, why, you're just leaving money on the table, Mr. Lego - but what multi-media franchises are you hoping to see immortalized in plastic brick in the near future?

Yeah, Iron Man would be pretty cool. However if you want to expand beyond just film franchises, I would love to see a full Marvel Lego line.
I think i would like to see something post-apocalyptic and perhaps grunge-tech like Mad Max -- having regular-ish vehicles that have been 'accessorized' with spikes and flaming maces and heads-with-pikes...
I was also thinking of adding a bit of zombie into the mix but I am feeling a bit swamped with current excess supplies of this genre...
Wouldn't a Lego Six, uh, hurt?
Oh you mean, not life size, er, okay then. Carry on.
A lego set based on "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". I can already imagine the Vogon Poetry Chamber. And the little plastic towels would be great.
I saw LEGO fruit snacks yesterday. In my day LEGO wouldn't sell out like that!
Blacktron forever!
I want Star Trek LEGOs. Sure it's trite, but I must obey the inscruitable exhortations of my soul.
Just so long as it begets a Lego game for the Wii I do not care, I just want it.
Just FYI: The statue had four toes.
/nitpick
Lego Army of Darkness? It'd be just like the medieval Lego sets, only with Ash/Evil Ash and the car added. And you know the windmill would make a great set.
@frnksmth: Right on! Lego Star Wars on the Wii has owned a piece of my soul for last few weeks. The Indiana Jones Lego game comes out this summer and a Lego Batman game this fall. A lego Star Trek game would also be awesome.
Sadly there are no Nazi's in the Lego Indiana Jones, so making a "kinder, gentler" BSG would totally work. Lego is the ultimate RETCON.
My son is a Lego freak, to the point that he wants to start making custom figures, since there isn't a Halo set.
At least with the Speed Racer set he will finally start to like one of "Daddy's cartoons."
@btgoss: There ARE Kubrik Spartans...
Thunderbirds.
But the one with the strings, not the 'reimagined' one where Lady Penelope drives a freakin' Ford.
@Seth L: I'm afraid that would be too much awesome for this world to handle.
Imagine a minifig scaled Enterprise akslhfakl jhklfjhbkj
I want BSG Legos. I want them all. I want a Lego Viper Mark VII and an old school Viper, and a Raptor, and a Galactica and Pegasus and Colonial One, and a Base Star and a Ressurection Ship. I totally want a Cloud 9 that I can pop the bubble off of and make the park and stuff in. I'm not even a Lego fan, but I would so buy and build these. And then I would crash them into each other while making crashing and explosion noises with my mouth. Optional figures of prominent characters would rock. I would carry Mr. Gaeta every where just so I could say "Tell me about the Draedus Mr. Gaeta!" and I could pull him out of my pocket so people wouldn't think I'm nuts. I am clearly nuts, but they don't need to know that.
@TheyCallMeLibrarianHot: right on!!
Lego Cloverfield, because half of the fun of building intricate Lego structures is in the subsequent smashing them to bits.
Lego Cloverfield, complete with Lego Hud.
@MumblingMynah: That'll teach me to check things using Google. Sorry.
@tk.: Nice double-team!!!
If they can make Silence of the Lambs Minimates, they can pretty much make Lego anythings.
I'm in total agreement on Lego BSG. But the object of my lust is the Viper docking bay, or whatever the hell they called it. I want Chief Tyrol and tools! And Starbuck and Apollo can slug each other over affairs of the heart. *glee*
@AMISHJOHN - I know, that is what gave him the idea for "real" Lego Halo minifigs. He saw them at the video game store. But they, like the MegaBlok figures are not in fact "real" Legos. So thank you for the suggestion, and I wish it was that easy.
There is, of course, a whole cottage industry dedicated to custom built lego blocks; Sci-Fi characters, comic characters, modern and WWII military, etc...
@btgoss: True, but I don't see LEGO putting out a Pulp Fiction set, do you?
A Space 1999 Eagle has been a long time Lego fantasy.
I've just never had enough of the right pieces and the Lego PC stuff doesn't do it for me.
My wife's vote is for a "Far Out Space Nuts" set with a little Honk Minifig.
That's why we're married for so long: Our various retardations complement one another.
Lego Babylon 5!
Lego Doctor Who. Seriously. Tiny wee Lego Daleks and Cybermen would be pretty much the cutest thing ever... and of course they have 40 years of the series to mine... Lego Zarbi perhaps?
Lego 2001! Oh, that would just be a black brick... Although a Lego piece that said "what are you doing, Dave?" would be neat.
And Buck Rogers, of course, chrome Lego bricks... Yes!
I believe the main reason a Lego Avenger such as IronMan will not be seen is that Mega Blocks currently has the rights to marvel block building toys.
P.S. Captain Jack Lego man for the next millennium is my vote for next Lego tie in.
HA! The minimates are great! "Hey kids, let's play Silence of The Lambs! I'll be Hannibal Lecter-'I'm gonna eat your liver'"....HA!
