Venom, the alien creature that latched on to Peter Parker in Spider-Man 3, will get his own solo movie. No word yet whether Topher Grace will be back as Eddie Brock, the guy who replaced Peter as the monster's host. Not to mention whether there'll be more alien-induced dancing and piano playing. But Marvel, which made its own deal with striking writers, has already had meetings with A-list writers about a Venom movie.
But chances are Topher won't actually don the slimy rubber-fetish outfit again. He said last April that he wouldn't be on board for a Venom movie because spin-offs starring Elektra and Supergirl have bombed. He thinks a Venom vehicle would do similarly badly. [IESB]

I think that, by definition, any writer that is going to work on a Venom movie deserves to be removed from the "A" list.
@braak: I think Topher has the right idea -- this is not good.
@NefariousNewt: Yeah I love marvel but this is gonna turn it to a crappy movie......If it had Carnage in it it may be a different story though.....haha....Hopefully it wont be as bad as the Hulk movie that was lame....
The real problem here is how poorly Spider-man 3 handled the character and he's origin story. It's not really the best film to spin-off from.
Venom: Lethal Protector, the movie. Hilarious...
@super_bryant: They should have just made the entire carnage saga.
@super_bryant: Oh yes.... Where Venom would bomb in theaters, the addition of a hyped-up, super-murdering, more pudding-y version of Venom would actually do well....
yeeesh.
Actually, I think the only way a Venom movie would do well is if they made the WHOLE movie about the parasite's trying to make it as a lounge singer and piano player in the cut-throat world of Las Vegas entertainment. He jumps from host to host trying to make it while his girlfriends keep leaving him. Eventually he takes a job teaching piano to a class of sweet, troubled youth and they both find from each other what they need.... love and acceptance...
Starring Will Smith as Venom.
And Dakota Fanning as "adeline", the child from a broken home who teaches Venom the true meaning of music.
you'd think they'd at least wait and see how the hulk movie plays out before trying to reboot another character.
@Pope John Peeps II: I'd shell out ten bucks for that.
Oh come one, Elektra was pretty decent. Far better than Daredevil. Which granted, isn't saying much. But yeah, venom is only great because of the tussles with spiderman.
@theintrepidspacemanspiff: Well, not really. Considering how stupid people who make movies ARE this seems perfectly reasonable.
I mean, why are they pouring money into a new Hulk movie when the whiff of decomposing egg stink rotting fart gas from the first movie still lingers in the air.
@Pope John Peeps II: OMG that sounds like the greatest movie ever!! Venom Las Vegas!
@charliejane: Also Guest-starring Pete Wentz as "Jakeboy", the blind bluesman capoeira Vampire who invented the blues over 200 years ago, and who teaches Venom the true meaning of angst, and the proper way to apply eyeliner and emo hair.
@aspiringexpatriate: Elektra stank like a 2 week old corpse. But Daredevil stank like 3 2 week old corpses.
Which is better? Oh how can you compare two such vile stinks. It's like comparing "Underworld" and "Underworld 2"
@Pope John Peeps II:
you forget the best part of elektra,
DANCING SPINNING DEMON MAN! WOOO!
(anyone have that .gif lying around?)
I thought Venom was pretty much dead at the end of Spiderman 3.
Wouldn't that be like spinning off a Silver surfer movie from the 2nd Fantastic Four movie?
...wait.
@Pope John Peeps II: Hahahah!
Also, Jessica Biehl should be in it as a stripper who is trying to make a career for herself as a singer/songwriter.
@Pope John Peeps II: I don't know... I have the occasional happy memory of the big angry Gumby and his Hollywood-mug-shot pop.
Has there been a single more embarrassing scene in the history of filmed entertainment than the jive-walkin finger-snappin Peter Parker amped up on alien cool juice part of Spidey 3?
@lukeoneil47: No, I don't think so. I closed my eyes in embarrassment that I had actually paid to see that. And then I got angry about it.
There was no such thing as a "Spiderman 3".
(If they have to replace the character of Eddie Brock, then they could make a new Spider Man 3 too. Without the stupid "Good Goblin" and can make Spiderman 4 with the Sandman!)
I realized a long time ago to NEVER expect much from comic-book movies. And with the exception of Batman Begins I have yet to be wrong.
"Spider Man 3" was an utterly batshit joy. I saw it twice in theaters. But then, I kind of love accidental surrealism (Which S3 traded almost exclusiveley in.). As for the Venom movie, I love the character and think that they could be getting a great script (due to their loophole in the strike)but I also know how badly they fucked up Daredevil, Elekra etc. I think "Iron Man" will be a good bellweather as far as being able to distinguish whether or not they know what the fuck they're doing.
ITS FREAKING VENOM!! Topher Grace your freaking retarded if you don't do this. It will defiantly shed the little weak 70's boy image, that and you hitting the gym...
@RoninianHoon: It will also defiantly shed his career. A Venom movie will stink a tremendous stank.
@super_bryant: duh on the "Carnage" part...
@Pope John Peeps II: I'd pay to see a Venom&Carnage movie done the dark way of the new Batman...
@RoninianHoon: You must seriously be 14 years old. That movie would suck harder than a living black hole in a bad mood. Just the concept makes me cringe.
Ha, smart, Topher Grace. They can't make you dance if you don't wanna!
As much as I revel in seeing Spidey and co in the flesh, I really don't want them to make another emo free-for-all like the third movie.
For the sequal... Venom 2 Electric Boogaloo!! Feel it!
I'm in full support of this. It cannot be worse than anything that Sam Raimi did to Venom. And Topher Grace should be far away from it. He was an extremely weak Eddie Brock. I don't know how this will work, but a man can hope.
How about a Venom movie with a venom that looks like he's pure muscle and has a fucking 13 inch long tongue while dripping green acid/venom.... You know, even somewhat true to 100 different comic interpretations of Venom..
Hopefully, this is more of a "Scorpion King" and less of a "Catwoman".
@Sharpless: There's a rumour that it was actually the studio that made him jam four separate movies together.
I cling to that, because in my heart of hearts I would really like to believe that he has more sense than Joel Shuemaker. Three leading villains? No. Just...no. You can actually watch the movie and see where they ran low on time and writing budget.
@Jonn: Ya those guys deserved their own movies respectively. Instead we got lil MTV versions of what could have been 3 very great flicks. I would have really liked to see a deeper conflict and resolution on the Sandman storyline myself :/
You know, as a bunch of sci fi geeks, or nerds, or what have you, I'm sure you can appreciate the feeling of frustration when people who have no idea what they're talking about misuse a specific genre term. Mistaking Star trek for Star Wars or whatever...
That said, THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING "EMO" ABOUT PETER PARKER BECOMING AGGRESSIVE AND OUTWARDLY HOSTILE AND DANCING AROUND IN A JAZZ CLUB AND PLAYING PIANO AND WINKING AT GIRLS ONTHE STREET!!!
The fact that he had eyeliner on and brushed his hair forward? That is not emo. I've seen this version of PP referred to as "Emo Spidey" far too many times.
yes, I take my Texas is the Reason, and Sunny Day Real Estate and Promise Ring et al very seriously.
@Jonn: Sam Raimi has said that he's not a fan of Venom. I'm not complaining that he crammed too much into the movie (he did) but that Raimi didn't respect the character enough to give him the attention he deserved.
@Pope John Peeps II: I suppose your right I just a kid who grew up playing Maximum Carnage on SNES.....remember it was the only game with a red plastic housing...
