Sunspot 982 flared up over the weekend, and it looks totally awesome. Not only is it humongous, but it has these two cool-looking dark filaments sticking out of it. Photographer Greg Piepol took this picture using a regular Coronado SolarMax 90 Ha telescope. Another awesome sunspot pic after the jump.
This one comes from photographer John Nassr in Baguio, Philippines.

does this mean sweet northern lights in the near future? i know flares affect them, but i don't know when/how.
Closeups of the Sun with flames licking up into the darkness of space are always welcome in my eyes.
Amazing shots. This made me curious to find out how this is done with a camera.
The Sun is crazy.
The fact that the most "common" celestial figure is so crazy is even more crazy.
Awesome.
So, do the filaments mean the Sun has Morgellon's?
Just doing my part to squig people out.

Sigh. I miss solar maximum.
You know, back when there were real big spots such as this?
