Grohl: I Hate Wolverine More Than I Hate Courtney Love

wolverine2.jpg Dave Grohl isn't just the leader of bubblegum grunge group Foo Fighters; he's also the latest enemy of the Uncanny X-Men. When a trailer for the upcoming Wolverine and the X-Men cartoon appeared online earlier this week, fans noted the use of music by Sevendust and Foo Fighters as happy proof that something, finally, had replaced the embarrassing hair metal of the '90s cartoon series. Little did they know that that replacement wasn't going to last too long.

Well, the problem with using something like "Best of You" by Foo Fighters for your trailer is that you generally have to pay for its use. Otherwise, you may have to pull the trailer from your official promotional site for the series when the band notices, and YouTube pages where the trailer was will disappear one by one, replaced by messages reading "This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by The Foo Fighters."

Does this mean that Grohl would rather get paid for his work than allow the kids to see their favorite superheroic mutants fight crime, or are his motives much more altruistic? Considering the trailer shows Professor Xavier get blown up as a cheap motivation for his former students to become depressed and out for revenge, perhaps he's simply saving the audience from another lame attempt at grim and gritty superheroes, straight from the late 1980s.

People need to lay off Wolverine for a while. I mean, I like Wolverine, and all that. But there are other X-Men.

  • I didn't think that Emma Snow would get to wear that...

  • "Does this mean that Grohl would rather get paid for his work than allow the kids to see their favorite superheroic mutants fight crime".

That's a little silly--asking for payment for his work doesn't mean he's the one harming the poor, poor kiddies; it means Marvel screwed up and will have to replace the music with something they acquired legally.

  • I think the real issue here is using "Best of You" as the background music for Wolvie flipping out and killing people. Is he *angsty* about the killing? Was Charlie *his* and those mean men took him away before his time? Hell, at least a latent slash pairing would provide *something* new to this most tired of Marvel retreads. Note to X-Men writers (of all genres): Please get new material. Thanks.

  • Aren't they killing off Xavier (again) in the funny books now, too?
If there's one thing you never want to do, it's follow the artistic choices of Brett Ratner...

  • That actually looks really good. It feels dark, exciting and well animated. Even despite the fact that it starts off with the murder of Professor X (which has bee done to death... heh), it seems like a really cool iteration of the X-Men.

  • @BRAAK
I'm with you on that. It's gotten to the point I never wanna say wolverine my favorite xmen, because everyone else(even non-comic-geeks) says the same. Im still waiting to see gambit on the big screen.

  • Well the only problem I've ever had is the Wolverine this and Wolverine that over the last 15yrs of the series.

I grew up reading The X-Men when Wolverine, Storm, Banshee and Thunderbird and Colossus were all added to the team, and I can Tell you they were all of interest, all good characters and everyone on the team was spotlighted like any good ensemble would be.

Its really cheapens the franchise to call a series Wolverine and The X-Men... thats basically saying the Wolverine really isn't a member of the X-Men... hes just hanging out with them.

For my money Scott has always been the most complex member of the team, and his love life problems have certainly been worse than anything Wolverine has ever faced.

  • Since when is is okay to not get paid for the music you wrote and played? It's not like Marvel doesn't have the cash to pay him for it-and if Marvel used it in a movie they would have to pay to use it.

@IHateWhatYouHaveOn: Yeah, and also: you want to talk about people who are rabidly insanely defensive of their copyrighted material?

    Hello, Marvel.

  • Oh and another thing... Why do they keep drawing Wolvie too tall... hes only about 5'4 or so tall...

  • @braak: What?!? Since when? That's not what movies and video games have taught me, and they never lie!!!

  • You know, I liked Wolverine as a kid. He wasn't my favorite (that'd be the Silver Surfer) but I liked him. Then I realized that Marvel just whored him out to any project they wanted to suceed. Got a new project? Make sure there's a Wolverine cameo and you can stick him on the cover, cause Wolverine = bank.

Kinda like DC and Batman, come to think of it...

  • I always thought Wolverine was an overrated character myself. And now, from what I hear, Loeb has ruined him. Ah well.

  • @dOk: To preface what I'm going to say, I must share that I find Wolverine to be one of the least interesting characters presented by Marvel comics. However, to say that Scott's love life problems are worse than Logan's is ignoring a lot of Wolverine's history. Sure, Scott lost his love, married her clone, had a child that got infected with a virus and sent to the future, lost his wife, regained his love, pressed the button that potentially killed his son and his son's clone, saw his son again, lost his wife, engaged in a telepathic affair, lost his wife again but had her basically put Scott and Emma together, lost his son again, found that his son was alive but possibly a traitor, and then lost his mentor. Well, that's more than his love life - that's his emotional life minus his brothers. But Logan has a long, complex history that he only recently - over the last few years - has come to remember. That has to be a terrible feeling, knowing that you've led this long life but don't have any idea where you've been and what you've done. He's lost loves. He's lost family. He's been a killing machine. He's survived a painful process to augment his skeleton with adamantium. He had adamantium yank out through his pores. He's had to watch the woman he loves be with a man that he simply cannot be. He's seen her die. He's seen the man she chose over him simply move on - TWICE! And he knows that should she ever come back, she'll still choose Scott over him. Wolverine is a very complex and interesting character if you really pay attention to him - but the spotlight they put on this character and the simplicity of his characterization from book to book (thanks to the fact that his character development is probably stalted by his healing factor, just like his age) makes him terribly boring for most of us.

  • Why oh why is wolverine so emo???? I mean damn, Scott was more basass then him in that trailer. And scotts a pussy....

  • @Szin: i think that happened long before Loeb was around, don't worry.

Personally, i think wolverine was *much* better before we *knew* anything about him: the Weapon X mini-series in MCP by BWS (yay acroynms!) i think was, as awesome as it was at the time, the beginning of the end.

or, maybe the retconning of the rest of the marvel universe *into* that timeframe was, it's hard to tell.

  • @Angryrider: Emma Frost. I really do think Xavier dies every couple of years. He just died AGAIN recently. He's about as bad The Phoenix.

  • Ok... i have to admit that (finally) they are filling in the gaps in Logan's memory. but i always hated with a capitol "H" the whole Jean/Logan crap Chris C started... that was the worst love triangle ever in the X-Men, and yea Scott will always be the better choice for whatever version of Jean reappears... (And we all know that Jean will be back... since she pretty much a part of the Phoenix or IS The Phoenix, so she can't really ever die now can she ;)) Because Scott was there from the beginning and Wolvie was just an add-on when Marvel decided to revamp the book and brought Wolverine out of Hulk limbo land.
Scott isn't a loser... losers don't save the world several times over.... lol

@Mecharine: You do have to wonder at what point the veteran X-Men are going to start waving their hands dismissively and going, "Pshaw" whenever a longtime teammate dies.

    "JEEEEEEEEAAAAAN!!!"

"Chill out, Scott. She'll be back in time for Valentine's Day."

  • @GospelX:

Sir, I like the cut of your jib.

Of course, I live in a bizarro fangirl world where both Jean and Emma are just awesome and Scott should probably just go away. So there's no accounting for my taste...

  • I can't even comment on this, as I am still upset at the poor casting decision Ratner made with Rogue. Everyone knows that a live action Rogue is basically a young Bonnie Raitt with double Ds and a bad accent. It's a travesty people, a travesty! And don't get me started on Gambit.

Also, why is Pyro a major character, wasn't he some godawful fur-and-lycra suited hair band looking guy with a terrible stereotyped Aussie accent?

  • Wolverine = suck.

    That is all.

  • Im just glad Kitty Pryde is back.

  • @moff: It's happened. In X-Factor, after Siren found out her father (Banshee) had died, she refused to grieve because she was certain he'd come back to life soon enough.
Of course, everyone else is pretty sure that's just the denial talking.

  • That is the funniest thing I have read all day! Thank you!!
    And I totally agree!@moff:

  • Ooh, I'm not much of a Wolverine fan either. Blame this on my childhood belief that being able to shoot friggin' laserbeams from your eyeballs is soooo much cooler than a shiny metal skeleton. Unfortunately I can no longer like either Wolverine or Cyclops because both whine, whine, whine!

  • Is this in continuity with X-Men Evolution, since they have similar designs and same company? Not that I really watched it, but that would be kinda sweet. I'm a continuity whore. Please don't judge me on my lifestyle.

  • @SVreader: @IHateWhatYouHaveOn: I think that's sarcasm you missed. ;)

    Also, Emma Frost. Wow.

  • Gambit, was hotter, less of a self serving, whiny-ass biatch, and was actually intriguing. If there was one thing that constantly pissed me off with Wolverine it was the Jean Gray(Grey?) issue. She's/was in love with someone else. You're a tough guy, get over it. Loved his character to bits, shame that Wolverine seemed to get all the glory with his supposed anti-hero character.

  • @twreckx: Re Gambit: Amen. It kinda sucked that his miniseries ended so quickly; his character's always had such potential. Still, I'm kinda glad we won't have to go through a live action Gambit with that awful cringe-worthy accent.

  • @twreckx: Is there some way you can explain the difference between Gambit and Wolverine? Both were violent men with shady, criminal pasts that served as dumb plot devices.

As far as I can tell, the only difference is claws vs/ explosions.

  • Wolverine is much better when he's not written for children.

  • May I point out the sloppy editing choices in using the "TV static" filter in addition to the default type in Final cut pro. I know you have budgets, but come on. The clips themselves get a big "meh" from me anyway, so perhaps it doesn't matter.

  • @Pope John Peeps II: could not agree with you more. "edgy dark hero" is way overplayed.

  • When will Gambit get his chance to show what a cool mutant badass character is supposed to be?

  • Wolverine sucks. He's grouchy and he slices people into Julienne fries. Big woop.

  • @jennstar: I, on the other hand, am a major Cyclops fan. I am much more a fan of Havok, but I think Cyclops doesn't get the fair recognition he deserves.

  • I Don't know, this looks pretty fun. the best wolverine stories are told out-of-costume.

one of these days, they'll hire Grant Morrison to do an X-Men cartoon.

    Nanosentinels, bitch!

  • I hear Glenn Danzig is still pissed about Hugh Jackman, :)

  • What's with all the cynicism? This actually looks like it might be good, like the '90s series which kinda rocked, by the way. It won't be Batman: The Animated Series but, then, what is?

  • Image of Jonn Jonn at 08:52 PM on 02/09/08 *

    1. Oh, they're using that Ult. Avengers soft-shading animation style. The one that sucks.
    2. Why does Wolvie get top billing? Oh, right, sales.
    3. Why does this look exactly like a bad AMV?

@Sharpless: Nothing. I suspect not even B:TAS at this point.
