Liverpool was okay with just being the birthplace of the Beatles for a long time. But this is no longer the case. Bored with their antiquated reputation that is dwindling in significance as Beatles fans age and die off, the city is commissioning a new lighthouse observatory that will give Liverpool an image boost. This design, proposed by Phos Architects, looks like the virtual world version of the Tower of Babel. I, personally, hope it never gets picked. If it does, though, it will be real by 2011. You hope it doesn't get picked? What are the other options?
Am I the only one who thinks it looks like a giant pack of cigarettes?
i think that its ugly as hell, but that white bit at the top would look cool by itself. it should just be a giant glowing white spire. like the inverse of saurons tower.
I tend to like symmetry. I guess building it to look like anything from the past would be considered uninspired. I wonder where the designer got their inspiration. Nature?
Now, I know it was quite sometime since I donned my nautical hat and fared on the seven seas, but, a lighthouse?
Don't we use GPS and lasers and radar to assist navigation?
oh lord, light houses are cool the way they are... there is something just magical about them and we should not change them.
@DrMathochist: It's an homage to the Ziggurats.
Ziggurats in England. How quait. I agree that spire lighthouses seem nearly perfect within a range. Maybe it's just part of my programming.
Liverpool is the European Capital of Culture 2008, which means they got given loads of money to develop the city. The lighthouse isn't very useful in a city with a world-class derelict harbour and shipyard!
