You keep seeing the same faces over and over again in science fiction. At first it's like, "Oh, there's my old friend Summer Glau. I'm so glad she's getting work." And then, it slowly turns into, "How many maniacs of science can Jeffrey Combs play before he actually falls asleep in mid-speech and lights his hair on fire with his bunsen burner?" Especially when people like Will Smith admit they're only doing scifi because it's commercial. Click through to vote for the most overexposed science fiction actor.
I resisted the temptation to include people like Katee Sackhoff, who's only done two shows: Battlestar Galactica and Bionic Woman. Or Scott Bakula. Or half the cast of Firefly, who've gone on to be on other things. I also decided to leave out Bruce Willis and Cilian Murphy, who have been in a lot of scifi but aren't really "scifi actors" in the way that Will Smith is. Who would you have included on this poll?
In any case, you needn't feel guilty about voting for a good actor in this poll. Everyone here is a good actor, but maybe one of these people should work in other genres for a while. (Which, to be fair, Smith did for a bit.)

And yet I will watch at least 5 minutes of Ultraviolent whenever I click past it on cable. My brain is very thankful I didn't opt for the Starz/Encore pack when I switched to FIOS. It could only handle so much abuse.
"Mammoth" isn't scifi.. it's bad comedy at most. I really wish Rogers would give me back the $3.00 I spent to rent it..
What if Milla is just restricted to non-speaking roles, like the first half of Fifth Element?
I take issue with this premise. What's wrong with actors doing a lot of genre work? What's wrong with actors doing a lot of NON-genre work? If they aren't any good at it, then sure, but if they are, then what's the problem?
@JennaW: I guess it's just seeing the same faces, playing much the same roles, over and over again. I personally would like Will Smith to take a longer vacay from scifi.
@JennaW: That's what I said to Charlie when she came up with this idea. I LIKE seeing Jeffrey Combs and Milla in scifi stuff all the time.
But at the same time, it would be nice to see new faces in scifi stuff too. So I say, swap Jeffrey Combs into The Shield once in a while (man he could chew scenery with the best of those guys), and take Sandra Oh out of the hideous Gray's Anatomy and put her in BSG.
How do Serenity and Firefly count as two? It's the same fucking role.
And how could you leave out Dina Meyer? Starship Troopers, Dragonheart, Johnny Mnemonic, Bats, Secret Agent Man, Birds of Prey, Star Trek: Nemeis, Point Plesant and Saw I-III.
@Annalee Newitz: I will never complain that Milla Jovovich is in too many sci-fi movies. For my liking, she's not in enough of them.
@Annalee Newitz:
@Charlie Jane Anders:
Blame my history of going to repertory theater festivals :) Hamlet in the afternoon; Oberon in the evening.
I believe that Jeffrey Combs can continue to work for as long as he can get work.
His best role, of course, was as "The Question".
@Macloserboy: As a Non-Benny New Jersian, I refuse to acknowledge Point Pleasant. But I have to agree w/you on that except for Starship Troopers. One of the best sex scenes in a movie in my view.
I adore Milla and will watch her in anything science fiction-related. I think it's awesome that she does SF flicks and doesn't try to spin it as great art or Oscar roles, but simply as fun...
Plus. . .she put on 80 pounds with her pregnancy and ate things like beef marrow. How bad ass is that?
I'd love to see her face-off against Jason Statham.
I would have to say 1st off that i never ever want to see Milla Jovovich take time off... lol
After that i agree with JennaW in saying whats wrong with seeing those familiar faces working... especially if what they are doing is enjoyable.
Please do the poll over and put Scott Bakula back in so I can vote for him 10 times!
I dont feel guilty voting because they aren't all good actors. I really can't see any of those actor straying to far from their type casts. I voted for summer glau.
there is no such thing as too much Milla.
@theOmegaMan: Oh yes there is... would you pay to see "Resident Evil 4"?
Oh, wait... I probably would pay to see RE4. You're right, there is no such thing as too much Milla. Unless you have to listen to her album.
@vurtscribe: Milla vs. Statham?
Brilliant idea, and my mind is reeling. Sounds like a match made in Pay-per-view or Paul W.S. Anderson heaven!
Yeah, I'll never get tired of Jeffrey Combs.
@DCI Gene Hunt: I am now totally fiending for Milla vs. Statham!!
As far as my lady is concerned all movies could be Mila running around beating people up.
@DCI Gene Hunt: I would pay for it. The last one kicked B movie ass.
Jeffrey Combs, like Bruce Campbell, is an icon.
They can do whatever they want.
And you will LIKE IT.
@Charlie Jane Anders:
@vurtscribe:
I agree Will can take a LONG vacation and I will not miss him. On the other hand Milla really needs to be put against Statham ala Violet versus a Statham vampire lord or Alice versus a new Umbrella baddie honcho that happens to be a T-virus hopped up Statham! We need it!! Bring it on!!
@NefariousNewt: Me too.. I can never get enough of her.
As much as I love Jeffrey Combs sci-fi work, I wouldn't necessarily like to see him break from sci-fi as much as I'd really like to see him in some other stuff. I wanna see Jeffrey Combs go crazy on some situation comedy or something. The WIN would be great.
Although I wouldn't vote for him, Adam Baldwin - Independence Day, Firefly/Serenity, Angel, Chuck, X-Files.
@NefariousNewt: @Garrison Dean:
I concur with the others re: Milla J. Don't think I've even seen her in anything other than The Fifth Element and Resident Evil films. OK, she's no thespian but she does have presence. And her athleticism more than compensates for the modest dramatic range. While she'd be good in a non-SF action role, I hope she'll stick to the genre that suits her best.
Milla rules. As long as she remains pleasing to the eye, she can make as many b flicks as possible
You can never have too much of Milla or Summer Glau.
Ultraviolet is one of the best action movies of all time. People poo-poo on the semblance of plot but that was never the point. It had the plot of a bad comic book. But it also had the crazy action of an awesome comic book. The maternal scenes between Violet and Six are underrated. She was as convincing of a mother as any in scifi, especially when she was threatening to kill him.
I don't know how people can malign Ultraviolet when on every level and in every minute it is ten times better than say, Elektra.
I must not be as big a sci-fi geek as I thought I was. The only "name" actor above that I actually know who you are talking about is Will Smith. And, really, I would put him in the same category as Bruce Willis. He has done as many non sci-fi movies as sci-fi in recent years.
However, I will agree that he is over-exposed and should take a break from all movies for while. Please no Bad Boys III, or Hitch II or anything.
Brad Dourif
@Annalee Newitz: Sandra Oh would make a kick-ass Colonial Warrior!
@medeasin: The main thing I didn't like about it was that its highly stylized look was too inconsistent, but I'll watch it anyway...
@Macloserboy: Good call! Who could've forgotten the first time Dina flashed us all in Starship Troopers... then many years later realizing it wasn't all that great. Now if Denise Richards had a shower scene in ST...
@CmdrHunt: Denise Richards in a shower scene.... urge to drool rising...
@ Medeasin
Damn! You beat me to it. You can never have too much Summer and Milla. New poll: How many of us are watching Sarah Connor mainly because of Summer?
What I really appreciate about Milla (aside from the obvious) is that she knows who butters her bread. Could she hold her own in mainstream Hollywood fare? Yeah probably, Will she? Probably not. She's now typecast, but rather than bitch about it (Tobey MacGuire I'm looking at you) she embraces it and we get good fun movies where the main character doesn't look like they're just doing it for a paycheck.
I actually couldn't vote of any of these people. I don't care if someone is in more than one movie, I can actually separate the actor from the role. I really don't understand people who always see a certain actor in one role that made them who they were in their minds' eye.
And Eccleston is not a 'classic sci-fi actor' he's only had four sci-fi roles for fuck's sake. And all of those within the last 7 years. Unless you want to count his role as The Happy Mondays drug hook-up in 24 Hour Party People as sci-fi.
And it looks like he seems to be only getting more sci-fi roles, which is, well, disgusting tbh.
Oh look he was in ExistenZ, make that five roles. Oh wait, he was 'seminar leader'. I guess American films can only cast him in sci-fi roles, which again, is disgusting.
Lots of the actors in this pole have a huge range, but apparently Malcolm MacDowell is only good as the sci-fi villain in idiots' eyes.
I never tire of women, particularly attractive and intelligent women, in science fiction.
What annoys me are actors who aren't taking it seriously, playing it as a game, turning SF into comedy. For example, Will Smith.
But then, that could just be the type of movies he's cast in...
@aspiringexpatriate: Your comment on not being able to separate actors from the roles made me think of one person I never want to see in a sci-fi movie again.
Tom Cruise.
@comp_wiz101: I shamefully raise my hand, because saying I watch Sarah Connor Chronicles for Lena Headey is not justifiable enough even though she is milf candy.
I also raise my hand as being one who watched the first few episodes of the Terminator series for Lena Headey and Summer Glau.
And Sandra Oh would be fantastic on BSG. It's a little disappointing that most people only know her through Grey's Anatomy.
As for Milla, I agree that her best role was when she wasn't speaking for the first half of Fifth Element.
I'm tired of Wil Smith as an ultra-hip, ultra cool guy. He's the same guy in every movie.
And while we're speaking about Jeff Combs, a new Re-animator movie is in the works. Joy!
I agree with the above posters, I never tire of Jeffrey Combs. I'd love to see more of him.
Same with Bruce Campbell, but he's also ubqiuitous.
I think Amy Acker has said in interviews she's done so many scifi roles that she joked to her old acting teacher he should be teaching a class in scifi roles.
Who's the guy I expect to be in random scifi movies (or used to be)? Sam Neil.
And voice acting is another category. Hardest working man in voice acting (scifi or not scifi)? Phil Lamarr. He's in EVERYTHING.
@aspiringexpatriate: Agreed, I couldn't exactly fathom Christopher Eccleston as "classic". Though I did vote for that one since it's become just a tad too precious.
@Spiral: Jeffrey Combs has been called the Poor Man's Bruce Campbell, which I find hilarious!
