There's more to being one of the Doctor's companions than adventures through space and time, according to Doctor Who's Freema Agyeman: The gig is a good resume-builder, too. In an interview with Digital Spy, Agyeman not only explained how Martha Jones got her job with UNIT, but also what to expect when the character goes from her Torchwood appearances back to the Tardis in the upcoming fourth season of Who.
Agyeman explained that the unnamed "highly impeccable source" that helped Martha get the job with UNIT was a very familiar face:
The fact that it was the Doctor? Thing is, when I go back into Doctor Who and the Doctor and Martha meet up again, they do talk about the fact that she's worked at UNIT. So it is re-iterated and explained more. But it was him that got her the job there, yeah... [W]hen they do meet again it's more in a professional capacity. She's outgrown him really. She was always mature, independent and all those things but she was still a bit wide-eyed with him. And that's what's gone. She still really respects him and knows he's far beyond her intellect and the rest of it, but she was dominated by him and now there's a different dynamic there. Ultimately they're the same people, so there's still that connection, but it's a different dynamic. On that different dynamic:
They've still got this friendship but there's somebody else in Martha's life now so she doesn't need The Doctor in that respect. That part of her soul has been fulfilled. That attraction has dissipated and it's quite professional. It's nice to see how they've moved on, because she did feel quite strongly about him.And as to the possibility of Martha appearing post-Who season four?
I would like to continue a little bit with Martha. I don't know how, or in what capacity, but I feel there is a little bit more I could do with her. I would like to stay within the family, whichever way... the door is kind of left ajar, in some ways, I guess, so we will see - but I would definitely like to stick around.

Must not drool. Sorry, Martha fan.
I think we can expect to feel the stinging contrast between the smart and sassy Martha Jones and the bellowing one-note Donna. Here's to hoping that Catherine Tate turns out to be Sally Sparrow in an unfunny suit!
@Justin K. Rivers: Sally Sparrow was effin' sweet.
I know everybody was down on the whole "Donna" thing and episode...
but how many other Dr. Who companions were as big of an entertaining train wreck as her?
I loved the "Donna" episode as it was very, very different from what you usually see in a companion. The only other companion to be anything close to her was "Ace" and she was pretty damn fun and removed from the normal as well.
Yes, as removed from the normal it was enjoyable, but an entire series of it?
I wonder if he'll even have a companion in the 2009 movies, cause really, Tate has other things to do, and apparently they're not throwing Martha in with him again as companion, which is kinda lame. Torchwood Martha rocks.
I don't mind Donna.
But I'm from the "Anybody except Piper" school of companions.
I'm really going to miss Martha when Series 4 starts. That said, it looks as if Donna's grown quite a bit. Her speech in the trailer was great.
A solo Doctor might be kinda cool for the movies. But I wouldn't mind stand-alone "companions" not unlike Donna in the Runaway Bride and Astrid in Voyage of the Damned. Or maybe a "Three Doctors approach" with Eccleston and McGann.
Still waiting for the return of Sally Sparrow...
@cirby: me too!
@AdamL: I'm with you on that. Big Martha-fan, though; when I heard she was quitting, I was so sure the next companion'd be Sally Sparrows. Imagine my disappointment...
@AdamL: A Three Doctors with Eccleston and McGann would be awesome. It would also give the much-anticipated nod to McGann, especially since it has been shown that the film is, indeed, canon in the new series. It would also be strangely appropriate, not only to cement the uniqueness, as it were, of the new show, but also to tie the new and the original firmer together (the film having begun with Sylvester McCoy, and all).
However, I seriously doubt RTD is going to go in that direction at all.
@jbq: Sorry, that first one was supposed to be @cirby: ...
I'm really looking forward to Donna as the new companion. Also, the appeal of Sally Sparrow escapes me. I have no idea why fans love her so much (although "Blink" was a great episode).
@Justin K. Rivers: Please, please, please let Catherine Tate appear on Doctor Who [or Torchwood!], as any character; I'm not bothered ; )
@edgyspice: She was a twee blonde lass, and Rose-fans are suckers for that sort of thing.
