Ronald D. Moore and David Eick sat down and went over the different types and social systems and moralities they've created for the new Battlestar Galactica, including the need to the government (and not just the military) to bring down the heavy hand of torture from time to time, and how the legal system works in the BSG-verse. These audio interviews are the kind of geekery you usually only get when fans debate these facets of the show in a forum somewhere, but they wax poetic for over 30 minutes, and that's not even including their thoughts on the politics, economy, and the fight for Cylon rights in their show. Hit the above links for the audio files, and keep staring at the clock until new episodes air. [Concurring Opinions]

Speaking of the law, last night's Lost really blew it. Having Jack testify for the defense before Kate's mom flaked for the prosecution in a criminal trial for crude plot manipulation at the expense of credibility reminded me that Lost is created by the same people behind Alias.
How about something nice and simple and comprehensive? Like, aside from the fact that it's outstandingly ineffective at eliciting the kind of information a "good" society would want, the damage it does to that society is worse than any benefit. Yes, there ARE worse things than losing a city to a nuke.
If your intention is to obtain a confession at any cost, then use it to convict somebody in a kangaroo court, torture's your ticket. If you want a society worth living in, you can't allow any state support for it whatsoever. That's not to say an individual may not torture, but that person needs to understand that if they get caught, the society they're trying to protect will chuck them in jail for a good, long time.
