We've already mentioned the John Woo-produced anime sequel Appleseed: Ex Machina and spoken with director Shinji Aramaki, but Warner Video was on hand at WonderCon, handing out a billion postcards to remind people that it comes out DVD on March 11th. They even had a screening of it on Saturday night during WonderCon, although it faced stiff competition from parties featuring costumed fans and tipsy publicity reps. If you missed that, then peek at the clip below and find out what the world of Appleseed is all about.
The film is a Matrix-meets-cyborgs story featuring incredible animation, tons of bullets, lots of John Woo signature slow-motion, and even some cyborg doves. It's arguably, in this blogger's opinion, superior to the original Appleseed, and is at its best when things devolve into pure bullets and octane action. Thankfully, the multi-layered story is cerebral fodder as well as eye candy, so you won't get bored while you watch another clip of armor-piercing bullets get emptied into mindless robo-slaves.

I was watching my Samurai Champloo box set this weekend and stumbled across a trailer for the first Appleseed movie. I have never seen it but the trailer peaked my interest.
Applesee is the unadulterated shit.
And so is Vexille, if you can score that.
And I'm hanging out like a hungry feral dog for this! :D
Briareos is the business.
I got to see "Appleseed" a month ago on Teletoon, and IT RAWKED! I eagerly await this new iteration...
It looks pretty BA, I'll try to catch it as a rental first though.
yay~ Appleseed! Shirow's work hands-down dominates the mech sector. GITS, still my favorite.
@cyr3n: GITS is awesome!! I even really enjoyed Stand Alone Complex. I havent seen GITS2 yet.....i really need to catch up on my anime.
GITS2 was teh awesome on the big-screen, even though its plot is a mess. The first Appleseed and GITS are mandatory viewing for anyone who likes watching cyborgs blowing up robots and tanks real good.
Appleseed is porn for the eyes. Soooo awesome to watch. The opening scenes in the bombed-out city rocked. But the movie was too short. I would have liked it even more if they fleshed out the characters a little more.
Can't wait to see Appleseed 2.
Nothing beats the GITS movies and TV series. They're my faves.
The new CG/cell shaded flicks have definately got the look and feel of Shirow's Olympus down cold, even improving on the Manga in their sheer magnitude. I just kept watching the first one and thinking to myself The real Bri would never pull that crap on Deunan.
Hopefully this installment will see them shacked up and deep in debt from all the toys they've bought, as the manga saw them. Guges don't come cheap, y'know.
And it looks like Briareos's landmake makes it in this time. Nice!
This is great news although describing it as a "Matrix-meets-cyborgs story" is kind of like describing the new Indiana Jones movie as "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune-meets-Area 51 story". The Appleseed universe was in place almost 15 years before the Wachowski boys put The Matrix onscreen.
Just saying.
"In the future... a police state will seem reasonable... to a Manichaean numbnuts like John Woo. But on the bright side... at least we pronounce 'machina' correctly. Catch it on exclusive limited-edition DVD. *explosion*"
I wasn't sure about the 3D animation reboot of Appleseed, but it was actually a pleasure to watch. I'm looking forward to this sequal *runs off to update netflix queue*
@El_Bandito: ... Saying "It's the shit", I can understand... but the "unadulterated" just throws me off and it sounds negative again.
If I can be spared the shameless plug, I am actually (as long as nothing has changed without my knowing) interviewed on the special features for the American DVD, coming out on March 11. I work for MPS, Inc. (www.MechaPS.com), the world's first company dedicated to building real, marketable bipedal heavy vehicles (mechs). No, they do not look like Landmates, and don't fly - like I said, they're being developed to be marketable (and manufacturable) for actual commercial use. But myself and the CEO/Project Coordinator of MPS were both interviewed as to the plausibility of Landmate technology, some of the aspects of our business, and our thoughts on the Appleseed movies. Given all that, I've got two big reasons to be psyched about the DVD, the second of which is of course that it looks like it will be significantly more awesome than the 2004 one, which was sweet all on its own. So, check out the interview with me (Ryan Marlow, PR guy) when you grab the DVD!
@RedReticle: so, what kind of "commercial" mechs? Like the one from Aliens, able to lift large objects? And besides lifting large objects easily, what other real-world use could be for mechs that could not be fulfilled by some standard vehicle?
@RedReticle: Cool stuff. Do you guys have any prototype pictures or sketches? All I could find on the site were the lego shots and the two 3D renders.
Wow, I was kinda scared that this was going to be a crap version, but I guess I'll buy the BD version.
@Ghede: mmm, more unadulterated shit for me!
@Belabras: Prototype pictures: unfortunately not. Two reasons: A) IP protection, it's easier to reverse engineer than you might think, B) seriously ugly - visual unattractiveness in current condition is hard to overstate. And yes, we do get a lot of flak about not having pictures, but that's the way it is right now, until we've got something a little meatier to show off. The DVD feature will mostly be our discussion and commentary (probably overlaid with considerable amounts of clips from the move), not concept animations of our vehicles, but we have many more - and considerably better - concept animations in the works right now. I will push for an io9 feature on us in a little while when we have some of that new eye candy to serve up.
For anyone who's close, we will be paneling on Saturday March 29th and Sunday March 30th at SakuraCon 2008 in Seattle, WA, and you'll get a much better chance to see some samples of our work and talk to the Team up there. We will also be down in LA for Anime Expo in July, and will appear at various universities in California throughout the year.
Does anything NOT blow up? I liked the looks of the ships, but the Bad Robot thing is really dull.
I have nothing constructive in my comment because I am too busy salivating over this.
