io9 and Last Gasp Press co-sponsored a benefit for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund on Saturday night at WonderCon, and it was smashing. A ton of comic book artists came and drew at a table while we got drunk, and then CBLDF auctioned the art off to raise money for the fight for free speech in the comic book world. Here's a "before" picture of your intrepid editors (l-r that's Charlie Jane, Annalee, Graeme, and Kevin). Some after photos below.
Sadly nobody captured the moment when I was a little tanked up, walked up to Brian Posehn from the Sarah Silverman Program (he's also done a postapocalyptic comic book called The Last Christmas), and yelled, "Sarah Silverman Program ROCKS!!!" Bless his heart, Posehn just rolled his eyes instead of punching me.
You can see more photos here, by Alexis Barrera from Brain Eater Books.

I didn't know Charlie was in the Dandy Warhols.
Great party, it was good to meet some of the folks behind this great site.
I was pretty beat but luckily a college of mine worked nearby and his place of employment had a nap room. after about 2 hours of shut eye i was ready to go out again.
io9 should have more drinks, and on a regular basis.
Ah, but I do miss SanFran sometimes. All the cool stuff happens there.
I'm in D.C. and the whole "watch politicians sell out, break the law, and dodge any sort of accountability" thing got stale years ago..(thanks for sending us Feinstein by the way...Can we send you Barry in exchange?")
...Apologies, I wax political. Really, though. I must get over there at some point.
Kevin, that's an impressive tongue. Does it reach your eyebrows? :)
I'd love to see more events like this, at other cons in other cities. I'm unlikely to travel to the west coast for a con, but Boston, D.C., and (of course) Philly cons are very attractive -- especially if there is an IO9 presence.
@Plague: Well, I've been told I'm a rock star...
@Bob Bruhin: @Bob Bruhin: You never know, we might try to make it to Arisia.
@Plague: I think she was pissed that she was the only one of us who bothered to wear a color other than black.
Ooooooooohhhhhhhh. I get it now.
To clarify: I keep my comics in bags and boxes made by this company called Comic Defense. Whenever I heard about a CBLDF fundraiser, I was terribly confused. I thought maybe there was important research going on into comic book storage techniques, and they needed more money for their high-tech labs.
@zeppelined: Wow high tech comic book storage labs. Sounds groovy.
y'all should totally come to arisia (again for annalee and charlie and for the first time (afaik) for kevin and graeme).
also, more boozing. yes, yes indeed.
charlie, the comic tights you had on were awesome btw.
@capntim: she has the best tights in the universe. I am jealous!
@capntim: wow thanks!
@Annalee Newitz: I've been hoping for extradimensional storage spaces. I live in a small house.
I kept trying to read Charlie's tights, but she kept moving on me. And reading that back, it sounds so wrong.
All I know is that at some point, I lost track of Graeme, and suddenly all the beer was gone. Probably just coincidence.
np.
Since this thread is going to be checked out by locals i thought this might be a good place to inquire about what people have planned for the re-appearance of battlestar on the airwaves.
a battlestar party with io9 readers could be a good time.
@capntim: I like the way you think...
i'd offer but i recently got crammed into a smaller space and my projector only does 640x480. which is pretty sad by todays standards. Plus i'm in the east bay.
I have a friend with a nice sized winery tasting room that i could talk to, but that is also in the east bay in emeryville, and i'm not sure if he has cable running to the winery.
if anyone else has ideas feel free to throw them out.
@capntim: You could come to my lake house in South Dakota.
Plenty of space, nice T.V., and only half a continent away!
Fantastic party! I bought this great drawing of an octopus, but I don't know the artist's name, and I can't read his signature. It's so hard to start over at my age.
My daughter loved going to 111 Minna. She lives here in SF (I'm from Portland) and has been wondering what the club was like.
Hey, I know what you mean I just moved to Portland from D.C., and am I glad I did!
@Miranda Kali:
Rusty That artist i believe was Alexis Barerra.
I convinced him to draw it, he will be thrilled that someone purchased it.
make that "Alexis Barrera"
@capntim:Thanks, Capn Tim. Alexis contacted me, so I got to thank him personally. Donating for original art was such a great idea. I hope nobody minds if I borrow it for CSTS 2008 in June!
sigh. I'm sorry I couldn't make it.
Charlie is one tall drink o' water, ain't she? is there a photo of the fabulous tights?
also: io9 meetup at Baycon?
Please, oh please have a gathering at the San Diego Comicon for any cause or reason. We SoCal readers would love to meet you guys in person!!
