Rumored Star Wars Game Has Stretchy Ships

One of the best video games to come out of the Star Wars universe was The Knights of the Old Republic, which is set 4,000 years before the events in A New Hope, and was also the first RPG set inside the Star Wars world. The original game came out in 2003 with a sequel in 2004, and if this rumored concept art turns out to be right, then LucasArts is working on a tre-quel for the series. Above is "Dashaad's Fighter," which looks a bit like a TIE-Fighter that's been through a taffy-pulling machine. Find more Republican goodness in the gallery below.

These images came from deep within the bowels of James Zhang's website, where you can kill a good hour or two paging through his amazing illustrations and listening to trippy ambient music. He's worked on several LucasArts projects, including KOTOR II, so hopefully the rumors have some merit to them. We'd love to do some spacefaring and lightsaber-swinging on our next-gen systems, especially in the Star Wars-verse.

KOTOR III concept art captured?

  • The first two were fun (though i never got to finish them). I too cannot wait to see what that game will be like on the Next Gens. I am also eagerly awaiting a next Gen Battlefront game.

  • Looks more like a new Cylon raider or a ST Klingon Scout Ship, but that's just me.

  • I'm not really interested in any Knights of the Old Republic game unless it's made by Bioware. Still, interesting art work. Also you spelt thre-quel wrong.

  • Those drawings in the left center box look very Probotish.....

  • Bioware better have the reins back for this one. After pumping out the ridiculously awesome Mass Effect (Jade Empire from a few years back was excellent also), I'd love to see them come back to this territory with the experience they've gained since the first KOTOR.

  • Plus, with these images being from 2004 I'm fairly sure we would've heard about this game by now. Which isn't ruling out it's existance, just that I doubt they were working on concept art that many years ago.

  • maybe knights of the old republic III will actually have a complete and well rounded plot. i guess i should be thankful that they at least preserved the gameplay of the original...

i'm curious what the best star wars game would be if knights of the old republic is merely one of the best.

  • @tetracycloide: Lego Star Wars. Seriously.

On a random side note - I'm not interested in The Force Unleashed at all.

  • @PriorMarcus:

    No argument.

Of course, I'm so sick of Jedi at this point that I could scream bloody murder, but at least KOTR has a new take on the setting.

  • I'd be surprise that anyone in charge of Star Wars game licensing wouldn't throw themselves at Bioware after playing Mass Effect.

Bioware games always leave me thinking I should stop playing other games because nothing else is as good.

  • @Evdor: So true, I want a Han Solo game ASAP.

  • @PriorMarcus: I think it looks very promising. And for those holding out for a KOTOR III (if it even exists), I think Force Unleashed is more than enough to tide them over.

  • @engtech:

Probably because Lucasarts division is, quite simply money-grubbing freaks. You have to get into their twisted little corporate mindset. Anything with Star Wars will sell, by name recoginition alone. A good Star Wars game will cost quite a bit more (though ultimately perhaps be rewarding) a bad or medicore star wars game will get slapped together and still rake.

Star Wars Battlefront is a perfect example. Make no mistake, the game is cheap. The engine is borrowed and there really wasn't all that much work done (Honestly, is it pretty? Do they even reach very far at a all? It wasn't even as good looking as the game that MADE its engine!) It still did extremely well due to the Star Wars liscense.

I would like to see a comparitive sales analysis between KoToR and something like that (or god help us, Star Wars Obi-wan), but I'd suspect it's not enough to justify the very large scale in cost to a company that does not seem to care about the quality of the game anymore.

But hey, I'm a bit bitter that they refuse to even touch X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter, so what do I know?

also yeah, a game about Smugglers, or Bounty Hunters would be a breath of fresh air. I think it's extremely telling that one of the best (non-KoToR) SW games that came was Republic Commando. So, so nice to play through a game without coming across a lightsaber at some point.

  • @Bluecell:

Sorry for the double post, but I also want to adress this, namely, ask what you're seeing that I'm not.

They've been going on and on about the new physics engine. Oh, now AI will interact with physics! (Which seems to mean clutch to each other/objects like glue). But that's all I've heard about the project. Level design? Nah. In-depth combat? Nah. Weapon variety? Nah. I mean, essentially I've seen nothing but polished versions of the stuff I've been playing in say, Jedi Knights.

It always makes me nervous when a game company goes on and on about a single premise or gimmick in a game without touching on the greater whole of it. Every time I've seen a company do that, the game ended up horrible. (Hi there Red Faction!)

  • @the earl of weaver:
    @engtech:

Unfortunately, Bioware really, really unlikely to do another Star Wars game. They have said a bunch over the past few years that they are not very interested in working with other people's IP right now. So LucasArts would have to really sweet-talk them to get them to even consider it.

Now, THAT'S not going to happen because BioWare has a history of refusing to ship games until they are done. LucasArts' marketing doesn't like their developers telling them to piss off. It's one of the big issues that had LA give the licence for KOTOR II to another studio who was more under their thumb. And we all know THAT ended with the game being shipped three months before it was done.

  • @Ryan H: But Bioware are working on the Sonic RPG, so I have hope.

  • @Evdor: It always makes me nervous when a game company goes on and on about a single premise or gimmick in a game without touching on the greater whole of it.

I can think of some counterexamples... the conversation engine of Mass Effect; the cover system of Gears of War; the crash physics of Burnout; the original Starfox being "3-D!"; everything about the Wii and the DS screams "gimmick". But all of those things turned out fine if not completely awesome.

The Force Unleashed looks really fun so far, I guess we'll find out soon. There have been too many awful SW games, though, that much is true.

  • @Evdor: I think my problem is I'm too optimistic about games. I'm often disappointed as a result.
I'm actually very disappointed with my Wii and have contemplated ebaying it.

As for your question, I believe some Star Wars novelist guy wrote the script for the game. The level design has been talked about a bit, ie. enormous indoor spaces.
I'm pretty sure they're focusing on story and force powers and weapons are secondary to that, so you got me there...

But I have to agree with tk, the new engines are the most important part, so that's what they're going to focus on. And Euphoria is leaps and bounds ahead of anything we've seen yet, so why shouldn't they?

I should also note that I haven't owned any Star Wars games to date, save for LEGO Star Wars, so this will all be relatively new.

And Red Faction is a classic, man.

  • @PriorMarcus: i found lego star wars entertaining and the artistic style comedic but felt the gameplay was far to derivative of ratchet and clank to considering it the best star wars game ever. maybe it's unfair of me but i also have a hard time considering a game which borrows its overall plot from other media to be on a completely different level, indeed a lower level, than one that contains an original narrative.

  • @PriorMarcus:

Not quite the same thing. Sonic RPG is for the DS and is being made by BioWare's handheld division which was just started. I think it might even be the first game out of them. So, it makes sense that they are doing a licenced game for that one.

  • Ohh dont forget Force Commander!! That game rocked!!

  • That game sucked!! We need an edit button!! :P

  • That second larger ship bares a liking to Darth Maul's Sith Infiltrator.

  • You guys that say "this ship looks like {other ship}" are victim of the "tastes like chicken" phenom. If all you know is chicken, everything new will fell like you to chicken. What is wrong. Human flesh taste like pork. Not all ships are derivative from star wars, star trek, etc.. bue people always refer that films. That is boring.

But nice looking ships, get Homeworld of EvE Online.

  • @tei: "But nice looking ships, get Homeworld of EvE Online."
Amen. Especially now that Trinity has dropped.

  • The ships represent evolution in the Star Wars world, the Ebon Hawk in Kotor2 was a dead ringer of the Millenium Falcon, its just a bit of nerdgasm, they look similar, because they are meant to.

EvE is a different universe with a different world, and what am I doing ... I should be mining!

  • Am I the only one that is concerned that tei has implied he's tasted people?

    Also, KOTOR3= WANT!
