Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow have an even spicier relationship in Iron Man than we'd expected, judging from this newly released trailer. And the use of AC/DC lets us know this movie will have big balls. (Sorry, couldn't resist.) More importantly, the new trailer gives us a way clearer sense of the movie's arc.
We get a nice clear view of the three phases of Iron Man armor in the movie: crude, medium crude, and shiny. Also, we'll definitely get the full storyline from the comics about Tony Stark's pride, and then remorse, about being a weapons maker. It looks as though his change of heart is what turns his mentor Obadiah Stane into his arch-enemy Ironmonger.
Oh hey, and here's a new (I think) plot synopsis:
Based on the long-running Marvel comic book series, Iron Man tells the story of Tony Stark, the enigmatic heir to the Stark Enterprises fortune. A driven inventor and executive who seems to have it all, Tony is haunted by his dark side. Though he commands his empire by day, by night he secretly becomes Iron Man, the living embodiment of decades of defense spending and innovation. Strapping on billions of dollars worth of state-of-the-art armor and weaponry each night to fight crime, terrorism and corporate espionage, Tony begins to crack under the strain of his fractured lifestyle and must ultimately confront the one enemy he can never beat — himself.

I've been thinking about this movie a lot recently, and I'm not sure others share my opinions or concerns, but I've tried to move past the hype and really think about the acting, the technology, the imagery, the plot, and I guess the choice of music, and you know, the thing is, well, I guess my thoughts can be summed best as follows.
YAAAAAYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!! YAY YAY YAY WOO-HOOOO!!!!!
I'm really happy for Johnny Fav.
I think this could really cement him as a big budget director. I'm not sure that's what he wants but I guess it's always nice to have the option.
It's one of the few movies this year I really want to see. Hopefully it does well enough that we get a sequel and can see War Machine
Oh man ... that Sabbath walk off ... I would pay just to see that. I'm going to see that again, that's two comic book films I'm hyped about. Bring on Stark and Watchmen, I can take the disappointment, I'm British.
Looks like a well-done comic book-movie. I always liked Iron man, probably because I thought he was really just a robot. Where is the propellant stored for his rocket-ability? Could be fun.
As per usual with these things, great production and solid acting are undone with stupid dialogue. It plagued Batman Begins and with that "I want to protect the people I've put in harm's way" line it threatens to derail this. That they've already wussed out about Tony sleeping around is another bad sign. I like how they said it was "for the kids" but don't seem to have toned the violence down any.
Is there a link to an HD version of this yet?
I can't really put into words how excited I am about this movie, but the phrase "physically aroused" comes to mind.
Growing up my favorite DC character was The Flash and my favorite Marvel hero was Iron Man. All the sadness I had when Barry Allen was killed off, in Crises on Infinite Earths, is finally replaced with joy because of this.
What worries me though is I was the only kid I knew who liked Iron Man, I hope there is an audience for this character.
OMG that is awesome...I cannot wait to see that
@Midwesterner in NYC: Trust me there will be. Me and my co-workers are already salivating to go see this at the Lincoln Center IMAX, and none of us were Iron Man fans growing up. Hell, half of them didn't read any comics at all.
I predict that this film will be frequently referenced by the McCain campaign.
Look awesome - I like the line "I want to protect the people I've put in harm's way" that to me sums up the whole point of Iron man to Tony, his regret for being a war enabler and for the deaths that are on his hands. Mind you I also loved Batman Begins like most sane people :)
It will rock. Hard.
BEAST PANTS!

Can't beat himself? Hell, I beat myself twice just writing this comment
F**K YEAH! WOOHOO! AWESOME!
I am going to put myself out there with this but i think this is going to be the best Marvel movie yet. The only one i can think of that could compete with this is going to be the sequel where they bring out war machine.
Awesomeness embodies... er, enarmored.
I'm sold.
@EDread83:
Wait until the third movie when they trot out the MANDARIN....
I thought Mandarin was IN this?
Just call me "fired up".
@Hekkashesh: That would be awesome! It would be cool if in the sequel to the new Hulk movie thats coming they call on stark to help and show the Hulkbuster suit. But i am fearing what they avengers movie is going to be like. Fingers crossed though that they dont screw that up.
@Plague: no i think this is going to be more about Iron Man saving civilians trapped in war zones and then i think the baddie is going to be a variation of Titanium Man from what i have seen in the trailers.
@EDread83: my bad, its not Titanium Man but as Charlie points out its Iron Monger
other than adding my voice to those who think this movie is going to kick ass, I have a small request for the IO9 writers.
When you link to these new trailers, could you find it in your hearts to include a link to the source as well? Save all us poor readers the effort of having to dig it up ourselves to get a higher quality version.
The comic story was a tiny bit more involved than that....
He was heir to his father's Stark Industries...
That was taken over by Stane and farmed out as a Houston
air compressor manufacturing concern, apparently [starkindustries.com]
Stane just changed the last two letters on the big sign out front.
Anyway, Tony put his OWN company together much later, and THAT was
Stark Enterprises. :^P
I was already excited for spring. Now I'm giddy.
So Iron Man's like Batman, but less emo? Works for me.
Awesome trailer. We Canadians got ganked by Canadian commercials so we missed it when it aired during Lost last night, which by the way was an incredible episode! Miles' forgetfullness was a bit convenient to avoid paradoxes, but otherwise a much more exciting episode than the previous week. But I digress...
I picked up the HD version of this trailer from IGN.com and have watched it a few times already. Can't wait for this movie.
@Ryan H: I'll definitely link to the source next time, sorry about that. Although the HD version of the trailer didn't work last night when I tried to play it.
I kind of hate to admit it, but I'm really looking forward to this movie now. :D
Where can we post about how badass that episode of LOST was last night? Desmond is my constant. Constant BADASS!!!!
May still seems far away. Dammit.
@Midwesterner in NYC: I read a ton of comics but never got in to Iron Man as a kid, even though my older brother had tons of his stuff, but I'm so sold on this movie.
I love the subtle nods to the progression of the character in the comic - escape from the terrorists, grey suit, build the next gen, gold suit (due to the color of the alloy, presumably), final version, gold alloy with some sporty red.
And it totally didn't feel like it was shoehorned in - it felt natural.
I love you Jon Favreau. In a manly, perhaps brotherly way, of course...
...you handsome devil, you.
first thoughts were oh god what is this going to be like. i've been burnt before by exciting trailers (transformers, hulk, spiderman). i love ironman and have read his comics on and off since the 70s so i am a little precious about how he is portrayed on the big screen. but now i must admit the hype has now infected me and i have to say i am very excited and can't wait to see this film. please marvel gods, don't let it be like fantastic 4.
is it just me or are comic movies getting better?
@JohnnyZito: Favereau made this partly to show that Elf wasn't a fluke (Seriously, does anyone remember Zarutha?). Also, studios are more likely to let him do "vanity" projects if he can deliver a big ticket popcorn movie evry 2-3 years.
Aww man. The shorter trailers were better. More of the techno looking proto-suits, less Stark turning whiny/emo/having a conscious. He had three emo moments in a one minute clip :/
@cde:
The character is an alcholic. Isn't that the whole Iron Man Schtick? "I was a ruthless businessman who eventually realized that I was screwing over everybody for my own greed?"
I admit it's a clunky line, but still.
@Evdor: I'm not sure. I didn't read much Iron Man comics. I always thought he was a rich asshole who liked the glory of superherodom. And being able to rub it into other people's faces that he's rich and can build anything.
But even so, less whining, more giant robot-suit action plz.
My hopes and expectations for this movie just improved by a bazillion times.
Lets hope that this movie makes up for all those other lame excuses they called adaptations. And if it does do justice, lets keep making them this way from now on. And if it doesn't, well, Hollywood can keep trying.
