You've probably heard the Wilhelm Scream dozens of times in different movies and television shows without realizing it, but it's one of those things that once you hear, you'll always be able to identify it afterwards. It's now become an in-joke amongst sound editors who try to insert it into their films whenever there's a perfect moment that just needs an over-the-top scream. It began as a Warner Bros. stock sound effect, but was revived and put to serious use by Star Wars sound designer Ben Burtt. Now the thing just won't die. Find out more in our screaming triviagasm below.
- The first appearance of the scream was in 1951's Distant Drums, and was used when a man was eaten by an alligator.
- The sound is named the "Wilhelm Scream" after Pvt. Wilhelm gets shot in the leg by an arrow in the 1953 film The Charge at Feather River, and screams as he falls over.
- The sound was used in eight more films in the 1950s, including 1954's Them!, about giant, nuclear-mutated ants.
- The sound persisted into the 1960s, appearing in eight more movies, including the campy Hercules Against The Moon Men, where Hercules battles monsters from the moon.
- While Wilhelm started to flag in the 1970s, Star Wars sound designer Ben Burtt found a reel labeled "Man Being Eaten By Alligator" in the Warner archives and used the sound when Luke shoots a Stormtrooper who falls down a shaft in the Death Star.
- Burtt later tracked the sound back to its original use in Distant Drums, although he was the first to call it the "Wilhelm Scream."
- The sound has since been featured in every Star Wars and Indiana Jones movie. In fact, it was even used in The Star Wars Holiday Special.
- It's a mystery as to who the actor was that recorded the original scream, but the most likely suspect is character actor and singer Sheb Wooley, whose name appeared on a memo as a sound extra for Distant Drums. He's best known for his hit song "The Flying Purple People Eater".
- The sound has been used in over 75 movies (most recently in Cloverfield), dozens of television shows (like Doctor Who), and even numerous video games... including many of the Star Wars titles.

I like to imagine that every character that ends up using that scream is just a different reincarnation of the same guy. Boy does he have some shitty luck.
@EDread83: Kinda like that guy Arthur Dent kept accidentally killing over and over in the Hitchhiker series.
There was a great piece about the Wilhelm on "On the Media" several years ago.

@joemono: exactly. i thought that portion of the book was hilarious.
It's the Amen break of sound editing.

Wher'd that clip of Han fighting a stormtrooper come from? Was that from the Holiday Special?
@Frozen-Tex: Yeah and that is about the highest quality shot of that I've ever seen. Some of those uses are near unforgivable.
@Frozen-Tex: It is indeed!
@Garrison Dean:
@Kevin Kelly:
Now I know. And knowing is half the battle...
Awesome - never knew why this sound effect was used so many times (other than the fact that it sounds hilarious). Thanks for enlightening me on the history of the Wilhelm Scream. I think it works best when the guy in question gets shot/thrown/falls off of something, like in LOTR or Indiana Jones.
How many Red Shirts on Star Trek expired with that sound?
I love the wilhelm. It's something that I remember as a kid and wondering about everytime I heard it. Then when the internet finally came around i was able to track it down.
the best part is that its just one out of many heavily recycled sound bytes.
And now I look forward to spotting it in "Crystal Skull."
LOL @ eDread's first comment.
and...
Dear Bloggers,
Can we please stop equating everything in the entire universe to an orgasm? Nothing anybody posts is that cool (except maybe the Ironman trailer).
Sincerely,
me
@SunZhiQian: Dude, we love orgasms and we just can't stop thinking about them. Sorry!
@SunZhiQian: Yeah, in fact MORE stuff should be compared to orgasms.
ok, I'll just sit here and have a poutgasm...
Yup... even more info on that legendary scream here:

Does anyone know the name of the other overused scream? If you watch the trailer for "Shrooms" you'll hear it at the end and will absolutely know what I'm talking about. I call it "Uriah" for reasons that should be obvious.
For me, the Uriah is cooler than the Wilhelm because it's so annoying. It's popped up in so many movies and commercials, but I have no idea what it's called.
@mechno: I think that's the one used when you'd fall off of a cliff in Dark Forces.
@Frozen-Tex: The other half of the battle is bloody, bloody combat.
YES! Only the other day I was wondering what this sound was and why its been in every big film ive seen, Thanks io9!
@EDread83: It's like a Quantum-leap type character is bouncing from movie to movie and only stays long enough to get killed before bouncing to another.
Maybe someone should make a TV series out of it.
What's funny is that soundtrack, the apple sound editing software, has a lot of different royalty free screams called 'chrishelm and zachhelm and marthahelm', etc
Sound editors and foley men rock.
Ah the Wilhelm... love it.
What movie/show is the one with the giant blue ball that turned that dude into a skeleton?
@Joessandwich: That's Hellboy! Well worth a watch if you haven't seen it.
@bonniegrrl: I have a commentgasm whenever Bonnie comments on one of my posts.
This just makes me appreciate the campyness of movies even more :D Campgasm even.
and Kevin, really, is this bit of redundancy needed?:
... This video was fake wasn't it?
I'm pretty sure it wasn't used in Toy Story.
@Ghede: Go watch it again. It was used.
Well it also works great if the victim making the scream id being grabbed by a giant ant too... See Them!
lol i just saw the Toy Story comment...
I remember laughing out loud when I first saw Toy Story and heard Buzz do that scream... was a perfect comedy moment for anyone who the inside joke about that sound effect.
@cde: Damn, score one for io9, -1 for my memory.
i love that this clip starts with the venture bros, by far the best original show to come out of adult swim...except maybe the brak show.
The Nazgul Scream from LOTR features Fran Walshe and PJ joked that was the sound she made when he told her he had just bought the film rights for the Silmarilion
the uk show "primeval" manages to use that scream in every episode.
great vid, great post. thanks!
I hear this all the time ever since I learned about it last year.
I'll go you one better.
It's not a sci-fi montage, but it's pretty complete:

Also IMDB keeps a page on all the films to use Wilhelm (linked in the post).
It's kinda great...
There's another scream that I first heard in Goldeneye for the N64. It was the sound you got when Xenia was shot, I believe. Kind of a high pitched "ugh" sound. That one turns up all the time in commercials.
I think it was one of the dying-Bob noises in Marathon, too! They screamed it when they'd fall off something.
The best way to watch Hercules Against the Moon Men is the classic MST3K version. SANDSTORM!!! SAAAAANDSTORM!!! DEEEEP HURTING!!!!
I have been noticing a female wilhelm scream for a while now, a wilhelmina if you will...
do you have any trivia on that?
I was just searching the internet for that--so far it's appeared on Heroes twice as a scream from Claire (which sounds NOTHING like Hayden Panettiere's actual voice) and I'm just now noticing it on the montage leading up to the DVD menu of Season 5 of Buffy.
YES!!! I've just been searching for that scream too!
I always associated it with a video game called timesplitters (which is rather comedic in nature) and it was weird when i first heard it on 'Heroes', since it's supposed to be much more serious. I've heard it on an Australian comedy called 'We Can be Heroes', and just tonight i heard that scream on 'The Butterfly Effect' when the girl's brother got stabbed in the back.
Why isn't there more information on this particular scream. It seems to be have appeared all over the place over the past few years.
Add another one, Harold and Kumar 2! Happens when they jump the two KKK members taking a piss :)
