Shia LaBeouf May Still Be The Last Man (Er, Boy) On Earth

ShiaBanana.jpgDirector D.J. Caruso still wants Shia LaBeouf to portray the lonely male survivor Yorick in gender apocalypse comic Y: The Last Man, which apparently means he's trying to make a career out of directing movies starring "The Beef." Caruso's already made Disturbia and Eagle Eye with The Beef, and now has plans to make a trilogy out of Y featuring Shia saying "no no no no no" a lot. While there's no doubt that Shia has some unexplained mind-control power that makes teenagers flock to him, we don't think he'd do justice to the role, although if the other choice is Topher Grace (Y artist Pia Guerra's choice), then we say bring on the LaBeouf.

The heartening news we should probably take away from this is that the director wants to turn it into a trilogy after centering the first movie on the first 12 issues of the series:

I see it as a trilogy because there is so much to put in. Where the first movie ends doesn't even relate to the last issue because it's so far down the road. It hasn't succeeded so far in the screenplay format because everyone keeps trying to throw everything in there. We're only taking this [first] story so far.
Admittedly, we kept hoping this would show up as an ongoing series on HBO or Showtime, where we'd be able to recap and dissect it weekly, but we fear that the first movie might irk us to our cores... which means we'd have to sit through two more. You know, just how the first Star Wars prequel was so bad, but you saw the other two thinking that somehow they'd get better.

I just watched Disturbia for the first time this weekend, and I will grudgingly admit that Shia isn't bad in it. However, the ending of that movie was so sickeningly cotton-candy sweet after featuring actors swimming in sewage pools full of rotting corpses, that our main worry is that D.J. Caruso will completely miss the mark on Y. What do you think?

  • Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. But sometimes a banana is a blatant dick joke.

Why the hatin' on Topher Grace? With the right director, he can do some great work. Is Caruso the right director? Hm.

  • Shia's definitely a better choice than Topher for Yorick, but I still vote for Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He was way cool in Brick, which is a great movie.

I'm most interested in the casting of 355 though.

  • The casting of LaBeouf begs the question: Y?

  • When I read that Pia Guerra's choice was Topher Grace, I felt justified. From the moment I heard about the possibility of a movie, I thought he should play Yorick- he's got the nerdy, annoying, big-mouth thing down to a science. No offense to Shia, but I just don't see him in the part... unless they plan on changing Yorick to fit him.

  • I think Topher would be the better fit. Attitude-wise. then again....tehy aren't called actors for nothin ($2.50 otta do it).

I think Lafeouf does a great job in the movies he appears in, as he has the ability to make the viewer suspend disbelief while watching him. He is not AX model attractive, nor does he have perfect diction or line delivery. He very much reminds me of Jeff Goldbloom. He is quirky, and interesting, and believable.

Topher, I just don't like him. No real reason, I just think he's a putz.

shia is an ambigram of my name and i think he's cute

  • Again, I'll admit to not hating Shia like most. I've read Y since the beginning and think he'd be able to handle the nerdy/funny thing pretty well. I don't really see Topher at all. For what it was, Disturbia was pretty tightly crafted, decently shot/acted, and I agree with io9 that the ending kinda blew. And they just shouldn't have admitted that it was a quasi remake of Rear Window - bad Universal, bad.

  • @TheyCallMeLibrarianHot: I agree. Sure Topher Grace is annoying, but so is Yorrick.

  • Am I really the only one who thinks Shia LaBeouf is a generally bad actor? I'm afraid of what he might do to Indiana Jones (Make it unwatchable).

  • Can anyone else see Gina Torres as 355? I know I can.

@Ryan H: i can't see anything past that banana. talk about disturbia.

  • I'll agree with you on Disturbia, but that's about it. Topher may not be the choice for Yorick, but at least he can play more than one character unlike SL.

I completely agree with apronk on Gordon-Levitt.

  • @Ryan H: Pretty good choice, but I always imagined her a little younger...Jada Pinkett Smith wouldn't be too bad if she was taller and younger too.

  • @Ryan H: You win.

  • In some ways, 355 is a very similar character to Zoe Washburne, though in other ways they're different. It's hard to say whether having them both played by Gina Torres would be a good thing. Maybe.

  • In retrospective this would have been a good role for John Cusack

  • I'm a Shia Labouf hater. Him being featured in the Indiana Jones movie makes me cringe! Although he had great comedic timing in Even Stevens.

  • @apronk: Joseph Gordon-Levitt - I was just gonna say!

What is it with LaBouf? How did he become the It Boy? I don't get his appeal at all.

  • They had better cast a black woman as 355 and not replace her with some white chick. That would bother me to no end.

Also, this movie will be a rarity in the sense that it is an action movie with, essentially, only one (human) male in it for 99% of the time.

  • Ooh, Cusack would be a sweet choice if he were younger. Can you imagine a 42 year-old momma's boy as the last man on Earth?

When I first heard that Shia was planned for Yorick, I didn't even care because I was still crazy-style that they were going to make a movie of the comic book that I tried to force down everyone's throat. This post is trying to ruin my happiness by pointing out the banana and other faults.

Well, at least it's not Bay...

  • Shia LaBeouf has the acting chops of the Michelin Man and all the gravitas of a Twinkie. That said, he may be perfect in the two-note role of Yorick. I'm sorry, but Y - The Last Man has a compelling idea but an unfortunately melodramatic execution. With as much potential as was there, Brian Vaughan wrote a pretty dull story. The main character simply has to be smirky on the one hand and bone stupid on the other which would seem to fit mssr. LaBeouf to a Y. The other characters seem to be there to satisfy young male readers love of lipstick lesbians. Three episodes or 12, I'll have to see who they get to write it before I fork over any cash.

  • Pia can do no wrong on my book, so of course Topher Grace is a perfect choice. Pia wants Topher? Fine. Pia loves milk with lemonade? I can dig it. Pia will vote Republican? Screw you, Obillary.

  • Anybody know if DC/Vertigo is planning a Y omnibus anytime soon?

  • I would prefer Topher, but I think Shia can do a good job. I am just glad they are staying with geeky/manic types so far. They could easily decide to go with a pretty boy OC type. Since the character is damn near comic relief, while the other characters handle most of the action, someone with good comic timing, and a general likability is what it needs.

I think this is one of the comic book series out there that is meant for some sort of serial live action treatment. A series of movies is good, though I still like the idea of it being an HBO series better. They can take more risks, and get more time to tell the story. And unlike most comics, there is a set beginning, middle, and end. Which I think really helps in pacing out the main story. I'm looking at your Lost, X-Files, etc.

  • Hmm...Shia is annoying to me as well. Gordon-Levitt is a good choice. I was thinking Rose Rollins from the L Word as 355.

  • My God, how does he able to drive so much attention to his person....

  • THEY'RE MAKING "Y" INTO A MOVIE?
    Omg.
All is right in the world.
Except for all the hate and murder, of course...
But at least they're turning good graphic novels into movies.

    ~Y
