If you're going to be in Austin for the South by Southwest Interactive Festival, please come by to see io9's Annalee Newitz (that's me!) talk about the future of social revolution with Lifehacker's Gina Trapani, MetaFilter's Jessamyn West, and Linden Labs' Jeska Dzwigalski. The panel is Saturday from 5-6 PM, and it's called "Social Network Coups: The Users Are Revolting!" We'll basically be talking about tomorrow's social protests and revolutions, which will take place on social networks like (for instance) blogs or Digg. It should be a good time. Also, on Sunday night, Gawker Media (io9's parent company) is throwing a party for several Gawker blogs, including io9, Lifehacker, Fleshbot, and Valleywag. 9 - 11 PM at The Side Bar. See you in Austin!

Cool.
If you haven't yet, check out what happened with some of the protests in Burma and Afghanistan late last year. In a nutshell, after the huge police crackdowns, protest organizers stopped trying to put together huge rallies and started staging smaller "lightning protests" using text messaging to congregate and disperse before the guys with the billy clubs arrived.
I am at once jealous and ...well ...thats it..
I have always been a little confused about this SXSW event? Is it an industry event? is it a music/movie/media festival? Who goes to it? Mostly industry people or do lots of 'normal' people?
Austin City Limits I get, this... I get confussed..
@RusM: I almost wrote a Master's Thesis about that.
Every year my band debates whether to submit to SXSW. It's a long trip for us, and the application fee's a little steep, and we lack ambition, so thus far we never have.
@DocGratis: It's actually all of the above. Think Sundance plus a music festival plus an interactive festival. Industry types and regular joes and all.
Aww, now I want to go to SXSW even more! I've wanted to go ever since I moved to San Antonio . . . but my funds have never allowed it. Good luck with the panel, and have fun in my home state, Annalee!
