The long list of totally unnecessary sequels just got a bit longer. A sequel to 1984's The Last Starfighter is finishing up script revisions, and producers are doing some location scouting. Not only that, but original star Lance Guest has verbally agreed to reprise his role. Everything's coming up death blossoms!

This was just on this weekend and looking at the early CGI I wondered how long it would take someone to remake it. I guess a sequel is close enough, but given the power of the video game, I'd say a remake about some kid on his Xbox would be more appropriate.
I for one am happy that this is a Sequel, not a reboot/remake/ or prequel (the last most likely as the orignal was just a redo of Star Wars anyways).
yeah I have to say this along with Tron was one of those movies that while not really setting it's self up as for a sequel, just SCREAMS for it because it was so much fun.
Oh, I don't know... I've long harbored a desire to see a fleet of Gunstars opening a sixer of whoopass on, well, anybody. I'm not a picky guy.
Add in Real Genius 2, and my nostalgia fix will be sated for a few months.
@Macloserboy: I think you've got it. Some kid goes out and buys the hot new "Starfighter" game for the XBOX (or whatever console wins the bidding war for product placement...). We find out that, in the same way that the arcade game was a recruiting or selection tool for the aliens to find the Starfighter who could help them, this game is the same way. Maybe he's playing against someone on XBOX Live or something who turns out to be Lance Guest, who's helping the aliens get someone to replace him in protecting their society against the bad guys. "Achievement unlocked!", and BOOM, there's a Starship landing in his backyard that picks him up and whisks him off to fight the baddies, with Lance Guest in the back seat this time like the guy from the first movie. The ship is now controlled with an XBOX/PS3/Wiimote controller.
Sounds like fun, I'll go see it :)
The original was cute. A sequel could be okay. Charlie Jane, no idea how old you are, but were you born when the first one came out?
@Git Em SteveDave: I wouldn't mind finding out what has been going on with the Flight of the Navigator bunch myself.
I had a geekgasm when Lance Gust showed up on Jericho.
Last Starfighter is just a lovin' spoonful of nerd wish-fullfillment, I'd be up for a sequil.
It starred Rob Morrow, not Lance Gust... Sheesh, and you all call yourselves fans??
:D
I swear I thought it was Morrow for years. Until I saw it again on TV late one night.
@Seth L: Yeah me to because literallyt that day I said to myself... I wonder what he's up to now? Too bad it wasn't a longer role.
@Git Em SteveDave: I dunno... I think that storyline was basically milked dry. I can't imagine what a sequel would accomplish. But it's still a worthwhile cause, even in a remake form.
Is this going to be a sequel to the film (which I loved when I was a kid) or the off-broadway musical? Personally, I'd love to see a Moulin-Rouge style sci-fi film.
Or not.
I just hope Alan Dean Foster writes the new novelization. That guy's the kind of crappy novelizations.
@Garrison Dean: I ALWAYS confuse Last Starfighter with Flight of the Navigator.
@workingonyourinvoice: I did hear Kilmer signed on for a sequel. Of course, he could literally phone in his lines for KITT, so it would be good for him. I just want Jordan back. A genius, hyper-kinetic, and cute. What else could you ask for as a nerd in the 80's? It would be nice to see what became of everyone in the future, and have them team up to fight Kent. It's a moral imperative.
@Garrison Dean: They grew up. Only this time the son didn't disappear with the Robin Williams AI piloted ship.
Why not just make The Last Flight of the Starfighter's Navigator ??
And why no love for Grig?
The Last Starfighter was a classic early sci-fi film. I look forward to seeing the sequel. There are not enough movies out there anymore that are just for fun, not having to provoke thought about some country or some evil dictator or some director pushing his or her political views down your throat. I hope it comes out straight to DVD. And I hope it is as fun as the first one.
I have to admit, a sequel to Starfighter scares me a lot less than the Justice League movie.
I wonder if we'll get to meet any of the 6000 little Griglings all grown up?
@Git Em SteveDave: and will Val Kilmer reprise his role in this sequel?
@doctor_cos: Exactly! He was the engineer and basically taught him how to use everything else on that ship! Earth-boy couldn't have done it without Griggs!
@moff: Blinded by dual lights of greatness huh? happens to the best of us.
@Git Em SteveDave: Actually.. it was Pee Wee.
@Garrison Dean: I meant it reminded me of Robin Williams.
@CmdrHunt:
Grigg was awesome
I still like how Starfighter hinted at a larger universe out there, and that earth was know, but too primitive to have been contacted by the Federation.
Although they seem really poorly defended, considering one capital ship was enough to scare the pants out of em.
I enjoyed about 85% of The Last Starfighter, but the ending always ruins it for me.
Instead of winning the last fight with skill, or some sort of Ender-Wiggin level genius, he just has to push a flashy red button.
The jolly, candylike button!
I think I just had some kind of stroke, because I sat here for ten minutes thinking I was looking at a still from Enemy Mine, and wondering if there was really anyone who would want to see that again. A sequel to the Last Starfighter makes much more sense...
Awww I hope this happens. I have super warm memories of going to see the last starfighter with a bunch of friends when I was a kid. Mom drove us!
...and D.A.R.Y.L. 2, and Cloak and Dagger 2, and Forbidden Planet 2, and War Games 2, and...
Oh how I loved The Last Starfighter. I even named my Cabbage Patch kid "Alex." How totally 80s is that? I'm totally on board for this sequel and the sequel to Enemy Mine.
I'd like to take this moment to add the word Zandozan to my spell check dictionary.
@Lydia9: rofl! Yeah, that triggered a string of Louis Gossett Jr. images flashing through my brain too; Enemy Mine, Iron Eagle, Iron Eagle II, Iron Eagle III, and that movie where he was a PE teacher... yeah, good times.
"greetings starfighter"-
"greetings programs"-
tee-hee i'm as giddy as giddy the giddy goat on an espesially tall mountainside
"It'll be a slaughter!"
"THAT'S the spirit!"
I <3 Grig!
RE: Real Genius 2.
ONLY if Michelle Meyrink reprises her role as Jordan!
@Lydia9:
Aw, now I want to see Enemy Mine again!
