Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz director Edgar Wright says his new Ant-Man movie will be less overtly comedic than any movie he's ever made, and that he's working on a second draft right now. Despite featuring one of Marvel Comics' goofiest heroes, it'll be a full-on action film with some comedic elements tossed in. But who will be wearing the Ant-Man suit, shrinking to ant-size and communicating with ants? Click through to find out.
Ant-Man has a sort of troubled history, even by superhero standards. The original Ant-Man was Hank Pym, a mentally ill inventor who served in the Avengers and also created the Avengers' worst enemy, the robot Ultron. Then a reformed thief, Scott Lang, took over as Ant-Man in the early 1980s. More recently, a total asswipe named Eric O'Grady stole an Ant-Man suit and dicked his way around through a dozen issues of The Irredeemable Ant-Man.
So which Ant-Man will we see in the movie? Earlier, Wright had hinted that Ant-Man would be both the Hank Pym and the Scott Lang versions, but now he says:
It could be Scott Lang, it could be Hank Pym, it could be both - okay it is both, now there's an exclusive for you.As long as Pym doesn't go schizoid and split into two personalities, we're good with it. [Comic Book Movie]

This has "classic" written all over it.
Whoa whoa whoa.. since when was Hank Pym 'mentally ill'? Yes, he beat his wife, but I would call that 'disturbed' not 'mentally ill'.
I mean, he was a bit of a genius...
From wikipedia (yea, it's my only somewhat-credible source):
"Dr. Hank Pym is a scientific genius of the highest order with expertise in the fields of quantum physics, robotics/cybernetics, artificial intelligence, biochemistry, and even entomology. Notable achievements in robotics include the invention of Ultron and occasional repair of the android Vision. Pym also discovered the self-titled "Pym particles" that enable mass to be shunted or gained from an alternate dimension."
Mentally ill? I think not.
But also, an Ant-Man movie will be awesome. haha
@MikeRapin: Mentally ill != stupid.
The guy set up a crisis so he could look good. He ain't playing with a full deck, although the remaining cards are plenty sharp.
But I agree that it will be awesome.
That picture you used... he looks like a red-suited version of Ambush Bug...! Now THERE'S a movie I like to see! Ambush Bug and Lil' Cheeks!
i loved hot fuzz and shaun of the dead, and now i look forward to ant man. that there are two of them is even better. maybe scott lang is sort of the antagonist early on but then they team up?
Edgar wright is living legend on what he did for 'Spaced' alone.
If you haven't seen the series, find the DVD's and take tomorrow off. I don't think its available on region 1 DVD yet, but trust me, the extra effort is worth it.
Agreed! Space was awesome! Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead too!
I am looking forward to Ant-Man.
@MikeRapin: The recent Avengers Forever series, written by Joe Casey and set during the early years of the Avengers, portrayed Hank Pym as a total loon with multiple personalities and extra crazy sauce.
@TommySez:
However, multiple personalities does equal mentally ill. See the Yellow Jacket years.
Dr. Pym is one messed up guy.
@MikeRapin: Wrong.
@MrJellytree: Where's Mrs?
Spaced is, at long last, scheduled for Region 1 release this July.
Guacamole sprouts atop belgian waffles
@MaxTwice explain.
Ant Man is definitely a screw up, but he's not the kind of screw up that's funny. His inventions tend to wind up being bugged in some critical way, he's always fighting to overcome the shadows of the competent scientists/superheros, he can't keep his marriage together, he's a half-rate superhero at his best (which is why he changes secret identities like other men might change haircuts), and nobody in the Marvel universe seems to like him.
He's that guy with tons of potential who can never seem to do anything well, surrounded by guys who can build an interdimensional portal while half-asleep with a horde of zombies knocking at the door.
Ahh man!! This movie will be great! I based my CoH character The Flea on the idea of his character. Now if I could just remember my account password I might try it again, super-high jumping around the crime filled city streets!
I didn't appreciate Edgar Wright until I watched "Run Fat Boy Run"
It's amazing what the lack of the Wright stuff can do to a movie.
