In what may be a classic case of sour grapes, former Heroes star Leonard Roberts — the formerly intangible DL — feels that the creators of the show have forgotten where it started from, and need to get back to fundamentals. Entirely coincidentally, Roberts also has some ideas about how his character could return from the grave.
Speaking to UK showbiz site Digital Spy, Roberts talked about the upside of the WGA strike:
If anything good can come out of the writers' strike in the US, I think it was an opportunity for the Heroes camp to regroup and get back to the type of storytelling that garnered all these fans across the world and to do right by them. I mean the fans put the show where it is and it's only right that the creative element behind it respects that audience and gives them something that is worthy of their respect. I hope that they've had some time to do that — I think they have — and when everybody gets back to work I have no doubt that it's going to be a stellar season.As to whether DL may show up on the show again in future, he points out that "the nature of our show is that nothing is fully as it seems, so anything is possible," before adding that "I had a bunch of ideas [on how to return] but for some reason [the producers] never really listened to them!"
Admittedly, those ideas centered around renaming the show Zombie DL and the rest of those Heroes, but still... [Digital Spy]

Between this last season being kind of boring and this long break until next fall, I'm actually not missing Heroes that much...
Viva Zombie DL and the rest of those Heroes!
@waytogeaux:
A cogent case for Mr. Roberts' point, methinks...
Nice tags. I kinda liked DL, but he was really a peripheral character that won't be missed.
Oh, gawd no! The Jessica/DL storyline is the worst one on Heroes.
DL was a weak character. However, I thought the way they killed him off was dumb. At least let the guy go out like a real hero.
As for bringing him back? Bad idea.
This show needs costumes...and not just any costumes, I'm talking bat nipples via the classic George Clooney film, BATMAN & ROBIN.
Wasn't he already a zombie when Adam took out the rest of the Initiative? Like he got all incorporated into some greater evil? I KNOW, maybe the Initiative could regroup on Heroes, along with the crew of-- Oh, wait, never mind....
I can understand the sour grapes. I mean, none of the other shitty characters stay dead, so why should he?
I would support his as a zombie, munching on the other characters brains for sustenance.
But Sylar already does that, so there goes that idea.
@waytogeaux: After the finale of Season One I gave up, realised it didn't really know what it wanted to be, and haven't watched an episode since.
Can they bring back DL but kill of Nikki, Micah, and his cousins?
"DL was always kind of sucky"-nice. Heroes had some problems this season, but too little DL wasn't one of them.
How explicitly were his brains spattered? With the desolidification, there's some excuse for "just a flesh wound" after all.
DL dying was satisfying in it's permenance. what's the point of watching a story if nothing that happens actually matters because 'anything is possible?' it's actually rather reassuring that the producers aren't really listening to this tripe.
i never actually saw season 1, only season 2, and i didn't find it all that boring. i found season 2 worth watching for elle alone.
I liked how they nonchalantly just killed DL off. I can't stand shows that keep characters around for no other reason than they think the audience won't be able to handle a major character dying.
I think that actors who want their dead characters resurrected simply can't find any new work.
Why the heck not? Everyone else seems to come back from the dead!
I actually did really, really like DL and the whole Sanders storyline. But that doesn't mean he should come back from the dead.
Unless he really IS a brain-eating zombie, in which case I am wholly for it.
@beelzebuddha: that's not the only possible reason, he could just as easily want to come back to get more time with ali larter.
@SeanOHara: Yeah, b/c if you bring back DL, what's Micah gonna be whiny about? Just bring back DL w/ amnesia, and bring back Ali as my GF, add a whipped cream bikini, and I think everyone will be happy.
Not that I feel it's appropriate to bring race into everything, but I was upset with the fact that the guy who at the time was the only Black hero was the one who had to die. I also didn't like the idea of the intangible guy getting shot. Given his power, there's a much more creative way to die.
I am very much in favor of Zombie DL, though. It would be great. Zombies don't necessarily have to feed on brains. I like zombies who try to return to their normal lives as if nothing happened. Those are fun zombies. Or maybe some by-product of his powers that have him exist only in "phased" or intangible form. That would be fair.
@tetracycloide: Maybe he was upset that his character got offed before he could spend some time with Kristen Bell?
@Gospel X: So a Sean of the Dead-esque zombie? He could even play video games w/ Micah in a shack behind the Las Vegas house. The low humidity would do wonders to hold back the decomp.
He may have died randomly and for no reason but HELL NO they already resurrected Mr. Bennet (Which was awesome BTW) and i suspect they will do the same with Nathan we dont need any more people coming back to life. Plus he didnt play any important role in the series IMO.
@beelzebuddha: I don't mind that they killed DL off, I mind HOW they killed DL off. Let's summarize:
Season 1: DL gets shot in a logical manner, dies appropriately.
Season 2: Turns out he's NOT dead. Yay, Hospitals!
Season 2, Later: DL becomes a hero fireman, using his powers to save those in need! Yay!
Season 2, Still Later: DL, the man who can become insubstantial, faces down a dangerous man in a shady nightclub, then totally fails to use his power to defend himself from being shot. WTF?
Why did they bring DL back (because everyone I know thought he'd died) only to kill him so stupidly. The guy just walks up and shoots him, after they'd just had a tense confrontation in a dangerous nightclub on the bad side of town? They could have killed him in that sequence without making it look so...preventable. Like have him walk PAST DL, then swing around and shoot him in the head from behind. Instead, we see him come at DL full-on from the front...and DL just forgets he can turn into a ghost? WEAK.
@WizarDru: Any chance Kring saw Matrix Revolutions and DL can actually heal himself when he's phased a la the Twins?
One of the more uncomfortable parts of being a TV producer has to be when an actor whose character you've killed off, corners you with ideas for how to bring him back. It's essentially someone begging for their job using their imagination.
"What if Hiro goes back in time and snatches DL just before the bullet hits?"
"Uh...yeah, maybe. We'll get back to you."
"Or he faked his death to protect Nikki. Or...OR...maybe DL has a twin brother!"
"Dude, come on..."
This show had writers?
I really get off on most of the concepts in "heroes" but the dialogue is cringeworthy.
Didn't Sylar ask Suresh something about the " heal anything blood"? I think that's what this next season really needs: A second draft written in heal anything blood.
@WizarDru: I agree 100%. I couldn't have expressed it better myself.
I hated the D.L. storyline, but liked the actor/character. It's Nikki/Jessica that must die.
But she won't.
Because if there's one thing Tim Kring loves to give us way too much of, it's that "Ali Larter looks like she's about to cry. . . again!" face.
@Daveinva: Amen.
As much as I loved it, heroes has always been guilty of under-using most of the best characters in the show. DL isn't first on the list of missed opportunities... but he's up there. Once they introduced this retard-o-premise that claire-blood can bring most anybody with a brain back to life, they may as well use it on the cool ones!
