Finally, Luke Skywalker's Jesus Qualities Are Recognized

You thought you had too much time on your hands, but did you ever spend two weeks making a mosaic version of The Last Supper starring characters from Star Wars, made up from 69,000 stills from the six Star Wars movies? Exactly. See it in more detail under the jump.

As the creator of the image says:

It took me about two weeks of programming my own algorithm, doing a shit ton of touching up, and I even replaced a lot of images myself. It took two weeks of sitting in front of my computer and thinking "why isn't this as good as I want it to be" ...two weeks of my roommate saying "turn off your fucking monitor it's so bright" at 5AM. Worth it though.
For those of you who have wallspace to fully enjoy this masterwork, you can buy it for "around $100" by emailing the artist. [Star Wars Last Supper]

Well, at $100 a pop, I think this guy is definitely going to find that those two weeks were worthwhile.

  • I definitely wouldn't fork over $100 for this.

Now if it were a fresco...

  • @braak: Until he gets the cease-and-desist letter from LucasFilm.

    Pretty cool mosaic though.

  • is it awesome? yes. would it have been slightly cooler using only characters and stills from the original trilogy? I don't want to be the one to say it (but I guess I just did).

    But its def worth $100.

  • That close-up of Luke is freaking me out...

  • While it's a nice mosaic, I'm hesitant to call this guy the artist - especially since he's apparently going to try to make money off the thing without offering any credit to the actual original artist of the painting, Eric Deschamps...

  • I could see paying for something like this. And $100 may not be so bad - after all, do we know how big it is?

    @extracrispy: Oh, yeah.

    Forgot about that.

    Bastard Lucasfilm! SCREW YOU!

  • Nice, but as stated above, he can't sell it at all. If he does, he will get slapped with a lawsuit. I commend his work, but he doesn't need to get himself in trouble by trying to sell it.

  • 100 bucks?! Whats shipping on a mosaic though... Tiles are HEAVY!!!

  • @TheRealFennShysa: Thank you! While I can certainly appreciate the skills involved in "mosaicizing" an image, the guy trying to charge people for this did NOT paint it. Not cool.

  • @girraffesack: I sorta understand why he used all six films...if he didn't there would be a hell of a lot of duplicates which would be lame, Secondly Darth Maul and Mace Windu are there so I guess that justifies it sorta...

  • @extracrispy: lucasfilm would never go on a vindictive witchunt to destroy a product that actually increases the public value of their copyrights. *snark

yeah i couldn't even finish that with a straight face. best of luck to fletcher and his nifty mosaic though.

  • Cool work, but I'm just saying now... that dude needs a girl or some kind of life.

  • @deckard97: when is this tired insult going to die? being dedicated to making something perfect and succeeding sounds pretty satisfying to me.

@tetracycloide: It won't die until someone without a girlfriend or a life comes up with a better one.

  • @sandmanfvr: A lawsuit from who? Lucasfilm, or the guy who actually painted it?

  • Fracking beauty. It's very data rich.

  • What the hell?

You realize he didn't paint this originally right? There was a lot of work that got put into 'mosaic'ing this, but the illustrator who did this (and the client he did it for) might have something strong to say about someone making money off of their work.

IO9, I would suggest taking this down.

Eric Deschamps [www.ericdeschamps.com] did this for Giant Mag. Its not on his website, but I belong to a community where he posts and remember when he posted it. Consider him contacted.

  • To all who commented here:

I'm not selling the poster at all, nor have I sold a single copy yet. Until I obtain the appropriate licenses, this is a personal project.

Thanks to whoever notified Eric Deschamps, I enjoyed speaking with the person who inspired this mosaic for me, and smoothed everything over. I never knew who actually made the original painting so I couldn't credit them, but I have now on my website (right at the top)

Thanks to all for leaving words for me, I'm really too happy that this has become so much better than I could have imagined.

FYI, Sales are HIGHLY unlikely, but if somehow I do manage to get licenses to sell it, it's also very likely it'll be over the top expensive to cover royalties.

    Thanks again!
    Avi

@moff: All worthwhile things are created by people without girlfriends or lives. It's what makes not having a girlfriend worthwhile.

  • @wassermelone: are you kidding? he credits the guy in the first few lines after the link!
    RTFM
The mosaic looks awesome and there is something to be said for the amount of time and effort he put into developing it. I think its an awesome job!

  • @simmo:

Him crediting the artist is NOT permission.

I emailed Eric, and got this reply:

"Hey Thanks Drew. I am trying to talk some sense into him. Crossing my fingers :) Some people have no common sense.

    -Eric"

  • If you knee jerk reaction haters click through to his site, he mentions that it costs him $87 to print. Figure he'll tack shipping on top of this, and he's making a pittance for the work. It strikes me as more of a fan homage than anything else.
$100 for a very original piece of art (regardless of how it's derived) is a pretty good deal. If I liked SW enough and had the wall space, I'd buy it.

  • @simmo: I read it earlier, and that credit wasn't there. Here is a cached version of the page. There is no mention of Eric anywhere.

  • Intellectual property is a tattered sad joke in this brave new world and there's no going back. In my industry I see printed collateral very day rife with art and copy lifted from the magical interweb. To my shame I assist my customers with this -- A logo or illustration here, an excerpt from an article there -- it all adds up.
I sincerely hope the parties involved here can settle this amicably. They are both quite talented and deserve something for their ingenuity and labor.
One wonders what Da Vinci would have made of all this./

  • Separately but related, quotes are not exact -

    Obie vs Darth:
If you strike me down I will become more
powerful than you can possibly imagine. Jesus was struck down, crucified, becomes more powerful than Satan could imagine.

Obie leaves only cloak behind when light sabered by Darth:
Jesus leaves cloak behind when brought back to life by "The Force" after being struck down(crucified). Obie uses force to talk to Luke and appear to him, keep himself from being whisked away too soon. Guides Luke through it all. Jesus stays behind to appear to his disciples after Mary finds only his cloak left behind.
    Guides them through it all.

Both sets of disciples greatest weapon(Star Wars and Bible): Love for each other. (Activates the good side of the force).

Other similarities but the mentioned one caught me by surprise. Not to mention the emperor fooling everyone into not noticing him until it's too late(Anti-Christ).

    My 2 cents. I apologize for off-beat.
