Out of a dozen or so scifi movies coming out this summer, only four of them are absolutely bulletproof, according to you, our readers. Ten of this summer's science fiction films are in danger of falling into obscure-cult-classic territory — or worse. But there's also an excellent chance that at least one underdog will become a smash hit that nobody could have predicted. Which movie do you think will be the most surprising hit of the summer?
Note: You're really kind of voting for two things here. Which of these movies will be the biggest hit, and the most surprising hit? I wouldn't personally be that surprised if Incredible Hulk does well, but I'm including it because many commenters yesterday saw it as having weak buzz. Meanwhile, I would be stunned if Babylon A.D. played to more than a handful of confused Babylon 5 fans, despite the awesome presence of Vin Diesel and Michelle Yeoh.
So what's the biggest sleeper hit of 2008?

How can you go wrong with Monkeys in space?
I still think the upskirt shootout driving scene in Wanted will put it over the top. Plus, James McAvoy! As a superhero! Teh hotness.
@Final: Amen. I'm there. Besides, a "surprise hit" is not a big budget Hollywood film like pretty much everything on that last.
Wanted is virtually under the radar (except to us Internet Geeks) but will make it's money due to the Angalina-Jolie-playing-with-guns angle.
I, I can't vote. Biggest surprise hit? The movie that does better than is expected of it? Or, the move that does better than I expect of it?
If the former, pick a movie that has little buzz that you want to see make it big.
If the latter, ...error... syntax, broken...
X-Files 2 !!!
@Final: My thoughts exactly. Space Chimps gets my vote.
If Starship Dave, The Happening, Wanted, Space Chimps or Babylon A.D. become hits, I'll be most surprised.
Sleeper hit? Love it!
I couldn't decide though. So I voted chimp!
I chose Hancock not because I'm interested in it all that much, it's just that Will Smith happens to be bulletproof at the box office. He's the closest thing to a sure thing in Hollywood.
Ugh, all I could think of was Vin Diesel in another sci-fi movie... Riddick with Michele Yeoh. Lovely. I voted for Hancock. Maybe another comeback hit for Will Smith.
@Macloserboy: Yeah. Everybody loves chimps! So cute and always getting into shenanigans.
Starship Dave sounds tacky enough to win my vote here. Really though, I can't imagine any of these being real hits. Maybe Speedracer.
If it is done well, Journey could be f@#!in awesome
The only thing better than a movie with monkeys is a movie with Nazis. Nazi monkeys would the the ultimate. Well, and nekkid chicks.
I've said it before, I'll say it again, if the Wachowskis manage to keep that Speed Racer rating to a PG rating it could be huge.
Child Audience, Pretty Colors, and heavy toy licensing = big money.
Is that Zooey Deschabel in the center picture? If so, what movie is she in?
@Garrison Dean: actually, there's a lot of talk about them aiming for a G-rated Speed Racer, though they'll need to trim a few things from the test screenings I've heard about.
Anyway, the "money rating" in America is PG-13.
HULK SMASH! HULK WILL BE THE BIGGEST MOVIE, WITH THE STRONGEST RETURNS!
Well, no, I doubt it will be the biggest hit from these movies, but when I saw "biggest smash hit" I couldn't resist.
I voted for Hancock, though I don't know how you can call a summer big budget actioner starring Will Smith a "Surprise Hit."
@spacedcowboy: I saw a half-hour preview of Journey at Wondercon, and thought it was great. I mean, it's nothing more than a fun adventure flick, but that's fine with me.
Boy I hadn't heard a peep about Babylon A.D. A little research later and now I'm pumped for it. Riddick, Yeoh, in an action oriented ripoff of Children of Men from the director of La Haine (and gothika i know), who isn't excited for that!? I mean aside from the general American public, who reading io9 right now isn't excited for it.
I hadn't heard of Hancock before I voted, but it actually sounds cool.
Is this space chimps movies based on the "Captain Simian and the Space Monkeys" cartoon? Because I don't know if I could contain the joy that would result from that.
And aren't we forgetting Wall•E?
[gizmodo.com]
3D movies are great. I love 3D movies.
Just saw the new Wall-E trailer. OMG, Can you say first billion dollar opening day.
@workingonyourinvoice: I don't think anyone expects Wall-E to be a surprise hit. It's just simply going to be a hit.
@workingonyourinvoice:
I loved Capt. Simian. Are you joshing me? I'll go see that.
speed racer.
@workingonyourinvoice: i don't think wall-e will be much of a surprise unless it tanks.
@atrus123: True that.
@reddingofish: I just read the wiki on the show. I will be watching as much CSATSM as I can find on YouTube tonight.
GO SPEED RACER GO SPEED RACER GOOOOOO, ehem ehem, um yeah speed racer
@vadmspartan: Yup. Will Smith's no dummy. He may not make the best movies, but he sure knows how to get people in the door.
Just an FYI: Starship Dave was co-written by MST3K alum Bill Corbett, formerly Crow/Brain Guy. That doesn't mean it won't suck, but it certainly means it deserves a chance.
Someone's actually marketing a movie called Space Chimps?
"Monkeys are like bacon. They improve just about anything."
--Andy Ihnatko
@MonkeyT: Bacon monkeys?
@Git Em SteveDave:
[imdb.com]
The Happening...
and I saw her first.
@tk.:
Bad movie? Add monkeys.
Boring concert? Add monkeys.
Slow day at the office? Add monkeys.
It's a well known scientific principle.
@goldfarb: Damnit, I was at her IMDB page, and didn't see that. And she's mine. SteveDave Deschanel has a certain ring to it.
As much as everyone (readers) bags on it here, I'm going with Speed Racer. Everyone who's not a cynical, color hating, pretentious, adult who is unable to enjoy some pure entertainment is going to be eating that up ie little kids which is money in the bank. Little kids and me....wait...that's not what I meant. WAIT!
X- files FTW
It's hard not to vote for the obligatory monkey but mine goes to Hancock, surprisingly enough. The trailer looks good and it's the first Will Smith movie I've actually wanted to see as far as I can remember.
I picked the last one, because I don't know what it is, so it will be a surprise.
Ed Norton and a promise of destruction? Hulk takes it.
Hancock got my vote. I mean, what is in a name? :p
(Trailer made me laugh...tossing that whale into the sailboat...GOAL!!!)
