It's the remake that the world has been waiting for, by a creative team that the Internet already adores: Attack of The Killer Tomatoes is heading back to theaters, courtesy of the people who bring you Ask A Ninja, Kent Nichols and Douglas Sarine.
The original 1978 movie spawned a franchise of sequels (culminating in Killer Tomatoes Eat France!, which may just be the greatest movie title ever), video games and Saturday morning cartoons. With Nichols' tongue firmly in cheek as he calls the original "the masterwork of a generation," the Hollywood Reporter story on the subject takes the news as seriously as it deserves:

*whew*
and here i was hoping for a branching out into other garden-fresh veggies.
To remake such a pulp classic strikes me as a little seedy and certainly saucy. I'm not even sure the time is ripe; it may be the best to bag this idea for a while longer. Sharper tools than the ninja guys have tried, and failed, to take a clean slice at Tomatoes.
The whole thing gets me a little red in the face, and more than a little cream of tomato soup with cherry tomatoes and sun-dried tomato paste!!!
Here's hoping they can get Clooney back.
How about a Killer Tomatoes/Cloverfield crossover?
That is one evil-looking fruit.
Veggie tales go zombie?
@92BuickLeSabre: Punny!
srsly, really clever.
I'm also thinking Evanescence to cover the original theme song. But only if the Black Eyed Peas aren't available.
"Puberty... puberty love... it's so cool... it's so clean... it's all-american puberty love."
Why not skip this and bring out the Little Shop of Horrors director's cut we've been waiting for????
How many more of my childhood memories can they ruin?
Well, at least I have the ones I made up.
@Plague: Sorry, I read in Variety this morning that they've been optioned and are set to start filming in 2009 as the Will Smith Blockbuster vehicle for Summer 2011.
Unfortunately, early word is that they're going to end up being "mainstreamed" and "made coherent," and that the end result simply won't be very good.
But will they film it here in San Diego again? Can I get a cameo along with the 10,000 other extras that appeared in the first one in a scene at Qualcomm (then Jack Murphy) stadium?
"well sir, i have good news, and i have bad news. the good news is, this tomato is dead. the bad news is: its a cherry tomato!"
@92BuickLeSabre:
Oh. sigh...
Uh, do I get points?!
@Plague: Only the memory of imaginary points. Sorry, that's how it works.
@92BuickLeSabre: Well, you beet me to it, but let's see if I can ketchup...
This is puree speculation, but a remake of "Killer Tomatoes" might be a little too acidic to digest. A remake of a cult classic like this seems a little fruity. I mean, after all, they would have a lot at (beef)steak here.
What a bunch of Fruits!
Well shit, life's worth living again.
