Is Peter Weller close to gainful employment again? That's what people are asking, after noticing the mention of a familiar film franchise on a recent MGM press release, suggesting that a new Robocop movie may be in the works, years after the failure of Robocop 3 (and the little-remembered TV show).
Announcing Mary Parent as MGM's new Worldwide Motion Picture Group Chairperson, a press release for the company ended with a list of franchises they're currently working on:
With the appointment of Parent, MGM will enter its new phase of evolution by focusing on its major movie franchises highlighted by JAMES BOND and PINK PANTHER sequels, THE HOBBIT, THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR 2, THE OUTER LIMITS, ROBOCOP, DEATH WISH and FAME, among others.
Ignoring the idea that someone thought that it wasn't enough to resurrect Fame and that it really needed franchise attention, it was the mention of the previously unknown Robocop project that got tongues wagging. It may have missed the window of anything-goes-to-keep-America-safe topicality, but in a market full of blockbuster remakes and nostalgia, it was only a matter of time before this came back. I can only hope that they're going to base it on the Alpha Commando era...

I would love to see what they could do with ROBOCOP now. And being young when ROBOCOP 3 came out I didn't really mind that the story or acting was bad. It was awesome just to see a guy shooting people in a metal body, plus the other machines it was just fun. So bring it on MGM.
Weller looked like Hell on 24. Bummed me out because I realized another Buckaroo Banzai would never be made.
As far as Robocop goes, he still looks fine to play a reanimated corpse.
I don't have any recollection of a Robocop 3. Are you sure it really existed?
I'd like to see Woody Allen as Robocop. Or the young Robin Williams.
Let me guess, Robocop, disenchanted with the world and runs off to hide somewhere, only to be once again called to duty to sa...I needn't go on, srsly. Robocop 4? Hollywood needs to send its writers to some other continent to take lessons in writing orignal scripts.
Heh, it doesn't matter what Peter Weller looks like. He can be made young again via CG. Provide the voice and it's a done deal.
Yeah he looked a little worse for wear on 24, however he still has the voice and I would guess putting another actor in the suit with prosthetics to mimic Weller's chin/mouth can't be too difficult.
I think Peter Weller already has a respectable job. Isn't he a history professor at Dartmouth, or something?
OMG, what if they're working on a Robocop/Fame crossover?
A new Robocop would be nice in a cheesy way, I guess.
But as far as cyborgs go, he's pretty much bottom of the barrel.
@B: that's your subconscious mercifully repressing traumatic memories. You should be thanking your wise, wise brain chemicals for that.
I don't see Weller putting on the Cop-suit again. It supposedly hurt like hell when he was twenty years younger, though a twenty-years older RoboCop intrigues me.
I loved the TV show when it was on, wish I could find the episodes these days. Had the kind of twisted near future that also made TekWar interesting.
No, that's not sarcasm.
@braak:
I believe he's a professor at Syracuse. I remember seeing him narrate the "Engineering an Empire" series for the History Channel and doing a double-take when I realized it was Robocop. Who knew there there were actually actors with serious academia chops? To this day, I remember more about Carthage from Peter Weller than I do from 5 years of history at UCLA...yes, 5. Don't judge me! It was a confusing time in my life.
As long as Verhoeven directs, I'm good with it.
Would rather have a new Buckaroo Bonzai.
@braak: I used to see Peter Weller almost every time I would get breakfast at this one place in LA (Lulus for the stalkers) And every time I had to refrain from making cracks I was so giddy.
"Bacon... dead or alive your coming with me."
"Hey Buckaroo would you buy that breakfast for a dollar?"
If they want a sequel to anything... Buckaroo Banzai would be perfect.
@Rus McLaughlin: ...and I think you stubled on what would be a decent premise for a 4th movie. What's it like to be a crime-fighting cyborg for 20 years? How do you keep from putting a bullet in your head (like one of the earlier models did) for so long? Do they have to change out dying organs?
Oh yeah and lots of death and explosions.
Hi, Hollywood. Why don't you work on creating NEW franchises?
Much like Robocop himself, bad things happen when you try to reanimate the dead. Death Wish? Fame? Thomas Crown Affair? These don't need sequels.
Stop. Just stop.
Come on. We ALL know that the new Robo won't have Weller in it, nor will Verhoeven direct.
I'm sure it will be made by some hack whose credit is a 2nd unit gopher for the Texas Chainsaw remake or something.
@Chiper: The only thing I remember from the series was RoboCop using spikes shot from his legs/feet to anchor himself to the concrete.
@Citizen Kang: Yeah, Engineering and Empire, I think that's what I saw.
I'll bet his classes are packed.
I like Robo and onward with that, but I'd much much rather see another stab at Howard the Duck than Fame...
@Garrison Dean: But then we might miss out on the Buckaroo Banzai TV series they've been attempting and abandoning for ten years now.
I remember hearing that Earl Mac Rauch and/or W.D. Richter had script together... don't recall if it was a pilot or a screenplay. Rauch did do a comic book sequel, though.
And let us not forget the cartoon and accompanying toys...
My favorite Weller moment: after returning from a trip to Italy 3 years ago, I was watching a History Channel special on Roman architecture (I think) and one of the talking heads was Weller!! I had to look it up to be sure, but I guess when his acting career hit the skids he got his PH D in something related to ancient studies and was working for Syracuse Univ in Florence (again, I think).
Robo Cop talking coherently and intellectually about the aqueduct system in ancient Rome - jarring to say the least.
This will not be a sequel, it'll be a remake like Batman Begins, and they'll pick an up-and-coming director to inject a new look and feel with an all new cast. They'll start from scratch, stick loosely to the original plot, and "get it right this time". I only pray that the police cars are still Tauruses (Taurii?).
The Future of Law Enforcement is back! Woot? ughh. Another re-imagined idea? Here's a lame idea but possible Hollywood selling point; perhaps this Robocop will have "nano tech" and his hard external armor is actually made of nanites that can change into any shape or form!
@ElijahDProphet: I hear ya on that. Weller on 24 just made me feel bad for the guy... he will always be remembered as Robocop.
Robocop 3 was written by Frank Miller.
And an OUTER LIMITS movie?! What's up with that?!
@extracrispy: Robocop just wants to DANCE!
@Maliboo00:
So was #2.
Then both were ruined by someone else. As Frank will tell you about IN DEPTH if you ask him.
I loved the TV series, great fun, better than movies 2 & 3. The fake news and commercials were good stuff.
I bought the TV series on DVD recently, and while lots of stuff is cheesy and cheap, I *really* enjoy all the anti-corporate stuff that I didn't really notice watching it as a kid.
Yeah, I liked the TV show, very snarky, it and the Max Headroom series would be a good anti-corporate snarkfest. Plus it had more Roddy Piper!
@Maliboo00: No kidding. How do you make an 'Outer Limits' movie? Please don't tell me they're using that horrid Twilight Zone movie as a template...
Hey MGM, how about some originality??
Robocop should have stayed dead with Orion... It killed the Studio so having failed it's retainer should fall on its sword and stay there... forever.
I'm all for an Outer Limits movie though if they can find the right writers for it. I loved Creep Show, the Twilight Zone Movie and a couple of the Amazing Stories movies. If they can get the rights to some of Neil Gaiman's short stories or a few other RELEVANT authors then I'd be all for it.
Am I the only one that noticed Thomas Crown Affair 2? How do you make a sequel to that? Why would you think it would sell? How much Pierce Brosnan nudity does the world need? WHY DO I SPEAK ONLY IN QUESTIONS?
@ggodo: Pierce Brosnan nudity... Who wants that? Let me introduce you to my mother, and everyone she knows.
@Garrison Dean: Hrm. Your mother knows you, ergo...
Robocop 3 ? Excellent screenplay by Frank Miller horribly butchered by the studio who wanted it rated more like PG-13 and less like the X for violence that the bloodbath that Frank wrote would have resulted in. There was a really good movie there. Just figure that everytime a hail of bullets directed at their feet stops a gang in their tracks, the gang is actually wiped out completely. And flying Robocop, we didn't need that, the toy sales needed that.
"So what's it like being a rocket scientist ?"
I liked Peter Weller in Odyssey 5. First scene features some beautiful space shots-then the earth blows up.
They probably saw the Iron Man Trailer and were like "Hey, we can cash in on a similiar idea!"
There was a time when Movies were called art, nowadays it's just a Money Making Business...
The TV show awesome, by the way.
@B: me either, must have been memorable
Lets see.. a remake of DUNE..for the third time..and now ROBOCRAP..eeer COP...sighh the beat goes on...
@Citizen Kang:
Geezer Alert:
When I think back to all the crap I learned in high school,
It's a wonder I learned anything at all.
