Joss Whedon's dance movie may never get to first position, but he's got something much, much better on the way: A serialized online musical, starring Nathan Fillion from Firefly as a musical superhero. Captain Tightpants sings! Click through for details.
Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog will be a series of three 10-minute webisodes about "a low-rent super-villain, the hero who keeps beating him up, and the cute girl from the laundromat he's too shy to talk to," Joss revealed on Whedonesque, his fansite. Neil Patrick Harris will play Dr. Horrible, Nathan Fillion will play Captain Hammer, and Felicia Day will play Penny. Plus "a cast of dozens!"
Joss wrote Dr. Horrible during the writers' strike, with the help of his brothers Jed and Zack, plus Jed's fiancee Maurissa. Even though Joss is now busy prepping Dollhouse (his amnesiac agent show starring Eliza Dushku) with a May start date, and he has many comic book scripts due, he's somehow managed to start shooting on Dr. Horrible as well. No word on when we'll actually get to sing along with Dr. Horrible. But is it terribly wrong that I'm already anticipating this cyber-musical as much as Dollhouse, or maybe even a bit more? "But is it terribly wrong that I'm already anticipating this cyber-musical as much as Dollhouse, or maybe even a bit more?"
Nope. I'm right there with you.
@CMG's Evil Twin: Add me to the "psyched" list. I love Whedon! I love Nathan Fillion! I love musicals! I love villians!
@CMG's Evil Twin: Yeah, no. I think you're right on that one. Campy musicals about emo sub-villains trump amnesiac chicks anyway.
@taxbaby: (This sounds sarcastic, but I swear it's not. Damnit, how do I turn this thing off?!)
I got three words for you:
Neil
Patrick
Harris
Win
Only Joss could make me happy to see the words "singalong" and "webisode" in the same item. Well, Joss and Stephen Malkmus.
don't get me wrong, i love eliza dushku, but neil patrick harris and nathan fillion trump her.
Shoot, I was hoping Fillion was playing the villain. Of course, if his role on Buffy is any guide, he's too convincing/scary as a villain to be "funny."
@Brock: Yeah, I thought for a moment he was playing the villain too. In fact, I think I mistakenly said so in my intro. I just fixed it. Now I'm sad. Although this will still rule the cosmos!
I've been waiting impatiently for this ever since "Once More, with Feeling" -- I just didn't know it. But the most important question is exactly how tight Fillion's pants will be, or whether he'll be in superhero spandex.
This sound hysterical. If it has that"follow the bouncing ball" for the singalong...oh my Grodd -- Charlie, please post the link to this as soon as you can.
No doubt the script will contain seemingly irrelevant, throwaway remarks for Captain Tightpants - which get removed in post-production. Similar, irrelevant dialogue turns up for one particular actress in Mr Whedon's dance spectacular, and for certain other actors in widely separated, non-Whedon television productions.
In the dead of night, this unused footage is quietly collected, collated and re-edited over the coming years, until BEHOLD! a new, hitherto unseen episode of Firefly is constructed from the void.
Cool. Stuff to look forward to.
I read an interview with NPH on AintItCool where he mentions doing this with Whedon, but he didn't mention Fillion being involved. Its like a dream come true.
I am more psyched over this than I am over dollhouse. Mal vs Doogie Houser for the win!
@TheyCallMeLibrarianHot: It seems like Neil Patrick Harris also came out as a Star Trek nerd in the same interview. How does he keep getting more and more awesome?
I love my captain.
totally count me in.
joss whedon... nathan fillion... super heroes/villians... musical... can this get any better??? i can't wait to see this!
I can't really say anything in this post without the fear of flying off into a massive rant, but I just want to say that I'm anticipating this project (and indeed anything by Joss Whedon) with bated breath.
I just want to give props to Felicia Day (of the web series "The Guild"). She must have made quite an impression on Joss back when she was a Potential Slayer in Season 7. And she must really be something, because going up against Nathan Fillion and NPH without being overshadowed seems like a hell of a feat.
There is Nathan Fillon, and that is all that shall be said. It could be a cheesy movie about hive-minded zombifying brain slugs and it would still be great.
@CargoCult: I'd be happy to consturct a new "Firefly" episode from anything you can get!
Neil.Patrick.Harris. Full Stop.
"Dollhouse" I probably won't watch even if it's right in front of me on the free TV.
THIS, I shall seek out, and watch and rewatch, and cackle, and sing along.
NF + NPH = awesome.
I have never been more interested in any project ever.
OMG this will be awesome, I was psyched for Dollhouse, but THIS will be worth losing sleep over.
I am a longtime fan of Buffy and Angel, and thought Serenity was fantastic. However, I am beginning to think Joss is squandering his talents on b.s. like this. Write movies, Joss. Write teleplays. It is hard for me to get excited about a "cyber-musical" when you could be working on something more exciting...like a Buffy movie maybe. Re-cast everybody if you have to, but let's get moving before no one cares anymore. I like Whedon a lot, but it appears he thinks any thing he does his drones will eat it up (and, looking at these posts he may be right.) Looking forward to Dollhouse, however.
