A gritty detective show that spans three different alternate universes is finally coming to the Sci Fi Channel in the U.S. Charlie Jade starts with a murder whose victim has no identity whatsoever, which is unthinkable in the dystopian, corporate-dominated world where Charlie Jade lives. And then in the course of the murder investigation, Charlie uncovers a corporate plot to steal natural resources from an alternate universe — and then he falls through a wormhole into a universe much like ours. The South African/Canadian co-production looks, from the clips I've seen, much gritter and more complex than anything else on Sci Fi... except for Battlestar Galactica, of course. [Slice Of Sci Fi]
Here are a couple more clips, from Youtube:

Will this actually be on, or is this going to be something they make you watch online? It sounds interesting which makes me think they'll keep anyone from seeing it.
Wow - dare I say it??? This show looks fabulous.
That said - I liked the Dresden Files too - and it didn't last.
Any idea when this will actually air?
It's all online already. I plan on checking it out tonight.
Turns out it's been airing for 3 years.
Interesting premise.
But it's the Sci Fi channel- do we DARE hope it's good?!
OK, Charlie Jade.... I came across this show in my local video store (here in Japan) after I had run out of anything else to rent, bittorrent or buy and in desperation picked it up based solely by the graphics on the box cover. I didn't really have high hopes for it. And the first few episodes into it I still wasn't really sure.
In some ways it's a completely derivative mishmash of a bunch of references, Blade Runner being the big one, right down to one of the main characters looking a lot like Gaf(?), Edward James Olmos's character and a voice over narration. But that's mostly just style points...
It took a while for me to get into it, but damn, it really got it's hooks into me. It's a really, really strange show, with lot's of open questions and some really bizarre casting choices. Plus it's shot mostly in Capetown, South Africa which is probably the first time any sci-fi series has been set in Africa. I can't really explain why I liked this show so much. It can be really slow, kinda morose at points and none of the main characters are particularly likable. But DAMN... I can't get it out of my head. I keep hoping they'll be a season 2, but this thing was made several years ago (by a Canadian production company I think) and has been slowly making it's way across the ponds.
I think some folks will like it and I think an equal number will vehemently hate it. But for me, it was a surprise gem.
Sweet, I never got around to watching the last few episodes. This is sort of a slow-burn show, like that Total Recall series that was on Showtime. CJ isn't the best show in the world, but there were a lot of little things in the show I liked, especially the baddy, named 01 (pronounced oh-one). I think I'll buy a kid and name him that.
You know what, if Sci-Fi is going to get off their duff and show some decent shows that were made outside of the U.S. anyway, they should show ReGenesis too.
@bitgod: ReGenesis is in local syndication, so Sci-Fi wouldn't want/get it.
@saketini99: If this fight sceen is any indication, I'm feeling sorry for the broken toilet at this point. The lead is very attractive, which never hurts. Greg Egan set at least one story in South Africa...Distress.
So much sci-fi is derivitive to the point where I just openly admit I steal all my ideas from everyone and everything. I haven't read an original idea in years. New and exciting stories, but no new ideas.
I'm amazed at all the amazing SF programming that has been running for 4 years or more outside the U.S. that I'm only just now hearing about, like ReGenesis and now Charlie Jade!
I think this is the very first thing I've ever seen filmed in South Africa, and the difference was apparent right from the architecture of Charlie's apartment.
wow, it's South African?? i'm that shocked I haven't seen it
I put it to all of you that current day Africa is the most cyberpunk place on earth. Just think about it. Corrupt governments, faceless multinational corporations, violence at the drop of a hat and a jarring, tragic mixture of the ancient and the ultra modern. The future hasn't arrived more unevenly anywhere else.
Besides have you heard the pop music pouring out of Africa in the last 25 years? Doesn't get more futuristic and gritty than that!
@bitgod: "This is sort of a slow-burn show, like that Total Recall series that was on Showtime."
Ah, Total Recall 2070. I can imagine a lot of people were turned off by the cheesiness and desperate Blade-Runner-wannabe vibe of the first episode and never watched it again, thereby missing out on what somehow became a very different, interesting, and good series. I really wish that had managed to get a second season.
Yeah, that was the funny thing, the show was more Blade Runner than Total Recall.
Evil: Ah yeah, now that you mention it, I guess I recall seeing it on one of the local stations one weekend.
I downloaded this show about six months ago off the "torrents" and ate it up like crack feed straight into my eye. The show is very simple starting cause they give the story information slowly but make each of the characters very through the twist and turns. I hope sci-fi airs the whole thing.
Side note: part 1, Regenesis is a great show but I don't think its sci-fi.
Side note: part 2, The lead actor Jeffrey Pierce was recently on an episode of "Eli Stone."
@1ofsixbillion: Regenesis isn't sci-fi to begin with, but wait until the end of season two.
Comment on Transdimensional Murder Mystery, Coming Soon You can say what you want, but it's the best tv series ever made. I've seen Charlie Jade two years ago, and it's just awesome. Intelligent, extraordinary and truly intriguing. This is something new, unique and cutting-edge, milestone of the new millenium. I've never seen a science-fiction TV show like it before... And i guarantee that you, never seen anything so hip, intelligent, engrossing and beautifully executed. Forget about BSG, this is the show of the new millenium, just a Veritable Masterpiece ! DontLK
Oops... meant to say season three. That's when it gets all SF-y.
