As a side note for DJ Shadow fans, this is one of the several movies he samples dialog from. You'll know it when you hear it.

reminds me of 'Strange Days'...

This movie is fairly cringe-inducing, with lots of bad dialogue and over the top performances.
So hammy at points you could spread mustard on it. A decent idea that was badly executed.

Oh, and here I was wondering where the Friday sf-sex post was! I wouldn't share my sex memories unless I wanted people to scream. Or laugh. Or fall asleep.

@Charlie Jane Anders: I'd take it out. The film kind of hinges on how far they take that machine in its recording abilities. Its still enjoyable, but cooler when you realize what is on that one tape. If more people had seen this I'd just say spoiler, but since almost no one I know has, and everyone I show it to loves it I figure why ruin it.

@Plague: Gotta agree to disagree with you on this one friendo. Aside from the inexplicable robot factory comedy scene this is a pretty bang on film for me. Plus.. its got Walken.

This is a classic case of a good movie killed by television. Trumbull messes with the audio and picture ratio in the screen version, so that the recorded scenes actually appear more realistic than the life scenes. This is all lost when it got panned and scanned for tv.

It's no wonder Trumbull left movies to start making immersive rides.

I really love this film. If you have not seen it, please do.
Without spoiling it, suffice it to say, the premise takes you as far as you can go.

Also, it's Natalie Wood's final film.

@Zantor: Taking things as far as they can go is in my mind the duty of any sci-fi creator. Such a cool flick.

If I remember correctly, Trumbull's original vision was to have the "recorded memory playback" scenes displayed at 60 frames per second - much faster than TV or standard film - which supposedly would give the viewer a strangely "realer" feel, without it being easy to identify why that was.

Also, , doesn't some guy get found dead later in the movie, after clipping the orgasm scene with that blonde and creating an endless loop out of it?

My [best]friend was talking something similar about this today. He said that it would be cool if they made a machine that would capture all of ur dreams(not just sexual ones) and then play them back later. He said he could only remember like a scene from his dream.

Never saw this movie, but I've seen this concept done much better in the film Strange Days. Come to think of it, Strange Days. Anyone remember that?

What about Wim Wender's "Until the end of the world"? That was a really interesting take on the recording of dreams concept. The characters at one point are practically addicted to watching replays of their dreams.

@foolish-rain:Neither catatonic nor dead, as I recall. But good for nothing else, afterwords - Twitching and 'addicted to love'. About as close to wirehead status as any portrayal I've seen.

Comment on Share Your Sex Memories With All Your Coworkers Yep, the guy sets up a loop of an orgasm and just plays it over and over again - after the experience he's totally useless having stimulated his brain chemistry that little bit too much, wirehead indeed. This is a lost classic of sci-fi cinema - has an almost Proustian feeling for memory, the closest modern film would be Eternal Sunshine. The ending is not given away above - i've included it below but, if you haven't seen it i suggest you don't read on and buy a copy of the film pronto ;) MASSIVE SPOILER The end of the film is the logical end of the story - one of the main scientists involved in making the recorder has a heart attack and dies, recording the experience e.g. making a recording of death and beyond. The tape is 'classified' but after a chase scene Walken eventually experiences the tape she made himself, cue transcendent, spielbergian climax about the afterlife etc.
