Massive Half-Life 2 Drydock Needs Defense and Some Paint

This is a drydock in HullBreach, a complete conversion for the Half-Life 2 video game. The team has an ambitious goal of creating 100% new content for the game, and they've been hard at work on it for several years. The game is set 2,000 years in our future, and involves a bloody world war that threatens to engulf the planet. So the upshot is, even 2,000 years from now, we won't be getting along.

According to the developers, the game is "realism-based. So no swooshy laser weapons or impossible Star Trek/Star Wars science. We're keeping it gritty, intense and war-like. So it's a bit like Halo, if we'd never gone to war with the Covenant and instead just started fighting with each other. You can check out more concept art, see the futuristic weapon designs, and even listen to the theme song they've composed for the game at their MySpace page. They have over 20 people working on this thing (supposedly), and it's almost been three years since they began working on it, so hopefully we'll start seeing more soon.

  • That's quite beautiful in its decrepitness.

  • You mean to tell me that they won't allow for a laser weapon in 2000 years? Really? Humanity mustn't be trying very hard in their world.

  • @Garrison Dean: We've been busy destroying all the scientific research centers and military production facilities. No, wait, that's Battletech.

  • Have any of these ever made it to a mostly-finished state? All I can think of is Gunman and Day of Defeat, and they had some studio support.

  • Yeah, this doesn't look very good. I mean the art is nice, but the game looks sloppy for 5 years worth of development time.
And what does "Half-Life 2 total conversion" mean, exactly? Is it set in the Half-Life universe, or just using Valve's (Havoc) engine? I think "mod" is the word they're looking for.

The fact that all they have is a myspace page also isn't a good sign.

In any case, good luck to the developers of the game. Maybe I'm wrong and this will be as big as CS.

  • Kinda looks like GorkaMorka! Which makes it a bit cool no matter what it is.

  • @Seth L: There are a ton of mods out there for almost any well published engine, the thing is that lots of them don't make it out of obscurity. And a lot of them I'm sure bite off more than they can chew.

  • Ahh I have been following Hullbreach for ages, its gone through a lot of changes over the years.

I still one day pray for the game with huge starship boarding battles, star fighters tearing around outside, huge docking ships laser cutting through the hull whilst bombers try to detach them with their concussion bombs, huge mecha stride around the hull picking off small shock troops like flies.

Repair bots teeter around pressurising and locking down lost sections of the ship, two races fighting for each others craft, their only survival in a cold and harsh solar system, salvage crews scamper amidst the chaos reclaiming everything from man to machine. Pirates of the cosmos.

Just the sound and suspense of waiting in a pressurised chamber staring at the molten metal being cut away before you. Knowing that masses of troops will come pouring forth, relentless and fearless from nano fed drugs. The hammer of bodies hitting upon the hull a daunting countdown to the battle ahead.

Hmmm that is the game I dream to play.

  • The problem I have with the majority of these mods is they just end up being deathmatch with a different set of weapons and character models. The change of settings can be refreshing and entertaining for a brief time but very rarely is it that there any significant enough gameplay innovations to hold my interest. The Dystopia mod for HL2 managed to innovate enough on the gameplay front to keep my attention for a time, but I've now long since moved on.

  • Nice artwork.

  • @Garrison Dean: All the laser weapons were destroyed in the Second Coming of Christ in 2443.
