In what can only be some kind of Machiavellian move to distract protesting fans from protesting about Fanboys, producer Bob Weinstein has announced a remake of 1986 nutty robot comedy Short Circuit, to be written by the people who came up with the original movie.
Calling the remake "a worthy addition to [Dimension Films'] family film slate" (which includes such family favorites as Grindhouse, Hallowe'en and something called Who's Your Caddy?, proving once and for all that Bob and brother Harvey clearly come from a particularly odd family), the remake will update the technology but otherwise maintain the mechanical hippie themes of the original, according to producer David Foster.
Hopefully, the inevitable future success of the remake - because, really, who could resist that cute ET-schtick-stealing military robot and his hilarious peacenik antics? - will be a harbinger of remakes of other 1980s SF movies starring Steve Guttenberg. I for one have been eagerly awaiting a new version of Cocoon for years.
'Short Circuit's' Johnny 5 still alive [Variety]

I can assure you Steve Guttenberg isn't doing anything and would be down since he got screwed out of the sequel...
#5 is ali!...All right. Actually kid, #5 is really tired, and would like a nap. Can you keep it down please? ...and get the hell off my lawn! (little bastards...pain in my pentium...)
Wall-E
Have all the new ideas died out?
@Belabras: Why go looking for new ones, when we've got all these old one just sitting right here!
Well its a good thing that its made by the original producers, but it is rather obvious that they got the idea from Wall-e.
Maybe they can tie this into the Bill and Ted remake and kill two childhood memories with one stone.
I can see it now: Two stoners and their all CGI anti-military robot travel back in time in their converted VW Bus to...
Um..
SAN DIMAS HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ROCKS!
Is it April Fools WEEK here at io9? Because this and the Bill and Ted story have got to be some kind of unfunny prank.
@BlindKarma: Neither is Ally Sheedy. Hell, even El Debarge to do the remake song!
For the love of all that is good, stop the remakes.
A commenter a while back said the Weinstein's were in it for the quality and not to make money.
All I have to say is:
THIS.
As it happened so it shall happen again...
Another remake, and another of my favorite child hood movies to. I hope this doesn't suck.
This is but a harbinger. When they start remaking Pauly Shore movies...THAT will be the true sign of the apocalypse.
@radio1: If he can stay out of jail long enough...
I think Fisher Stevens is probably free as well. Even though him doing an Indian character isn't very PC anymore.
@KiddChaos: Those who don't remember the past... will buy tickets to the remakes.
@BlindKarma: Amen to that. The Guttenberg, the better. It's the only way the remake is going to have any street cred. Let's get Ali Sheedy on board too.
If you haven't seen these Short Circuit remakes, you have to watch them. HILARIOUS!!!

Wow, cashing in on the Wall-E attention?
I regret existing long enough to see this happen.
Los Lobos needs to kick the Wienstein's ass.
uhm, hey you hollywood ASSHOLES: the writers strike is over. you do NOT have to waste my summer-blockbuster seasons remaking GARBAGE. you can actaully hire humans to make NEW MOVIES that are AWESOME.
BURN HOLLYWOOD BURN
@Belabras: Long ago, my friend. Long ago.
I'm surprised they can do this, given that Johnny 5 is so obviously the final cylon.
@Plague:
Are you serious? I can't believe someone would say such a thing. The Weinstein brothers are HORRIBLE HORRIBLE people. They chop the shit out of films that get imported here into the US, and they always say that the cuts will help the American audiences understand the film better or some heaping load of bullshit like that.
Down with the Weinsteins.
I'd like some new robot movies please. (Then we can talk about how they will never be as awesome as Johnny Five).
@dead_red_eyes:
Neither can I.
But they exist. I'm serious!
@Belabras: Short Circuit is just a retelling of Frankenstein with a happy ending. Classic stories never die, they're repurposed.
@dead_red_eyes: Who else is even willing to bring foreign films to the U.S. on a steady basis? Yes, I don't like dubbing or edits of great foreign films but at least someone is willing to do it at all.
I have a question.
Who's Johnny?
Moar laserz?
@Tim Faulkner:
I have no idea who else would do it. It's the only thing that I actually like about the Weinsteins, but I hate it that they chop up movies that they have no right chopping up. It's not their film/vision.
