Explore the Vast Capitol Wasteland of 2277 in Fallout 3

This concept art for Fallout 3, which we mentioned once before, shows Washington D.C. reduced to ashen rubble. The highly-anticipated sequel to the classic "wander the wasteland and have sex with mutant hookers" RPG is slated for a Fall 2008 multi-platform release. The story is not directly related to the one from Fallout 2, but it takes place in the same world. In 2077, nuclear war destroys most of America, forcing the survivors to hide out in underground vaults that protect them from radiation, mutants and other bad stuff. More art below.

No game play footage has been released, though the official site has a cool teaser trailer. Developer Bethesda has revealed that "America's First Choice in Post Nuclear Simulation" will take place in first or third-person POV and features a huge explorable world along with the series' trademark character creation and advancement system. When you leave your home vault to find your missing father, you'll face moral choices in addition to the pausable real-time combat system. Should you negotiate with those raiders, or just shoot them? Should you pimp your wife out for cash, or earn it yourself? Tough call.

  • If you look carefully, you can see Peter Ustinov and his cats.

  • Please, PLEASE let this game include an accurate and dilapidated DC Metro rail system.

    Looks amazing! Can't wait!

    @Ma1agate:
    Accurate...you mean sans a "Georgetown" station? Also keep in mind that by 2277 they still haven't extended the orange line..

  • I'm not a gamer but these images and the phrase "wander the wasteland and have sex with mutant hookers" make these the perfect illustrations for Gene Wolfe's short story "Seven American Nights".

  • @Ma1agate: The official site does include this phrase: "From the barren Wasteland, to the danger-filled offices and metro tunnels of DC..."

  • Isn't Washington, D.C. currently a vast wasteland or have I missed something?

  • i keep trying to tell people d.c. is already frequented by mutant human hybrids but they insist on calling them 'new yorkers.' they try and reassure me that they're only interested in watching the cherry trees blossom but i'm sure they're here to eat my brains and stand on the left side of the escalators.

  • @Miranda Kali: It's always baffled me, no metro to GT, no metro to Adams Morgan, no metro to GMU. But, the game is set way in the future, maybe they can ad a Magenta line to fix it.

    That and I'd really love to see some power armor in Hoya blue and Mason green & gold.

  • @Ed Grabianowski: Sweet! As long as there are orange wedge turnstiles, I'll be happy.

    @Miranda Kali: Heh. As long as I can detect an appropriately stale and post-apocalyptic air of pretentiousness in G-town, I'll consider it an accurate depiction.

  • @Miranda Kali: No Mason stop, no GT stop, no Adams Morgan stop. Maybe they can add a Magenta line and have gangs of the remaining college students battle for control. I'd love to see power armor in Hoya blue and Mason green & gold.

  • @Ed Grabianowski: Sweet! As long as there are orange wedge turnstiles, I'll be happy.

    @Miranda Kali: Heh, as long as I can detect an appropriately stale and post-apocalyptic air of pretentiousness in Georgetown, I'll consider it an accurate depiction.

    I wonder where this "barren Wasteland" will be. Are they talking NoVa, or Bethesda itself, where they call home?

    Also, I think I'm the only person that loved Fallout: Tactics. Yeah, I said it. Buggy as all hell, but fun, particularly in multiplayer. Of course, that was before Bethesda bought the rights to the Fallout IP.

  • @Ma1agate:
    No, you're not. I enjoyed the hell out of Fallout: Tactics.

  • I cannot wait. Fallout 1 and 2 are two of my favorite games. @Ma1agate: I also like Fallout Tactics. Sure, it wasn't a roleplaying game - but I found it to be a fairly faithful continuation of the Fallout world - just emphasizing a different aspect of it. It was buggy as hell though.

  • @sensenet: Well, I found out the hard way not to profess my love for FO:T in hardcore Fallout circles.

    I'll admit I'm not the most well-versed person in terms of Fallout lore, but after reading up on it I discovered just how far off the beaten path of the IP Tactics went.

    The ability to choose between real-time or turn-based was awesome, though.

    If I understand correctly, Fallout 3 is going to play something like Oblivion. I've spent very little time with the Morrowind property, but based on what I've heard of Oblivion, this is cause both to rejoice and worry over various aspects of gameplay.

    That said, I can't wait either.

    @Ma1agate:
    They should totally have a zombified Rob Lowe shambling around M street, grunting the lyrics to "Man in Motion" (from St. Elmo's Fire).

  • Well, if fallout 3 is anything close to fallout 1 & 2, I can count on loosing a good few days this fall of 2008.

  • @Miranda Kali: Before my time, sorry. I do loves me some Rob Lowe, though.

  • I haven't played the previous Fallout games, so I haven't been paying very much attention to this one. But now I'm very interested. Those are some sexy concept images.

  • It was recently revealed by Bethesda that Fallout 3 will have over 200 different endings. This was covered on Kotaku (another of the Gawker blogs) somewhere. Branching determinism to that extreme is almost scary.

    @Ma1agate:
    There will be a lot of similarities to Oblivion from what we've seen, but Bethesda has done a very good job of convincing people that it will absolutely not be "Oblivion with guns". From what I've seen in articles, they are integrating the aimed shot system and something like SPECIAL for character development, if not directly reusing the SPECIAL system. Further more, they've intimated that FO3 will be maybe half the geographic size of Oblivion (which is fine because Oblivion was monsterous), but will have a higher saturation of active content.

  • By the way, the narrator during the teaser trailer is Ron Perlman, who was the narrator for the intro movies for both FO1 and FO2. He was also Hellboy.

  • @eakolb: War. War never changes.

  • Fallout 3 is going to be awesome.

  • I can't wait for this one.

  • Looks pretty cool...

    Hopefully the current publisher isn't as lame as Interplay who forgot to submit the proper credits on 1/2 of the games they made...

    Which meant that if it was the 2nd game in the franchise that they would just copy the credits from the 1st game onto the game 2, even if 1/2 the people working on it were different.

    I lost credits of several games from Interplay that way... Fallout 2 being one of those.

  • @Illuminatus: There's a simple reason there's no Metro station in Georgetown -- the people who live there don't want it. They're afraid it'd allow riff-raff with no cars to come in and ruin their beautiful neighborhood.

    Adams Morgan is sufficiently served by surrounding stations, and the Orange Line would have to turn at a right angle to get out to Mason, which is close enough to be serviced by buses. It'd make more sense to extend the line out towards Manassas and Gainesville, where the newest suburban developments are.

  • @tetracycloide: I'd argue with that New Yorkers joke, but I really do want to eat your brains and stand on the left sides of escalators. Well, mostly the brain-eating.

  • @Ghede: i knew it!

  • @SeanOHara: The reason there is no G-town line is because the neighborhood doesn't want the *construction* that it'd require-- plus, all that underground digging could damage one of the highest concentration of historic buildings in the city.

    As for extension of the Orange Line, the Silver Line will split off from West Falls Church towards Dulles, via Tysons Corner and Reston. Figure the Orange line will eventually head out to Centerville/Chantilly and Manassass.

  • If Dallout Three is as good as Oblivion( and from what i've red..it probably will be better). This is a game i willbe looking forward to playing for a while...That is
    after i finish Mass Effect...
