What is it with Pixar and its cutsey-poo apocalypse movies? In a big announcement yesterday about upcoming Pixar offerings, the studio discussed Newt, the wacky little "mad about you" tale of how the last two blue-footed newts on the planet don't get along — but will have to breed to reboot their species. The two are brought together by scientists hoping to save the nearly-extinct newts, and lovable goofiness ensues.
Apparently the world is ready for a zany romantic comedy about extinction and forced breeding. Newt will directed by newcomer Gary Rydstrom, whose short Lifted (pictured here) is a slapstick take on an alien who needs to learn the basics of abduction. This fun extinction flick will come just a few years after Wall-E, another cute-apocalypse tale of a wuvable bot who lives smack-dab in the middle of a decaying, abandoned planet Earth. ...and Coming Soon: "The World Without Us: A Musical."
As long as it doesn't go from cute penguin movie to "don't overfish the arctic circle" I'm cool.
I see no problem with apocalyptic romantic zaniness.
@Plague: You're just in it for the forced breeding.
Forced breeding in a kids movie? Good luck with that!
@Annalee Newitz:
Don't bring my personal life into the discussion!
I'm beginning to think there will be no forced mating at all.
I just don't see the humor in the extinction of any species, much less breeding in a kids movie. This is gonna suck hard.
@Garrison Dean: Hehe, I see what you did there. ;)
I'm going to want my cut of the gross take for this.

Nah, that was A Boy & His Dog , and it happened 30 years ago...

Yeah, and i used to think a Pixar movie about a rat cooking in a French restaurant had to be the "worst idea ever."
I'm optimistic that, if anyone can plant the seed of conservationism in the hearts of a generation of kids, Pixar can.
@extracrispy: shhhhh ;)
@extracrispy: "Well, Johnny, once the female is secured to the breeding stand, we bring in a Tiger Salamander as a teaser stallion..."

i believe 28 days later covered the whole extinction - rape storyline already...
@comp_wiz101: "Bad news everyone!"
@hiro_protagonist: And the kids loved it!
@Klebert L. Hall: Between the "milking " machine and the implied cannabalism, I doubt Pixar would touch it.
Great campy movie tho'!
@hiro_protagonist: J, is that you, I believe the boys at Kotaku are still looking for you.
