Can an animated reboot make sense of Kurt Wimmer's Ultraviolet, two years later? Wimmer's visually stunning vampire-plague movie, set in a future dystopia where everything is always color-coordinated, became a confusing mess at least partly due to studio interference. And now acclaimed anime director Osamu Dezaki (Aim For The Ace!, Lupin III) is supervising an adaptation, called Ultraviolet: Code 044. It premieres on the Animax satellite channel in Japan on July 1. No word on when it hits the U.S., but here's a teaser trailer, which shows a much moodier, less candy-colored version of the saga. Interesting! Definetly gonna have to pick this up. Thanks for the heads up, Charlie. :)
"...a confusing mess at least partly due to studio interference."
...the other part being a talentless writer/director.
Is it just me, or did that trailer try to give anyone else epilepsy?
@Log1c: someone needs to smack the projector
OK, I am supahpsyched about this one. Anime should be the perfect framework for what was actually a good backstory. (Small caveat: no skimpily-attired Milla saps some of the win from this venture.)
I never saw the original. Is it worth watching? Maybe with the sound off?
From what I'd read, it was a half decent movie that had like 45 minutes edited out by the studio, making the plot seem completely random, rushed, and barely watchable (which it is).
I kinda saw some potential in the movie, but it really did need more time and more... something.
It still burns to think about this movie,
Kurt Wimmer did Equilibrium and I did like that movie for the most part. But this movie was just god awful, I don't think adding anything will save this movie.
In the end, watching this film was like being gang raped by a group of mediocre CGI artists with a crayon fetish. Please GOD no more.
@Miranda Kali: Visually, it's a bit interesting. It has some stunning scenes. It's watchable, except for a few horrible fight scenes.
If you managed to watch AvP Requiem and Hitman without gagging, it could be worth seeing once.
The trailer gave away way too much. What's the point of watching it now?
Ugh why even waste our time with that? At least the original had bright colors, this looks like a desaturated mess. What did Janusz Kaminski throw up on it? Its called Ultraviolet, not Sortapurple.
Someone get me some crutches, this is gonna be lame.
If there's a director's cut of UV that makes it a better movie, point me at it. I really like bits and pieces of it, and it's a good sort of movie to have playing in the background at a party, because it's quite pretty.
@Lars: Hitman had so much potential, too, and it squandered it all away. I blame, in no small part, the soundtrack. If they had kept it operatic, like the awesome trailer, they could have at least set themselves apart from the standard action fare.
@tk.: very good points about Hitman.. Awful film... But. The unrated version did have a lot of titties.
Well, that was... uh... boring?
@Plague: Dude! She's wearing skintight pants and walking along with a huge samurai sword. Plus, it's a teaser trailer...
@Charlie Jane Anders: yeah, animate skintight pants. I'd rather watch milla in real skintight pants with a real sword.
The thing that made UV unique is that it's a live-action anime without the anime. The original IS a beautiful looking movie, and bless the hearts of everyone who said so. The plot and dialogue may be stupid but that's because it's a stupid comic book plot; it's just there as a vehicle for the action and visuals. I'd much rather watch Mila with her polychromatic-changing hair and costume than some cartoony version. The whole point of the movie was to make it look like an anime and then some.
@medeasin: I think the problem that I have with saying that the movie is visually stunning is that complementing the movie in any way seems to detract from the vehemence that you need in order to express exactly how incomprehensibly stupid it was.
Yes, yes yes! If there's anything I thought when I saw this movie, it was that "this would be ten times cooler if it were an anime."
I mean really. Flaming swords? Come ON that's so suited to animation it's not funny! In live action it just came off kind of hokey. Mila Jovovich couldn't save that flick, although she was its only high point. XD
@Macloserboy: Yeah, if anyone is under the impression that he has a 'vision' should watch Equilibrium with commentary. I realized that everything I disliked about the film he was 1000% into and everything I liked about it was followed by a "see, this was the original idea, but we didn't have the budget for that" or "see this was supposed to do this, but it didn't work out".
@BullfightsOnAcid: I see what you did there.
@braak: agreed. I saw the movie and thought to myself, "this would be awesome if I had my iPod and was blasting some really kick-ass music." The entire film makes for a better generic action trailer than it does an actual movie.
if milla jovovich voices the english dubbing, i'm sold.
