You can never get enough dinosaurs in space, and that's why indie filmmaker Larry Arpin spent the last several years filming his dinotastic space opera Galactic Raiders in the deepest California desert. The whole flick is done old-school, from the Ray Harryhausen-style, stop-motion dinos, to the retro Mitchell camera he filmed with. And the plot is pure pulp. Rymir zooms to a distant planet (full of dinos, whom he fights in this clip) to rescue his girlfriend from the evil Acastus.
Arpin follows in the tradition of the great Arch Hall, Sr., director of caveman drive-in flick Eegah! by casting his son in the film. Though Arpin's kid doesn't get the starring role like Arch Hall, Jr. In fact, Arpin says of son Joseph:
To my surprise and delight, he did a great job and memorized his lines quickly and efficiently.Wow, thanks dad. Might want to stick to stop-motion dinosaur fights and stay away from the "compliments" department for a while.
My point is: It's dinosaurs — in space! And I want it now — on DVD!

I like how he shoots the dino 6+ times and then says "I don't want to hurt you." Riiiight....
@B: No dinosaurs were hurt in the making of this movie.
well its because he had it set on "stun"... lol so it wouldn't really hurt it.... lol
dinosaurs-- in space!
i watched this with the sound off and listened to the Cro-Mags ("Face the Facts") and it was surprisingly in synch-- kind of like the wizard of Oz thing, but with less floyd and more Cro-Mags. killa.
@Annalee Newitz: I guess I'll be canceling my PETD protest, then.
There was a movie in the 70's/80's that looked just like this.
All I remember is a guy shooting a laser at a triceratops, then getting impaled.
It may have been filmed in the same gravel pit.
You're probably thinking of Planet of the Dinosaurs, a late drive-in entry with some decent stop-motion dinos and terrible acting.

Could've been the same pit.
I have better looking dino bathtub toys than that thing.
However, the dino was more realistic in the acting dept.

Not so much the deep desert, but beautiful Vasquez Rocks, about 45 minutes north of downtown LA on a good day. Not far, good day trip-- come and visit us!
@gods-n-clods: But it sounded so much better to say "deep desert"
Sounds like the guy who did the music for Tomo has been moonlighting on this dinosaur epic.
@Annalee Newitz: True, it's a little "deep" and far for the average LA driver... come and visit, there's alot of nature-lovin' in the "High Desert"...
@gods-n-clods: And there are dinosaurs, right? RIGHT???
I think my favorite part is when the dino stops to look at the guy like "what the heck?" and the guy keeps tracking across the screen and saying "keep going".
@Annalee Newitz: We gotta Gwangi, does that count? There must be some sauropods around...
