At last, the X-Files movie that's coming out in July has a title. It will be called X-Files: I Want to Believe, a reference to the poster Agent Mulder had hanging in his office during most of the series. Director Chris Carter told Yahoo News, "It's a natural title. It's a story that involves the difficulties in mediating faith and science. `I Want to Believe.' It really does suggest Mulder's struggle with his faith." This puts an end the weirdest episode in summer movie history, in which a flick slated to come out within months still lacked a freakin title despite the fact that it was in full-bore publicity mode. X-Files: I Want To Believe....this will be good?
This would appear to answer several recent discussions here: why aren't there more science vs faith discussions in sci-fi and can we have more unintellectual sci-fi rather than CGI blow ups?
Yes to both! And all in one movie!
I Want to Believe...that this movie won't suck, but I can't.
When Carter kept going on about how the movie was about religion and God at Wonder-Con, I had low hopes. My hopes continue to lower.
Even though it was on Mulder's poster, blah blah, its still kind of a dumb title for a movie.
Wellll, as far as the title danceroo, can you say "Cloverfield"?
re: Lowered hopes of quality
I've embraced the fact that, baring total suckitude, I will see this movie in theatres regardless of how good or bad it is supposed to be.
Total Suckitude = Ishtar for these purposes.
I want to believe...that I still care about the X-Files so I'll just go on pretending.
@Belabras: maybe the "ishtar" could be ths SI unit of measurement for sucky movies: "This film has been rated at .47 ishtars."
For fucks sake people, it's the poster!Hello?The famous poster?That's been on the wall for every fucking episode in the series?The iconic poster that....never mind.If you don't get it you don't get it.It's the perfect movie title.In fact, I don't see how it could have been anything else.I think this will be one of the best movies of the summer.It's definitely one of the best scripts around and is a hell of a lot more interesting than anything else coming out this summer.
So many easy jokes.
I'm disappointed in you people.
Gillian "My god she's so hot" Anderson.
I want to believe...that someone could have come up with a better title.
I want to believe...that Gillian Anderson with be my birthday present this year.
I want to believe...that someday Hollywood will stop sucking.
I lost all fondness for Gillian Anderson after she killed and ate Russell Baker, then changed the name of the show to Masterpiece.
Plus she sounds like she's on Quaaludes during her monologues.
@Calraigh: I just...don't have the words.
@diverguy: She is. I was never into her when the show was in its regular run, but over the last year, my involuntary responses are all up in her business.
@moff:
The fact that she used to be punk, and eats bugs make her all the more alluring. (to me, at least)
It is the perfect title.
And both of them are still pretty.
@Ma1agate: Well, why don't you bother your arse rustling up a few, then I might bother mine replying to you again.
I can't wait for this film to come out.However I'd watch the 2 of them sit in a room full of slowly drying paint over any of the dreck that's going to inevitably be forced on us over the summer, so what the fuck would I know. I DO know I'd rather stick hot needles in my eyes than sit through an overlong film about a 60something archaeologist character trying to recapture his youth by appearing in scenes with Shia The Beef.With intermittent, geriatric sex scenes and below-par CGI.
@Evil Tortie's Mom:
@Miranda Kali:
@moff:
Have you seen her in the new Maxim shoot?Maxim, I know but....She has to be an alien.Nobody can look that hot and not spontaneously combust...
It sounds better than "Fight the Future". That was just awful. Like the movie.
On the other hand, everything I've read about XF2 seems like it's going to be AWESOME, no matter how silly the title is. I can't wait to see it.
@Seth L: As was her right, having defeated Baker as he defeated Cooke, in single combat on the shore of Lake Nemi. There can be only one.
@spacepenguin: I though the very same thing when I saw it but I Netflixed it recently and watched it again and I have to say, it stands up. There's so much more they could have done with it but maybe the strangest thing about it is that it hasn't dated. At all.And I totally forgot about the whole ice scene at the end and the giant spaceship and of course, the nearly kiss in the hall...
*Sigh*
I want to believe...that I still give a stony rat's ass about the X-Files. But I don't.
@Calraigh:
Is this a new shoot? I have an autographed photo of her (yes the goddess herself signed it in front of me) wearing black lingerie, arms crossed, and kneeling on a bed. This would have been just before the show stopped filming in Vancouver. I thought those photos came out of Maxim magazine.
@Calraigh: LINK???
@moff: Never mind:
[community.livejournal.com]
Or just: [www.google.com]
@moff: You have truly performed a pubic service today, sir.
" It's a story that involves the difficulties in mediating faith and science. "
Damnit, I knew Carter would bring religion back into this. It's what fucked the entire series up for me. I think all the blatant religious crap started happening in season 6 didn't it?
@Calraigh: I liked the escape-from-Antartica scene, and even the near-kiss, but I felt that the rest of FTF could have done a lot more, just like you said. It was as if they were so fascinated by Shiny! Big Screen! Big Budget! that they neglected the script big time. I felt like there were great scenes interspersed with lots of really boring ones, and I felt really disspointed at the time. But I haven't seen it in a long time, so I just may have to give it another try.
It better live up...
@Rasselas:
Set, spike!
@moff: Hey, sorry you got there first.Amazing no?!!
@diverguy: Yeah brand new, it's the May edition.Just google her and you'll have it.Actually, sorry, Moff just linked it.Pretty goddamn amazing....
@spacepenguin: Yeah, I loved the show so much it just felt like an extra long episode really, rather than a cinematic endeavor in it's own right.But I was pleasantly surprised.I also found out that they actually shot it between the 3rd and 4th seasons and before the 4th season aired.I think people forget how constrained they were in shooting the whole series.A lot of the time they had to just shoot a finale every season cos they didn't know if it was going to be picked up again.That happened with the last 2 seasons and they had to make do with what they had.
I used to have a little version of the "I Want To Believe" poster in my locker in middle school.
::hangs head in shame::
Dang! Mulder looks really butchered. @_@
"I Want To Believe" that the title sprouted out of some 5 year old kid.
