You know that every time you read spoilers online, Steven Spielberg feels sad that you're ruining the movie-watching experience. And yet, here you are. You're determined to discover secrets of Spielberg's own Indiana Jones IV, read early reviews of Iron Man, see tantalizing pics of X-Files 2, and learn the secrets of The Happening. Because you hate movies. You also hate TV, as evidenced by your willingness to read what's next on Lost and watch a clip from the next Doctor Who. You're Spielberg's worst nightmare: a spoiler junkie with a hose in your vein.
Iron Man:
That metal thingy in the middle of Tony Stark's chest? It doesn't just keep his heart beating, it actually replaces his heart, claims one guy who's seen the movie. And part of Tony's transformation when he returns home from his harrowing captivity in Afghanistan is that he starts seeing more in Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) than just a lowly assistant.
Tony decides to stop making weapons, but his mentor Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges) disagrees and cuts Tony out of all decision-making at his own company. So Tony puts on his Iron Man suit and flies back to Afghanistan to destroy all the weapons he made. Also, the film is too long and sluggish, especially the first half. [Moviehole]
Indiana Jones:
Indiana Jones IV is about "greed, abduction, the Cold War, anticommunist fervor, torture, theft, artifact-acquisition rivalry, and the post-WWII generation gap," says Entertainment Weekly. The warriors you meet in the South American jungle are called the Ugha, and there are "large, nasty ants." Shia LaBoeuf plays a "muscled up" Marlon Brando-style punk-rebel named Mutt Williams. The Russians are seeking that Crystal Skull because of its "reputed mind-controlling powers." There were aliens in earlier drafts of the movie's script, but nobody's saying whether they're still in there. Oh, and Indiana Jones doesn't die in this movie.
X-Files: I Want To Believe:
Here are two new X-Files stills that just came out. [Slashfilm]
The Happening:
The "villlain" in The Happening, to some extent, stays unseen, says director M. Night Shyamalan. It's a "very scary thing that can permeate the entire movie — even when you walk out of the theatre." [Entertainment Weekly again]
Doctor Who:
Here's a completely random Doctor Who rumor: Donna will die at the end of the season, and Rose will stay with the Doctor, appearing in all the 2009 specials. [Soapchat]
And here's a clip from this Saturday's episode. Digital Spy have also done their ever-annoying thing of releasing some real, and some fake, spoilers for the episode. Off the top of my head, I'm guessing it's true that the Ood should be holding something organic instead of those translation globes they're all stuck with, and there's a silly song that markets the Ood as servants. [Planet Gallifrey]
Lost:
The Lost producers held a teleconference yesterday, and spilled some info about upcoming episodes. Don't expect to see Penny any time soon, because actress Sonya Walger is busy with her HBO show, but we will see more of Penny/Desmond at some point. The fate of Danielle and Karl will be decided in the next episode, and they were shot with actual bullets. We'll get more of Danielle's backstory, even if she really is dead.
As for the Jack/Kate/Sawyer triangle, producer Damon Lindelof says:
All we can say is that Sawyer is not one of the Oceanic Six, and Jack and Kate are. Obviously there will be a huge focus in the finale in terms of how that series of events transpires and what ultimately happens to Sawyer, and it's all on the axis of the love triangle. We think that both fans of Sawyer and Kate — otherwise known as the 'Skaters,' I am told — and Jack and Kate, the 'Jaters,' will have a bounty of interesting romance scenes. We'll also revisit the Jack/Juliet relationship in episode 10.
They had no comment about whether we'll be seeing Claire after this season, but added that she'll have some "compelling events" in the next batch of episodes. We'll also see more of Jeff Fahey in upcoming episodes, and more than we might expect to see of Alan Dale.
Orchid will play a big role in the season finale. And huge, "seismic" events will befall all the characters before the season's end. Some characters' fates will be clear — but not all.
We'll see more of that wacky four-toed statue, and it will be explained before the show ends. We'll also see more of the smoke monster and of Jacob. The end of the show will be an end, and won't be open-ended in any way. They've already written the final scene of Lost, and everything is leading up to it. [Spoilers Lost]

"Shia LaBoeuf plays a "muscled up" Marlon Brando-style punk-rebel named Mutt Williams."
wow-- sounds great!
and we get to meet a spunky pack of street urchins who help Indy out with his "research" by cutting up and making pratfalls while embodying outdated representations of other cultures and talking in a goofy kind of broken English!
FAIL
I love that the final scene is already written in LOST.
...and does "Indy and His Post-War Nostalgia" count as scifi just b/c it has Lucas/Spielberk at the helm? i guess the phantom presence of aliens counts. i've been trying to avoid these genre wars but there's nothing even vaguely SF about any of those films-- if anything, they consistently debunk rationality and speculation in favor of Angels, Judeo-Christian magic, and some kind of white anixiety about "voodoo" and aboriginal demonism. i do love Raiders so very much, but this thing smells like it has THE LUCAS'S sweaty hands all over it.
Aw, Stefen Speelburg haz a sad?
Can he haz a cheezburger?
Apparently Mr. Speilberg didn't like to peek at his Christmas presents early.
[thinks about previous statement]
I like to read how the story ends firts, so sue me, Steve
Every time you read a spoiler, Steven Spielberg kills a kitten, please.. think of the kittens.
@DSTRYA: I've been curious why people are referring to the latest Indy as "sci-fi instead of fantasy" as well. Just including aliens somewhere (as background or not) != sci-fi in my book. Though, truth be told, I'd consider the Indy movies to be "adventure" genre movies, like The Mummy or King's Solomon's Mines more than anything anyway.
@What is a man?: There was an article in EW.com with Spielberg and Lucas and they said that Indy is a supernatural movie that they just hung on action-adventure titles so it would sell.
The "villlain" in The Happening, to some extent, stays unseen
I can immediately think of three people who will hate that. I am not one of them, but not showing the enemy is hard to pull off.
Donna dies? Seems reasonable, unless Tate wants to do more Who.
@DSTRYA: Mutt? We named the dog "Mutt"!
I loved that dog.
And thank you IO9 for answering my "What's that there glowy thing in Robert Downey Jr's chest?" question.
I LOVE the smell of spoilers in the morning!
re: Donna's death. Anyone who's read my review of her Xmas special or even listened to me babble before the season started will be surprised: I'd be sorry to see Donna die.
Once again, I've been lulled into a grudging respect for a narsty character by rock-solid acting. I confess I'd seen little of Tate and I don't always agree with her comedy choices.
In the last episode, I feel she's proven she can be subtle and capable of producing a 3-dimensional character. She's showing the vulnerable (and smart) side of Donna.
@Log1c: Sure, the story underpinnings are supernatural, but the meat of the series has always felt adventure-like to me. Just my take. :) I admit I'm not versed in what a genre is truly defined by though (i.e. plot versus presentation).
I'm sorry, am I the only one who, being a comics geek, missread the headline for this week as: "Discover What Makes Tony Stark a Dick in Iron Man"? Just me?
Am I the only person who liked Donna from the get-go? I'd be really sad to see her go, I think she's a nice change of pace as far as companions go for the new series. Granted, we've had all of three and a half (Astrid sort of counts!), but still.
I'm betting the villain in The Happening is Bruce Willis, who's already dead and is just trying to burry a nuke in the heart of the Earth in order to save his ex from a building... in space.
woa, "large, nasty ants?" I swear to god, if Indy fights a giant, CGI ant, I'm gonna freak out.
Am I the only one who thinks that the second X-files looks like a shot from Evolution? Gillian Anderson looks a lot like Juliana Moore in it.
@What is a man?: According to a very long interview with Lucas that I read several months ago, it makes sense.
The inspiration for Raiders, and by extension the two sequels, was, as you probably know, the matinée serials of the thirties. Lucas and Spielberg consciously emulated those films and that whole "genre" (one of the reasons I accept Temple, because it really reminds me of a lot of that crap - some of which is public domain that you can download for free at the Internet Archives ([www.archive.org]).
With Indy 4 being set in the 50's, they decided it would be wrong to extend that emulation into a decade where that genre was completely dead, and instead chose to emulate the pop-cultural film trend of the 50's - (I can't think of anything other to call them than) B-movies. A lot of these had decidedly Sci-fi-ish bents, so I guess it's reasonable to consider Crystal Skull sci-fi if it's true.
(I should add that so far I have seen no traces of anything remotely sci-fi in the promo material, but then again, I'm not really fussed if it's sci-fi or not, as long as it's Indy).
@Jim (The Canuck One): With all the other spoilers regarding Donna's character development and Rose and Martha, it seems like a very believable rumour (the one about Rose being in all four specials not so much). I can't wait to them to really get into Donnas character arch!
@TheKeyMaster: I doubt it, but if yes, I'll race you to the ticket stand for a refund.
However, if he fights giant animatronic ants, I'm all there!
@DSTRYA: We argued about whether to cover Indiana Jones on this blog, actually... but all the hints that there are aliens this time aroudn, and the Area 51 stuff, and the action figures that included alien-looking critters... it just seemed like instead of magic this time he's facing extra-terrestrial.
Is it wrong that I want Rose to return to Doctor Who *just* because she's eye candy?
That being said, I actually like Donna....
If I'd known spoilers make Stephen Spielberg cry, I'd have read a lot more.
The only good movies that guy makes are war movies.
-Kle.
@Swarlanis: No Swarlanis, No it isn't.
Ultimate Lost spoiler, the last 4 minutes of the series!
So Spielberg feels sad about me reading spoilers...tell you what Steven, you take the walkie-talkies out of ET, and I'll stop.
@DSTRYA:
sounds like your referring to Pynchon's Against the Day, the worst piece of shit i've ever had the misfortune of almost finishing.
@jbq: Ah... gotcha. Thanks for catching me up. Didn't realize they were going for a different feel. And I agree, call it whatever... as long as it's Indy, I'm on board. :)
