X-Files 2 Plot Revealed!

The new X-Files movie will tackle themes of religion, weird experiments, and things that make you go eww. The back-cover blurb for the movie's novelization went online and finally explained just why the movie is called I Want To Believe. Not to mention clearing up all of those little clues, like the picture of Mulder and Scully in a church, and Billy Connolly leading the feds through the snow in the trailer. Click through for spoilers.

Here's the blurb for the movie novelization, which is written by Max Allen Collins (creator of Miss Tree, the greatest comic book character ever):

When a group of women are abducted in the wintry hills of rural Virginia, the only clues to their disappearance are the grotesque human remains that begin to turn up in snow banks along the highway. With officials desperate for any lead, a disgraced priest's questionable "visions" send local police on a wild goose chase and straight to a bizarre secret medical experiment that may or may not be connected to the women's disappearance. It's a case right out of The X-Files. But the FBI closed down its investigations into the paranormal years ago. And the best team for the job is ex-agents Fox Mulder and Dr. Dana Scully, who have no desire to revisit their dark past. Still, the truth of these horrific crimes is out there somewhere...and it will take Mulder and Scully to find it!
I like the idea that the X-Files team has been broken up. I want to see a whole sequence of David Duchovny traveling around telling people, "I'm getting the band back together." [X-Files News]

  • Marry me Gillian Anderson. She gets more beautiful as she gets older somehow.
    Love this clip:

  • Oh please please say that Mulder and Scully will have not seen each other in the intervening years. A reunion will be SO much more interesting than if they've just spent the last six years chilling with the baby and being all normal.

Also, is the world still ending in 2012? Or are we just gonna ignore that part? Cuz I'd be totally cool with that.

  • Sounds medical-ly, So I'm banking on Scully trying to get the band back together.
What are the odds Mulder says "Woman, leave me the hell alone!" when she shows up at his house?

  • Let the pre-judging begin!

  • @Lizzie24601: The world is, in fact, still ending in 2012.

I'm, frankly, still a bit pissed that it didn't end on Aug. 29, 1997 as promised in Terminator 2. If it had, I would have died just a day before turning 26.

So young. So bright. So full of promise and glory.

Now I've gotta wait until I'm 40 (or 41)to go. Dammit.

Wow.This sounds brilliant!I really like the premise- in fact-it sounds like a brilliant X-Files episode and that's exactly what we want.If it's possible I'm even more excited about it then I was..But is it REALLY the plot???Until I hear it from Chris Carter's mouth I'm not entirely convinced.

@PVIII: Check out the new photoshoot she did for Maxim. Unbelievable.

  • It does sound X-Files-worthy, I have to admit.

  • Also, Gillian Anderson is teh hotness.

  • Image of Calraigh Calraigh at 12:47 PM on 04/18/08 *

@jbq: David looks hot too though, I've always loved him! This film just can't come quick enough in my opinion.

  • @Calraigh: I was a bit disappointed with Californication, but thought he was excellent in it. It was great to see him in something non-sci-fi for a change (gasp!), but I, too, am eager for this here flick!

  • Image of Calraigh Calraigh at 01:11 PM on 04/18/08 *

@jbq: Yeah,He'll always be Mulder to me, unfortunately for him!I found Californication really annoying at first-it's really L.A speaky and everybody's too smart for their own good.Thank Christ for the ex-wife narrative though, I think that's the only thing that really saves the piece for me.Otherwise I think I'd really want to take an AK-47 to everyone involved.Bart Freundlich has a lot to answer for in my opinion and it's all bad.Trust the Man anyone?
Anyway, he's great and I love him.Sooo it's all moot really.I think I'm coming down with the vapours though because of all this X-Files news. It's just actually, really, bona fide, exciting news.No film has made me excited in...I honestly can't remember.I don't know if that says more about me or the industry but hey.Fuck it.I may buy rental space in a cinema when this film comes out.I'm setting up a fund right now so I can bring all the friends I force to go with me.
    Yay x a million squillion......!!

  • I am unabashedly fan-girl SQUEE about this.

Even if it sucks, I don't care, b/c it's Mulder and Scully together again.

    So pretty.

  • @Calraigh: Hehe, Natascha McElhone is great! I'm a big fan of Billy Connolly as well, so it will be interesting to see what he's bringing to this movie (his choice of roles sometimes leave a lot to be desired, but all in all he has some pretty great cameos in his career).

@Evil Tortie's Mom: I know, they literally can do no wrong in mine eyes.Ok I really have to stop talking about this or I might explode...Oh god I'm so excited..

  • Good to see some Scully loving on here.

  • Image of Calraigh Calraigh at 04:12 PM on 04/18/08 *

    @CmdrHunt: But the question is-Do we want Mulder/Scully lov-in'?

  • @Calraigh: Well, DUH!

  • I'll say it again ... sucks that Chris is bringing religion back into the X-files. It's what killed the show for me.

  • Image of Calraigh Calraigh at 07:02 PM on 04/18/08 *

@dead_red_eyes: If you read between the lines man it's not about religion. Here's a link to Carter's words on the subject himself:
    [moviesblog.mtv.com]

  • @dead_red_eyes: I think religion is too big a part of Scully's character to be ignored. The show has pretty much treated it as yet another occult phenomena.

  • Image of Calraigh Calraigh at 07:32 PM on 04/18/08 *

Exactly. It's not so much religion that Carter is interested in though as it is spirituality and that is in itself, paranormal. The connotations organised religion evoke are what give spirituality a bad name.It is in fact a fairly spooky concept, when you think about it.Personally I think Scully's character has some larger significance in the whole X-File narrative and I think Carter has been dying to explore and finally explain it.Maybe not but I just have a hunch that she's a dark horse of some sort..

  • Image of Calraigh Calraigh at 07:34 PM on 04/18/08 *

@Evil Tortie's Mom: Yeah, what was I thinking?!Mulder and Scully are the new Bogart and Bacall if you ask me...

  • Wait, so they've set it in the future, but they're apparently ignoring the whole apocalypse-is-imminent cliffhanger the series ended with? Is this an alternate timeline?

Somebody link me to something that will explain this.

  • @jcormier: Shh, don't complain. Let's all just pretend the last few seasons didn't happen. I'm happy to give CC a free pass on that.

Err, CC would be Chris Carter. Oh god, I'm lapsing back into the old acronyms. Well, this old noromo started out as a DIFS and so can probably handle some movie-based MSR, even if UST is more fun. (and, let's not forget, MASHEO)

  • CC...well, who knows. You know, I was never a huge X-Files fan, but I *loved* the first two seasons of Millenium...

So...both were on Fox, and given that Fox has a well deserved reputation for Firefly-ing...er, I mean screwing up...interesting shows, I will conveniently lay the blame at their feet and NOT Chris Carter's for the latter year's decline of both series.

But I'm not 100% sure. It may be that Mr. Carter doesn't know how to end a story, and keeps spinning them out into more and more complicated yarns that eventually fall apart.

I probably won't see the film, but if this forum raves about it I might. Iron Man looks great, Speed Racer a maybe. That pretty much covers the summer for me.

  • Image of Calraigh Calraigh at 07:50 AM on 04/19/08 *

Speed Racer looks like crap.I'm sorry but it will be the flop of the summer.Iron Man doesn't interest me in the slightest and I hate Gwyneth Paltrow. She alone turns me off projects that may previously have held some interest for me.It's X-Files for me and that's it-they're the best written characters in over a decade and that's final.Cannot wait.....
