Actress Amy Acker, who appeared as the nerdy Fred in Joss Whedon's vampire-detective show Angel, will join Whedon again in his latest TV show, the futuristic Dollhouse. Acker will play Dr. Claire Saunders, who takes care of the amnesiac "dolls" who can be programmed for any mission or assignment by clients who hire them in the new series which launches this fall.
Joss also held the first "table read" for Dollhouse, and gushed:
All in all, pound for pound, soup to nuts, man vs. beast, it's a pretty amazing ensemble. I'm not sure how I landed this troupe, but rest assured I'm gonna write bestest good word for talkacting to them yes! They're in good hands.But of course he would say that, wouldn't he? [E! Sure, I love me my Joss, but sometimes he is pretty damn hard to take. That quote was a tough read.
I guess it's nice to have Amy Acker involved here, but part of me keeps thinking it would be even nicer to seem some new faces.
With the way american television goes, I am starting to think new blood isn't a good thing. Look at the bbc, they pretty much use the same actors over and over, and they consistently make good shows. They do allow for new comers, but for the most part, they use veteran actors. I for one am getting tired of shows being cancelled in America because the audience doesn't know the cast.
@danwaterhouse:
yes and yes.
It would seem that Grant Morrison isn't the only creative talent featured today that's wacked out on drugs.
"They're in good hands...and Wow! Have you ever looked at your hands? I mean REALLY looked at 'em? They're all fingery with pore-like things!"
I'm shocked that Amy Acker didn't get a steady acting job since Angel. She was good on Alias as "Peyton" but by then the writers for that show had already sucked. Drive could have been interesting but we all know Fox's maniacal need to cancel interesting shows. Hopefully, this one will last longer and Amy will become a regular.
I love Amy: she was amazing as Fred, although being Illyria didn't really showcase her acting talents.
What the hell has happened to Joss? Does he even speak regular English anymore? That quote made me cringe harder than when I read his writing on Runaways.
(note to Joss: NO TEENAGER SPEAKS LIKE THAT. EVER. PLEASE STOP WRITING COMICS.)
Am I supposed to take Whedon seriously when he says he doesn't know how he manages to assemble a cast of actors that rarely get more than an occasional guest spot on a TV show and who have almost been exclusively employed by him? Is it cute that he acts cutesy and dumb? No. Just say I don't know how I got Olivia Williams to work with the rest of this cast.
@JAMF: I'd rather have Amy Acker in the lead than what's-her-name. Amy's much cuter, too.
Well lets just hope it doesn't turn into Juno style quips and shit like that...
Also wtf is "soup to nuts". I would prefer to keep both my nuts and soup separate.
@Log1c:
"Soup to nuts" is an antique expression meaning "from beginning to end". It refers to the courses of some strange meal that includes nuts.
-Kle.
@danwaterhouse: Out of nine known cast members, only 2 are Whedon veterans.
@Klebert L. Hall: Some meals would conclude with a selection of sweets and nuts, as a sort of post-dessert.
@Aethyr:
I believe it was meant as a joke.
More Amy Acker? Yes please.
@Aethyr: "..although being Illyria didn't really showcase her acting talents"
True, but "Would you like me to lie to you now?" made me all teary and snuffly.
I adore Amy because she doesn't just stand around waiting for her cue - you can see her characters thinking.
@Miranda Kali: Wow, they are the best for handtalkacting! Really!
I keep running the premise of 'Dollhouse" over in my head. i can't help thinking it sounds an awful lot like how readers meet the legendary "Molly" in Neuromancer.
@Belabras: I was more referring to his erratic writing on Runaways. I still can't get over how stupid my former favorite characters sound now.
Dolls and nurses in the future, sign me up! I just hope this isn't a set-up for disappointment when the show gets canceled like half-way through the pilot episode.
Well, Nathan Fillion is still under contract with Fox, so I'm hoping he somehow shows up in this. He also said on his blog recently that he was working on a project he could not name with a girl who was one of the Potential Slayers (the red head). What are the odds that they could both end up back with Whedon?
I'm really just hoping he just stocks the show with all his previous collaboraters.
@Gaambit: Nathan would be talking about his work in Doctor Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, another Whedon project.

@Randomeis: Thanks for the heads up - I somehow missed all this.
I still hold out hope for Nathan getting another network Whedon gig, though.
I think Amy had a passel of chillun during the last few years so maybe she didn't really need to act as well?
Here's hoping she's still got game!
