Please Don't Let Arnold Schwarzenegger Do Terminator 4

The producers of the fourth Terminator movie dismissed rumors that Arnold Schwarzenegger would put in an appearance in the film months ago, but now Arnie himself is stirring them up again. He told a reporter that he hasn't had any talks with anybody, but he's really interested in appearing in T4, as long as it's shot in California. There are so many reasons why this would be a really, really bad idea.

Let's leave aside the fact that Arnie is kind of old to play a super-cyborg from the future. The fact that he's had so much plastic surgery could be a plus, since his face now looks completely artificial and unreal. But he also bears very little resemblance to the character he played in the original Terminator, and why would the machines create two slightly different models of cyborg? Why wouldn't each model be totally different?

Plus there's the fact that Arnie would either have a cameo — which would most likely be shoehorned in — or the whole movie would be rewritten around him instead of Christian Bale and Sam Worthington. I'd much rather have the film revolve around the human characters this time around.

But the main reason I hope Arnie was misquoted, or ends up not being in the movie for some reason, is because the Terminator franchise has moved on. It's no longer just a starring vehicle for Arnie, thanks to the moderately successful TV show. I'd really like to see the next movie continue that trend, because it's a more interesting universe if it doesn't all revolve around Ahhnuld. Plus I already see enough of him as my governor.

  • Well, he could play the fat, bloated human with an ego problem that bases the design of the Terminator skin on an idealized version of himself, as a way to "live forever" though his creation.

Then Skynet becomes selfaware, and the prototype Terminator kills Arnie.

    That'd be awesome.

Needs Jean Claude Van Damme instead. Or Dolf Lundgren.

  • I vote for all-cgi arnie! He just does the voice. It would probably be more expressive and lifelike than shooting the actor/governator himself.

Aside from age (which is why his face has changed but essentially same, so I call "bullshit" on your plastic surgery diss) you don't have a single good reason. Since when does a series ABOUT KILLER CYBORGS need to be more about humans? What next? Should Sherlock Holmes stories be less about detection?

But don't worry, "Movies You Didn't Know Were Science Fiction" will always be the lamest post ever on IO9.

  • The TV show sucks.

I've always thought that there was potential for a Terminator movie where Arnie wasn't in fact a terminator, but a human that gets used as the template for his terminator line. Imagine the pathos of John Connor fighting alongside a grizzled Sarge type, knowing that he's destined to be captured, scanned, and dissected, and that this is one thing he can't change because otherwise he loses his robotic protector from T2.

  • Notice he says, "If it's shot in California?"
Reason being....that as governor... he can't be seen as participating in a production that is shot primarily out of state. Californian's would howl.

  • @Dunny0: Yes! He could be the Noonian Soong of the Terminator series. Which must make Summer Glau...ummm...Lal?

  • @Dunny0:
    Yes, agreed.

    (checks post tag)
Nope, not under RANT like it should be...

@kstop: Given he has to send his dad back to create him and die and tell him, he probably can shrug the doomed officer off.

Ew. You just made think what if every Terminator was based on a human they caught and killed? That means Cameron was based on a real 16-year-old girl.

  • It's time for the franchise to move away from him. I mean, if the next Terminator film deals with the rise of the human resistance, then we don't need Arnie; if you actually paid attention in the first film, Reese tells Sarah that the first Terminators had rubber skin and were easily detectable.
They didn't start off as Arnie; they became Arnie.

And even then, they didn't all look like him; again, watch the first film. The scene when the Terminator infilitrates Reese's camp? That's not Ahhnuld.

  • @Macloserboy: Did you miss the "this time around" bit? After three movies about killer-bots heading back in time to try, once again, to avert their own future destruction and causing no end of retconing, maybe it is time to set a movie during the damn war! There would still be tons of killer bot thinggies, but we might get a bit more coherent story out of the affair.

Also, I always thought of the first Terminator movie was less about the ubercool cyborg, and more about just trying not to be killed by it - you know, the fear the humans had of it. One could probably say the same about the second one too.

But that's my take on it.

Also, not to get too nit-picky, but the only cyborgs (in the movies) are the Arnold Terminators; the rest have no living skin.

@DCGaymer: I'm thinking more he's still the governor and obviously can't go to Australia for weeks to shoot.

  • Shouldn't the Header be...Please Don't Let McG do Terminator 4?

  • Image of Macloserboy Macloserboy at 11:43 AM on 04/23/08 *

@Dunny0: I get that, but the movie is call "Terminator" not "Human Resistance." It's about unstoppable killer cyborgs, first and foremost.

  • I'd be much happier if i heard Michael Biehn was going to be in it. I always loved Reese-- and that the character was essentially repeated in Aliens

  • The movie is being directed by McG... your aggression towards Arnold is really misplaced. As far as him not fitting the role anymore, if you can't figure out a creative way to place him in, you're quite possibly the most unimaginative sci-fi fan ever.

  • Given he has to send his dad back to create him and die and tell him, he probably can shrug the doomed officer off.

Or you could say that he gave his dad the chance to meet the woman he loved.

That means Cameron was based on a real 16-year-old girl.

    Dude, she's 27.

The T1 Ah-nold looked totally different than the T2 one. There's no reason why the T4 models shouldn't be completely different. As long as there's hundreds of HKs roaming around killing all humans I'll be happy.

  • @Macloserboy: I don't know, that first one sure seemed to be about the people running away from the unstoppable killer cyborgs.

  • @Dunny0: Wrong-o, DunnyO. The Terminator that breaks into the shabby refrigerator box town that Reese is living in (remember the kids watching the "TV" with a fire burning in the tube?) that Terminator is the same model as Ahhhnode, but a different face and body.

  • @Garrison Dean, King Awesome: And Transformers was about The Beef trying to get a date.

The first one was about running away from the cyborg, the second was about the cyborg fighting a robot, and the third was... I donno. Cyborg vs. Robot again? I didn't actually see all of it.

  • @kstop: That was actually a deleted scene from Terminator 3. Arnold was Sgt. Candy who I guess the future model was based on. It's a really goofy scene, because it does not use Arnold's voice.

  • @SavannahJack: Good catch! Obviously, I needs must watch the movies again soon.

  • They can put any actors they want in there as long as we finally get a scene of Sarah Connor getting drunk and making out with John Connor in a foxhole on the battlefield of the futuer.

  • @Pinkhamster: Fan of time-traveling incest, are we?

  • Image of Macloserboy Macloserboy at 01:37 PM on 04/23/08 *

@daveNYC: In the context of the show Cameron is 16 so the human they potentially captured, killed and dissected was 16. You do realize I'm talking about the character and not the actress, right?

@Garrison Dean, King Awesome: Obviously, but it all hinges on a killer cyborg.

  • McG is doing T4? I thought he was busy screwing up "Spaced". Super. Just Super. Between this news and Seth Rogen doing the Green Hornet, I just might start giving up on being entertained.

  • Image of zenpoet zenpoet at 01:50 PM on 04/23/08 *

@Dunny0: That would actually fit perfectly. That is the true conceit of man to form a "Perfect" killing machine, and make it an idealized version of himself.

  • Hopefully, Judgement Day will actually happen before this movie is released.
C'mon, Skynet; you can do it!
Say it with me: EX TER MIN ATE!

  • @mindlesspuppet: Did I say Arnold was directing the movie? I don't understand your comment.

  • @blorp:
An all-CGI Aaahnuld, with the voice of Summer Glau!

(Claim it's a firmware problem, and have the bonus of really confusing us poor fanboys...)

  • @Charlie Jane Anders: The biggest concern over the quality of the new Terminator movie should obviously be McG, not that the writers are much to boast either.

Even if you do believe giving Arnold a part would be a mistake (a point many/most would disagree with), it's still barely even an issue. Having Arnold in T4 would give it some credibility if anything. Though, to be honest, I wouldn't want him in it either because it would sort of be like spitting on the real Terminators if he were to partake in this debacle.

  • @Smeagol92055: So, wait... SkyNet was really controlled by the Daleks? Would that mean that the Resistances time travel was really based on stolen Time Lord tech... Or maybe, since Skynet "invented" time travel, it was really based on early DARDIS' designs.

So, where does the Doctor figure into all this?

  • One of the reasons that Arnold should be left out of T4 was that T3 was terrible party b/c of Arnold's political interests. I mean, come on! It is so obvious that SkyNet was supposed to represent American at it worst so having John Connor seen rallying the troops standing in front of a tattered American flag was just stupid.
One of the reasons I enjoyed the TV series was b/s I could pretend movie 3 never happened.

  • @Dunny0: That's a lot like the Aliens movie with the Bishop android idea! Good thinking I would like it if that happens.

  • I'm more concerned about Ahnuld's hypocrisy. He spends half the time yammering about how violent video games are destroying our children, and now he wants to go and star in a violent summer action movie? How much do you want to bet that he'll also make an appearance in the inevitable video game adaptation, like he did with T3?

    Argh.

  • I would think that a cameo would make sense. It could be something as simple as the Governator being up on the lift getting his oil changed, or we could have a CGI extravaganza with an army of hundreds Ahnolds on the march. As long as it's filmed in Cawleefornia.

  • Image of Macloserboy Macloserboy at 06:27 AM on 04/24/08 *

    @pinkiedeathhead: Ha-ha-ha-ha! Dude, you're funny!

  • There's going to be a Terminator 4? Zut alors!!!!!!!!

  • I've always had a hard time with terminators being called cyborgs. You just slapped skin on a robot. I always felt true cyborgs needed to be augmented biological organisms, like the Bionic Woman or the Borg.
If this new trilogy is supposed to follow adult John Conner, then it had better be more about the people than crazy killer robots. Most of what humanity fights in the future are really dull machine things with laser cannons. The first three movies were "people on the run" films. The next three need to be "we care about the humans winning the war".

Anywho, doesn't Arnie have more important things to do than cameo. You know, like RUNNING the state of CA. I'm gonna be mad if shirks his responsibilities to run off for a week to go shoot.

Unless what he's saying is he's going to step down as governor to get back into movies. That I'd be fine with...

  • Terminator and Arnold go hand in hand...Bottom line.

There's plenty of ways that Arnold could be put into the movie, while still making the resistance the focal point of the movie. For you to say don't let Arnold in the T4 is honestly disrespectful to the man who built the franchise. How old are you anyways? A true fan would never say something so absurd.

And by the way, raving about the tv show makes you look even more foolish...That show is complete GARBAGE.
