The Cloverfield Ending That Went Too Far For Theaters

The DVD of January's monster-smashes-NYC movie Cloverfield came out yesterday, and it includes two alternate endings of the movie, along with some deleted scenes. Here's one of the alternate endings, courtesy of Yahoo movies, including a new Coney Island scene. It's not that different, but it's worth watching to appreciate how much restraint the final edit of Cloverfield shows, since this version seems to spell things out a bit more, and is a maybe bit more over-the-top than the theatrical version. The other deleted ending includes guys digging out the camera from the rubble. [Yahoo movies, via Sliceofscifi]

  • I always get excited when I see Alternate Ending on a DVD and then am perpetually disappointed when I remember that by "alternate" they mean "we changed a line or two of dialog, or made a scene longer."

I wish they'd shoot real alternate endings for a change!

  • Here comes the "Cloverfield SUCKED!" crowd in 3... 2... 1...

  • Has anyone watched this on DVD yet who go motion sickness in the theaters? I watched it in the theaters and liked it but got really sick watching.

If the DVD doesn't have the same effect I might buy it.

  • DVD doesn't have that same effect, it's easier to look away and get your bearings to keep from getting sick.

  • Cloverfield didn't make me motion-sick at all.

But don't get me started on the last Bourne movie.

  • Saw this last night for the first time. I liked it alot. Nice not to be disappointed.

I agree the "alternate endings" were a letdown. Color me clueless but I don't "get" how the posted alt1 "seems to spell things out a bit more." And the flash of the camera being dug out in alt2 was no real biggie, though I did wonder exactly how much time had passed since the explosion and discovery. Do batteries run that long? And who hit pause/resume?

  • @extracrispy: Cloverfield SUCKED... me into a great time for a couple hours. Loved it.

  • "since this version seems to spell things out a bit more"

Wow.. that is spelling things out more?

  • My wife still got motion sick during our DVD viewing last night. Granted, she's pregnant, so that helps.

Oh, and Cloverfield detractors can suck it. The ending score alone is worth the DVD purchase.

It does seem more over-the-top, and the Coney Island clip was replaced. Definitely like the theatrical version better.

  • "this version seems to spell things out a bit more"

    Such as?

  • @The Blow Leprechaun: 28 Days Later comes to mind for movies with real alternate endings.

    God I loved that movie.

This one too... Still haven't picked it up on DVD, trying to hold out for bluray, cause I'm a gadget whore.

  • I expected that chick to say "I'm sooo scared" and have a little drop fall from her nose. Very Blair Witch-esque.

  • Still no desire to see it.
I prefer my disasters cold and impersonal.

  • What... what did this spell out that the theatrical ending didn't?

  • @CJA: What the hell! This video is all jerky and it "hangs" at least twice... What's wrong with your site and your crappy conversions to flash!
I, for one, demand a refund!

    hehehe...

Seriously, though: Add me to the "spells what out" list of the clueless and lost.

  • cloverfield was a fucking failure of epic proportions, especially all the bullshit backstory viral crap that they tried to put out on the net.

Ruined what could've otherwise been something interesting.

  • @Sturm Truppen:
Not being sarcastic, but am I the only person who had no idea there was viral backstory for the movie?

    Honestly, I had no clue.

    Now I feel left out.

  • @Dunny0: Can't wait for this on Blu-Ray. I don't care if it was meant for HD/DVD originally, get it out on Blu, NOW!

Oh and I wantz Tranzformerz Blu Pleeze?

  • Remember Butterfly Effect? That DVD came with two very different versions. The non-theatrical one dealt a lot more with how the main character's father had the same abilities, and the ending was completely different.

    SPOILER

Rather than watching a video of that party and telling the little girl he hated her and never wanted to see her again, he watches a video of his own birth. Then, as a fetus, he strangles himself with his umbilical cord. Something that has apparently happened to the mother repeatedly in the past. It's a much darker end to the character, and kind of silly.

  • Still need to buy it, and I absolutely second that the final score is worth the price of admission.

Makes me wish for an old-school Toho style sequil.

  • I Am Legend had an honest-to-goodness alternate ending.

  • @Garrison Dean, King Awesome: It was an HD-DVD? Bah!

I wonder if there's some linux magics that'll get the HD drive from a 360 working on a PS3. Maybe if I route it through the Hisenberg Compensators and reverse the electron flow...

Maybe we'll get Transformers Blu in time for Transformers 2. It is the format that Bay wanted. The format of awesome.

  • @Dunny0: You're speakin my language pal. Awesome.

IT never came out on HD DVD, but was on a long list of great films that were supposed to be HD/DVD that I'm sure had a lot of people working on the transfers who had a really bad day that started with the phrase. "What do you mean, DEAD?!"

So don't go looking for it and keep your 360 seperated from your precious PS3. Getting those two together would be like sending your virgin daughter off to prom with a guy who's wearing a baseball cap with his tux.

  • @Garrison Dean, King Awesome: As someone who wore converse with is tux, I take great exception to your last statement.

Hopefully it'll get moved over to Blu soon, instead of being left out there non-HD. I really, really want to see all ten seconds of the creature in HD. And maybe a the high res I'll finally notice that thing that supposedly falls in the background of the final scene.

  • i liked the coney island ending, since you get the "oh look, there's the satellite falling" bit if you're paying attention. i suppose this one maybe makes it a bit clear that they're all dead they're all dead dave they're all dead, but i prefer the theatrical one, i think.

  • I saw it last night on DVD.

No motion sickness here. I thought the movie was very effective.

  • @The Blow Leprechaun: I Am Legend delivered on that.

  • I haven't even gotten the DVD yet (will be picking it up tomorrow), but I actually sought the movie out online and downloaded it just so I could watch it until the DVD was in stores.

I have since watched it 19 times. I think this may be my alltime favorite "giant monster" movie.

  • Hahahaha... took 17 posts for someone to say CLOVERFIELD sucked. And yet, the sentiment was never repeated...

Who sucks now? And the answer is not me...

  • Not going to say the movie sucked, but I'm not the most amazing either. IMO, it was an interesting take on how to do monster movies. Shaky cam made me sick in the theater, it probably didn't help that my blood sugar was low... I'll probably rent it just to watch it once more.

Other than the alternate endings, does the DVD have any interesting extras... maybe something that I don't know, explains what the hell was really going on? I know what happened, but I want to know "what happened" if you catch my drift.

  • @Mantis: Extras reveal insight into the nature of the beastie. The making of stuff is interesting as well.

  • So ... the big difference is the different video clip at the end? I guess?

@extracrispy: Wouldn't say it sucked, might say it was overrated. I didn't really like most of the principal characters, and my suspension of disbelief suffered at various points. I'd probably have hated The Blair Witch Project, though, of which Cloverfield seems reminiscent.

  • I've never seen Cloverfield, but I've already decided that it sucks.

    Viva la internet!

  • It's been a while since I saw the movie but I seem to think this ending makes it more clear that they didn't survive the blast -- there seems to be more images of them actually being hit with rubble. Maybe that's what they meant by 'spelled it out more' or maybe I'm just seeing things.

  • @TommySez:
Oh my God, I know exactly what you're talking about! I almost lost my dinner during Bourne Ultimatum, the damn camera-work was so frenetic!

  • i for one had a blast at this thing in the theatre-- of course i was very "good" about it and avoided spoilers, innernertz discussions, viral crap, etc. So what i got was a pretty harrowing ride through a monster movie. very satisfying.

@Dunny0: wearing Chucks with a tuxedo is totally different than wearing a baseball cap. See, one wears shoes w/ a tux anyway, so you are still maintaining the Spirit of the Thing, and not detracting from the daughter's evening wear & special night. Baseball caps, however, are not meant to be worn indoors. Hence, not appropriate for evening wear. The Chucks have been rocked with suits for awhile (see for instance the cover of Blondie,Parallel Lines).

Most importantly, baseball-hats-as-fashion is really the stuff of children, unless you're a pro-baller or doing yard work. sorry, my nerdy Charlies: baseball hats get put in the closet when you turn 25. They're for little girls and boys. A-and if the young man in question doesn't have the decency & respect for my daughter to observe etiquette and dress like a Man when he picks her up, then he will be turned away from my door.

  • @regis:

    Man, talk about subtle.

  • If there was ever a movie that absolutely NEEDED to have it's "alternate" ending shown instead of the one that ended up being shown in theaters, it's Series 7.

It's a great low-budget flick from the early-to-mid '90s, with a great social commentary, but the theatrical ending carried a fraction of the impact that the "alternate" ending on the DVD had.

Gotta love it when a film includes an indictment of the audience watching it.

  • @Ronestar: Cool, I'm going to have to check it out then.

  • Cool stuff. I think if they had used this, and then cut to the theatrical Coney island scene, I would've liked that the best.

My favorite aspect of the movie is that they didn't let you off the hook with a "they lived happily ever after" ending. I kinda don't want too much restraint...

  • I'm confused, I saw it in Australia (being Australian and all it seemed the way to go) and the ending I just saw above is identical except it cuts to the ferris wheel for the Coney Island scene instead of the train station, at what point does the American version 'end' before the final happy footage?

Likewise the Butterfly Effect mentioned above, when I saw it in the movies it ended with the self strangling fetus scene, which was silly, but also creepy as hell and seriously freaked out my pregnant wife at the time :p

So do all American endings get neutered like this!?!?

Has someone compiled a list about this?
