Summon your robot spiders, fire off your long fang attack, then unleash the Omega Maneuver. Or just fry your enemies' brains with a psionic blast. Whatevs. Villainous MMORPGers will have a few new ways to strive for global domination when City of Heroes/City of Villains releases the Wolf Spider and Blood Widow epic villain classes later this spring. The new archetypes are part of Issue 12: Midnight Hour, the latest free content pack and upgrade for the venerable superhero MMORPG. Check out the trailer below for the lowdown on epic villain archetypes.
Branching level paths, new powers and unique costume options for villains are just a few of the additions in store for CoH fans. Episode 12 will also feature a set of missions that will send heroes and villains through time to ancient Rome to aid the Midnight Squad. New super powers will be unlocked for the game's pre-existing archetypes, and a host of tweaks and improvements to gameplay will make it even easier to save (or destroy, as you prefer) Paragon City.

Sometimes I wish I was still in to this game.
Wait... people still play this?
Nice try... and I suppose you want us to believe there are still Matrix Online players, too...
I am KIDDING. That is HUMOR.
YEEEEESSSSSSS.....
I mostly play on triumph, but I might stop by Infinity with ElectraWoman to say hi.
I'm still thinking WTF in regards to the Rome stuff.
An outer space adventure would have been more interesting.
The Roman thing doesn't thrill me. I would have preferred an outer space setting.
@Emilia:
I stopped playing this year, but if they finally added that Moonbase/Space zone I'd be back in a second.
Hmm. I might have to pop back in, hit villain level 50... or was it 60?
I'm really looking forward to Champions online though. It's pretty much the same game, but with fully customizable powers from the visual effects to the practical effects. It is being made by the former devs of City of Heroes/Villains. When you create a hero, you create a villain to thwart as well (Or it is automatically created, I dunno.)
It's based of an old pen & paper RPG that I never heard of but sounds interesting.
@Ghede: Champions isn't "an old pen & paper" as it is still in publication. And if you are into P&P, you should look it up, it's quite a robust system.
I am happy that I play this game, they just do so much for the community... I just wish I had more time to play it. Still don't have a level 50, after YEARS of playing.
@Emilia: I've always wanted to see above level 50 content that took the form of cosmic space adventures, like Silver Surfer, that sort of thing. The Rome thing is a little random, but I think it will be cool. Also, I have some inside info that suggests CoH might be seeing some ancient Egypt themed content at some point in the future as well.
Of course, the big news lately is user-created missions, coming later this year. That could be amazing.
The Champions based MMO would likely have me moving away from COH. I loved playing the original game when I was younger. I keep thinking of picking the game back up (paper version), but lack of time and similarly minded individuals prevents me.
I think I quit and rejoined COH 2 times since I began 2 years ago. I'm finally close to getting my first character to 50.
I should setup a group called the Judean People's Front and then go to ancient Rome/Egypt.
I'm watching the Champions MMO with interest as well. I still think it sucks that Microsoft and Marvel pulled the rug out from under Cryptic, but they recovered well.
<-- COH: a couple of 50s Hero and Villain side. I've done pretty much everything in the game. It's the only reason I quite.
@Emilia: Huh. I joined I think the second or third month COH was out, and my first character is still only 39.
And that was before the bank arbitrarily cancelled my credit card without warning me, meaning I missed my monthly COH payment.
Hey: Beneficial Savings Bank? Run by a bunch of monkeys.
I wish I had time to play this. It was really fun back when I did.
I really don't want to grind up a hero or villain again though.
It would be nice if they'd let you pay a bit extra for an XP multiplier or something. Say, a buck extra per month for a x2. Kick in more money and you get a higher multiplier. Level up to your friends and drop your monthly back down to normal. Something like this would solve a lot of MMO headaches about grinding and falling behind.
I shouldn't be surprised to see so many io9'ers playing CoH. It's a great game. I feel sorry for those millions of WoWarcraft players -- they don't know what they're missing. While they might get the chance to hop on slow-moving griffons, everyone in CoH can fly like a rocket, run at 90mph, or teleport all over the place.
I'm usually on Virtue. Have several characters, but lately I've been playing Boomer Hood the most. (He's a hero -- think 'Robin Hood' with sonic powers.)
@Dillenger69: They did a major overall XP buff a few months ago. The levels fly by these days. Even the 30s and 40s.
@Ed Yeah, its not much of a grind anymore. I don't feel as frustrated these days.
I played COH way back when and I loved COV, but the game was so unstable in that the graphics engine brought pc's to their knees. It was a MMORPG that you didn't have to give your life to, you could play an hour and get in groups and just go on missions. Loved the system. IF it would run good, I would play it again.
I have always been suprised you guys have never covered the SWG emu.
@Priam:
Well, quality has to count for something...
XP buff ... hmm, I have keys for COH and COV.
maybe ...
no
maybe ...
no no no
Champions Online? Meh.
The P&P RPG is a superior system to any other superhero game. However, they're not using the system. No, they're only taking the mediocre background. The system is the one the worst of the CoH "devs" made for their Marvel MMORPG, which got canned by Marvel. I'll check it out, but I'm not going in with blind faith. :\
However, I'm glad to see CoH get some attention here. It's still a great game, and Issue 12 will also be the start of player created content. Yes, you heard that right. :O
CoH is adding User Generated Content.
This is pretty awesome!

As a genre reader and a long time P&P RPG hobbyist, the premise of CoH/V always seemed a little easier for me to believe than WoW. It reminds me of Alan Moore's Top Ten series.
I've been playing off and on for nearly two years now at a friend's (Even though the subscription is on my card?!) house because my own machines were just too primitive to run it.
I haven't leveled past 14 due to my sporadic play and the fact that I keep inventing new superheroes and villains that I want to run. This spreads my work out over a lot of characters. I just love inventing origin stories!
Maybe I'll see some of you on the Infinity servers. I've got too many names to count but keep a look out for Device 5, The Bark of the Silent, Quark Zombie, Robot Lenin, The Lioness of Lagos and the Brain Lich.
It's really cool they are letting players add content to the shared world!
Now only if they had some convenient way to digest user written origin stores to the Web so I can read all the ones that others have written. Half the fun of superheroes is the origin stories. I'd like to read what my fellow players have written up and it's always too hard to keep right clicking on players as they dash or fly by.
I have yet to roll a villian. I spend most of my time on the heroes side, Freedom.
Hakeem, 50, Energy/Energy Blaster
Oper8, 50, Illusion/Empathy Controller
Kaw, 25, Sonic/Sonic Defender
One Stargate Worlds drops.. I'll probably be so long to COH/COV, so I need to make a villian pronto.
