Probably some sort of missile, with Shadowcat inside, headed towards Earth. God, she's like my favorite character...she'd better not die. Even though in Uncanny they mentioned that Colossus "lost the woman he loved." That doesn't bode well.

Come on, easy way out of that for Kitty! She phases through the explosion! (She can do that, right?) She might be propulsed deep into the earth, still phasing and all, then she only has to "climb" back up. They might make everyone believe she died, but then she's brought back without the need for a ret-con or a miracle,

We've known this was going to be the outcome for a few months now. It's just annoying that Whedon brought Pride out of retirement just to kill her off, and this was not too long after having brought Colossus back to life. Some would say that this is star-crossed or Whedon's anti-romanticism (how many of his couples have happy endings?), but this is bumblefuck writing. She gets a hero's finale, sure, but why?

We found out in the last Astonishing (when Kitty tried to phase in and disrupt the circuitry guiding the "missile") that it's a bullet. A big, solid piece of metal they're firing at the earth. Kitty's presumably still in there from having tried to disarm the thing (which ended up not having anything to disarm). If someone doesn't stop the bullet, there are going to be bigger problems than Kitty dying.

They definitely spoiled this a while back in the first "Divided We Stand" issue of Uncanny X-Men.

It is, in fact, an unguided bullet, not a missile or a space ship.

It looks like a mirror shield is being used, although I would expect that to be a nice ellipsoidal or spherical shape.
