Give BSG's Ron Moore Some Career Advice

Battlestar Galactica supremo Ron Moore could be the busiest science fiction producer in Hollywood, if all of his post-BSG projects come to fruition. He's writing at least three big movie projects, one of which is a trilogy. And he has three TV movies in development, including two which are definitely appearing — and any one of those could be picked up as ongoing series. Hollywood being what it is, some of Moore's projects will probably vanish into the murk of development. Which of Moore's pending masterpieces do you hope actually succeed?

  • Ok, the Thing is possible the BEST movie that Carpenter ever did. I'm not sure exactly how a prequal would work (Maybe the Nordic base?) but I'd watch it.

  • ANYTHING but I, Crapbot 2.

  • None of the above. But my advice?

Sex is popular, not soap operas. Don't confuse the two.

  • I'd love to see him do an I, Robot film that actually had something to do with the book.

Hell, Moore doing the Ellison I, Robot script? It'll never happen, but -damn-.

  • The current season of Battlestar will have to improve ten-fold before I start caring about a prequel.

  • Please, no sequels, no prequels, no tie-ins, no crossovers... start over fresh with something new to say.

I realize that sequels mean eyeballs, and sometimes it takes a while to tell a complete story. But there's "completing the story" and then there's "milking this cash cow".

  • My vote? "I, Robot Claudius"

@Belabras: What if the Thing's crewmember got out of the saucer a century earlier and started snacking down on Shackelton's exploration? I can't think of anything else except a really sick'n'twisted version of "Happy Feet".

  • I love BSG, but when it is finished, it should be finished. Everything should be out in the open or deliberately left vague. Also, I'm a little tired of all the remakes and prequels.

So, random new Sci-Fi Trilogy for my vote.

  • Know what would be better than I, Robot? Caves of Steel.

But I voted for Caprica, because I am not yet done with the 12 colonies.

  • The Thing is in Antarctica, so why not The Thing vs Alien vs Predator? It could end with The Thing frozen in the ice for the Norwegians to find.

    @danielhcarroll:

Ignoring the highly Hollywoodized aspects, I thought I, Robot was better than could be expected. But agreed, Caves of Steel could be interesting.

Who would make a good R Daneel Olivaw?

  • Caves of Steel would be good, if dry. Hoping for a new trilogy, hopeing against all odds it will be up to the 1970's era SF for a change.

  • Bleh, I hate mafia movies. So Caprica is out. Virtuality sounds like it could be good. That stargate atlantis episode where Ancients are travelling and keeping engaged via VR was interesting. There were some crappy VR flicks and cartoons done in the 90's, so I wouldn't mind seeing what could be done after a decade.

  • Nooooooooo you people are so short sighted. If anything called for Moore's reimagineering it's Asimov's Robot Books. Ron Moore at the helm of "The Caves of Steel" would be as inspired as Jackcon's LOTR Trilogy, and just as marketable. It would give him more room to explore the while Human/Robot meme he's developed in BSG and do it from a different POV. Gritty Noir Caves of Steel? Can I get a 'HELL YES'? I knew I could.

  • I'm all for either a new sci-fi movie series, or a new interpretation of the I ROBOT books by ASIMOV. He did an excellent job with the concept of human/robots and it would be great to see what he does with that.

I'm skeptical about the VR series, but honestly after BSG, I'll give any of his projects a chance.

  • Agreed with the "no more sequels, prequels, remakes, tweenquels, spinoffs, etc."

With rare exception, that is exactly the sort of crap that's killing filmed science fiction. Something new, whether it be a new television series or film trilogy. Anything new.

Add something fresh to the genre, rather than just reheating leftovers or building on top of someone else's franchise.

  • I'd back Caves of Steel taken seriously.

  • @extracrispy: bite your tongue. This season is great so far.

I had to vote for Caprica, being a hardcore BSG fan.

  • Of all the episodes Moore wrote for Star Trek "Looking for par'Mach in All the Wrong Places" was the only one which contained enough true Science Ficiton to my liking. The first mini series parts of BSG were fun, but the rest was all soap opera wiht no science in it like much of DS9, unfortunately. I wish that Moore would leave Science Fiction. He's watered down the genre so much that it,s nothing but backdrops.

  • My advice to Ron Moore, cash as many checks as you can, as fast as you can. The dude is the most over rated thing to come down the pike in ages. Caprica... flop. I-Robot... flop. Virtuality... flop. The Thing 2... fixing what ain't broken and... flop. But do tell us what kind of booze you're sucking down, for that is ever so interesting.

  • A Deep Space Nine movie.

    What? ...What?

  • I can't enjoy any show about people "trapped" in virtual reality.

  • @Sharpless: That would be nice. Reuniting the team. Garak, Nog, and Jake.

  • Caprica is a goldmine of Asimov ideas.
Robots created to serve man, rebelling, etc.
Kill two birds with one stone on that show.

  • @lazlopink: That 'over-rated dude' has a Pulitzer on his mantle and has redefined science fiction for television.

I'm guessing his bank account is just fine - no rush on those checks.

  • Once again I'm reminded of how much I love reading the comments here. :)

My tuppence: No more prequels. I'm tired of the constant back-steps Sci-fi seems to be taking. Enterprise was a huge mistake, as were the Star Wars prequels. For those reasons alone I can't get excited over Caprica or a proposed prequel to The Thing.

My money's on a new trilogy because there's a sore lack of episodic epics being released in cinemas right now.

  • @Ryan H: I agree 100%

  • My wish is: I want him to do a deal with HBO or Showtime to produce a cop show based on Greg Bear's Queen of Angles. The transhuman issues are there, the AI is there, the space exploration, the relationships and crime. I think this guy could do the story justice, and he could show Mary Chow in all of her pitch-black full frontal, glorious nudity. Besides, series TV offers more to fans than just a 2 hour movie that takes way too long to make. Once this new series get off an running we could get years of it.

  • @kang: Sounds like scifi Gilligan's Island. Each week the crew will "almost" make it back to the real world, but something goes wrong at the end of every episode and they remain stuck on the island, I mean stuck in VR-land.

  • I'm going to vote for bringing Roland Deschain (The Gunslinger, by Stephen King) to life. The quest for the Dark Tower could be another Ron Moore series with a beginning, middle, and end. It's got a little of everything: the collapse of modern society into chaos, future technology used for evil, a little wild west, giant cyborg bears, parallel Earths, witches and magic, monsters, you name it, King threw it in there.

  • I agree with Tim Faulkner's comment - "none of the above". Although a Sci-fi version of Gilligan's Island doesn't sound bad - it wasn't on the list.

  • Image of braak braak at 06:13 AM on 04/30/08 *

Shouldn't it be called, "We, Robots"?

  • @Outlandish: Although a Sci-fi version of Gilligan's Island doesn't sound bad

    Isn't that LOST?

  • @extracrispy: Which one is supposed to be Mary Ann?

  • A little less soap opera/c-span in space. A little more pewpewlazorz.

Something original please. Too many damn remakes/rehash's/sequels/prequels. We've been riding on previous genius' coattails for too long. Time to slap your generation in the face and wake 'em up.

  • Wait, I thought the sci-fi trilogy was for Tom Cruise's shingle, UA...or does that fall under the Universal banner as well?

  • Ohhhh. Hard choice. I'm going with CAPRICA, because I want RDM to be involved at least as producer. But the new trilogy is intriguing - not to mention a THING prequel. I love Carpenter's THING...too much!

  • @Outlandish: LOL! Claire?

  • @MISS MERCY STREET:

yeah i'm quite sure he's rich as sin and yes he does have a shiny prize. so he's rich and lauded therefore he is good tada! as for redefining sci-fi for television, if you consider taking a great start and turning it into a frustrating, bombastic and nonsensical melodrama, well that's a definition of sorts.

of course i might be biased. as a canadian actor i do sort of resent moore's and eick's self-righteous hypocrisy and ripping off of my peers.

  • I think he should do a space, game movie like Supreme Commander or Starcraft. Who wouldn't love a movie with big giant robots or super intelegent aliens that can shoot stuff out of their hands? Neither of these games have too much plot so it would be easy to make a TV series or a movie and still stay faithfull to the story.
Caves of Steel would be fantastic but the books are so good I am sure that anyone trying to make a movie would mess it up.

  • Come on, everyone says they love Carpenter's The Thing so much (as well they should, it is one of the best horror/sci-fi films evah), but listen to what you're saying! You like it so much, you'd love a prequel? You do realize that it'd be done by people who had absolutely nothing to do with the Carpenter original, right? So it wouldn't be ANYTHING like it, based on the experience we've had with that sort of thing in the past. Instead, it is likely to urinate fiercely on whatever was gold about the original. AvP certainly comes to mind! Leave Carpenter's The Thing alone!
(But go ahead and make a prequel to the Howard Hawks-produced original original, The Thing from Another World. I'm cool with that :-D )

  • @Xenocidal Maniac: I bleeve you is confoosin The Dark Tower and His Dark Materia (the Golden Compass was out last year, nicht?)
I found it hard to choose from the list provided, since a large percentage is "WTF?" - I mean, "an unnamed scinece fiction trilogy" ... Winkin Blinkin and Nod? Or Restoration "that we don't know much about"?
I like the guy, but sheesh, give a bit more information please. Otherwise, it's no wonder we end up with BSG prequels and II-Ripoff Asimov's Corpse.
    Thank you verra mush.

  • Eh, the only advice I'd offer is to pace yourself. You're a talented man, and I'd personally rather have only a few things from you ever so often for the next 40+ years than a bunch of stuff from you for the next 5 years before you (insert vice) yourself into obsolescence.

Wrestle the American rights to "Life on Mars" away from David Kelly if you want a REALLY great franchise.

  • I LOVE "The Thing" but I do hope they never do make a movie of it as a sequel because the ending for the movie was AWESOME! Prequel, oh yeah!
