Finally, An Alien Invasion Movie That Shows The Awful Aftermath

onioni.jpgWhat happened after the tripods were defeated in War Of The Worlds? Was it business as usual for Earthlings? Was there looting, murder and mayhem, or had humans learned to love thy neighbor? How does a society regroup from an interplanetary war? Marc Guggenheim's post-apocalyptic comic Resurrectiondeals with just these questions. And as io9 predicted it's getting turned into a movie that follows a group of survivors as they try to reclaim what's left of their lives after a long war against "The Bugs," an alien race. Cover pics after the jump.

Resurrection takes place after "The Bugs" have left, but not without forever changing the face of the planet and its inhabitants forever. The attackers may be gone but now the characters have to deal with establishing order, power struggles, left-behind alien technology and decide what to do with alien stragglers and POWs. Finally an alien invasion movie that's going to focus on the people and not the fireworks. Watching downtown NYC get destroyed by monsters and aliens is always a treat but what happens afterwards? Cormac McCarthy's novel The Road (which is also being made into a movie) deals with these questions but it's exciting to see what veteran comic writer Guggenheim comes up with.

  • I might have to pick this up next time I hit up the comic shop...

  • Wow... in a bizzare chance, I JUST bought 'The Road' before sitting down in front of my laptop...

  • I thought I had outgrown comic books. Thanks for showing me I haven't made any progress in 15 years.

  • WHAT!, another apocalypse!? That's the third one this week dammit!

I guess we all fantasize about living in a world where other people are scarce, and our problems can for the most part be shot with a very large gun. Or flamethrower. Or rocket-launcher....

  • @russdanger: Yes, they are what people call "the good ol' days".

  • The art looks like a high school class training exercise.
    Feh.

  • I've longed for a movie on just this subject. What happens after Jeff Goldblum and company unleash the worst Mac virus ever on the aliens in ID4? Do all the countries that united to defeat the aliens stay friendly? Who cleans up after the mess in War of the Worlds?

  • I read "The Road" because I liked "No Country For Old Men".
Don't get me wrong though, Wouldn't we all like to see the death of taxes, credit card bills etc.

I checked out the online first issue, but have not had a chance to read the series in paper form yet. I was very much impressed with the story and drawing, and think the subject is rife for exploration. Here is to hoping the movie doesn't have Tom Cruise in it.

  • @Castle1914: I am as old as dirt. I'm older, I'd wager than anyone on this forum and I'm re-discovering "comic books" becase they're better now than when I was a kid.

  • Kinda reminds me of the premise behind DMZ, in a way... If you're not familiar with it, DMZ is a comic about the realistic effects of modern US civil war and is based in NYC.

    @phoghat: I don't know if you're older than me, Castle1914... unless 1914 is your birth year. ;-)

  • Gundam has covered it all. ALl you need to do is jack one of the bug's giant mechas, which oddly enough lack any sort of lock out technology like access codes, biometrics, or key&lock.

Also, Neo-Genesis Evangelon, since the events happen after the first major attack.

  • There was a movie called "The last train" (The Canadian title was "Cruel Earth"). It about a small band of Asteroid impact survivors. They survived by being 'frozen' in a subway tube and emerged many, many years after the fact.

For a British made for TV mini series, it was pretty good.

  • The US Government takes control of all Tripod tech and the Cold War ends before world war II starts and the nazis are never defeated... well that is a hell of a premise isn't it.

  • I've checked out the book and I'm loving it. I look at it as being The Walking Dead sans Zombies. Real compelling stuff thus far. I'm always hesitant to see movie licensing when a title is in its infancy.

  • What happens next: The "bugs" realise that ID4, War of The World (a.k.a Battlefield...New Jersey) lied to them, and there really are other countries.

  • Oooh, aftermath is nice. Very good setting, I think, and underused. d20 Apocalypse, a subset of the Future campaign rules, has a number of sample settings (plague, bug-alien invasion, and - my favorite- Rapture) that set you up to explore the world after we collectively bite it. Along with some fun rules, etc, it has some of the most creative campaign elements to come out of WotC. "and then what happens....?" is a very fun question to ask.

  • @EBone: There was to be a sequel to ID4, even some scenes were shot. However, it died...

For a good TV series was the British Survivors. Not an alien attack but a man made plague. Same out come of having to rebuild society. The first season / series was great. Do yourself a favor and stop there.
