Here's the first teaser trailer for August's Babylon A.D., the troubled Vin Diesel future dystopia movie based on a French graphic novel. It looks as pretty as you'd expect from director Matthieu Kassovitz (Gothika), and the scenes of Russia and China sliding into chaos look alarmingly lifelike. Plus, Vin Diesel is still mostly bald and charmingly thuggish, and we finally get to see Michelle Yeoh. I'm still cautiously optimistic. Click through for a gallery of new stills.
Here's the official synopsis:
Veteran-turned-mercenary Thoorop takes the high-risk job of escorting a woman from Russia to China. Little does he know that she is host to an organism that a cult wants to harvest in order to produce a genetically modified Messiah.

I hope this brings Vin Diesel back to his Pitch Black acting form. The man's good as Find Me Guilty readily attests to.
I watched that video on mute, but the sad this is, my brain started to fill in the standard action noises when they were needed, started silent, built up, boom, boom, boom, type shit...
In any case, I'll probably rent it.
It's a great change from his stream of Mr. Nanny rip-offs.
@urukhaifive: I totally want Vin Diesel to be my nanny.
Nice. I can't wait to see it. My Altar of Vin in my closet started to glow last night in anticipation of a trailer.
Seriously, this is gonna be awesome. Name one, ONE bad movie that was released in the waning days of summer.
So the Chronicles of Riddick wasn't grim? Or was it not a dystopia?
Underverse sounds pretty dystopic. And grim.
Maybe he's going to play a nanny in this too... sick!
The way I see it, any movie that INVOLVES Vin Diesel is INSTANTLY a "dystopia grim enough for Vin Diesel."
@G for GRENADE:
*dark mood music*
*images of destruction in space*
In this world, where planets battle for control of the interspace shipping zones, only one man can conquer...
*cut to a retro-futuristic suburban house with three little kids standing in front, accompanied by a sudden shift to light-hearted and airy music*
THE BABYLON CHILDREN
So it occurs to me that they're going for an action movie instead of a Sci Fi movie as the only thing in it that's vaguely Sci Fi is the injector in one scene.
@Garrison Dean, King Awesome: You missed the Pacifier, did you?
And as a huge fan starting all the way back with The Iron Giant, I hope this does in fact bring him back around.
Sure there is a lot of hate against the guy, but seriously, he is genetically perfect for every kick ass action role. Crazy stair, deep voice, muscular. Acting ability. What else is needed?
I totally want Vin Diesel to be my nanny too. He's pretty fun to watch.
@zenpoet: Paciwha?
*sigh* how many times are we going to have to sit through the whole 'genetically modified messiah' thing?
sweet I am looking forward to this
@Smeagol92055: As many times as I've had to put up with the whole "OMG Zombies!" thing.
@Garrison Dean, King Awesome: Deny, deny, deny. Well, it worked for Ollie North, let me know how it goes for you.
and Kanye still bites it! See, I just can't let it go, how much of a douchenozzle am I?
@zenpoet: If you are referring to a Sandwich made of Creativity and Success, then indeed Kanye West definitely bites it.
@Castle1914: @Smeagol92055: When am I finally going to get my "OMG genetically modified zombie messiah"?
I'm still waiting for the sequel to Chronicles of Riddick
The sad thing is most people are probably going to react to the ultra-fast cutting in the trailer and not the actual content, because it goes by too fricking fast.
Vin Diesel walks in slow mo...EXPLOSIONhuhFLURRYOFBODIESwhuh?!MICHELLEYEOH'SFACEooh. I HAVE TO SEE THIS.
The love of Vin Diesel is all it takes to get a 'star' these days, I see.
@Plague: Clearly not or I would've had one years ago when my heart went a twitter during "Boiler Room".
"...she is host to an organism that a cult wants to harvest..."
oooh, Britney found more work. Good for her.
So, Vin Diesel is chauffeuring the Kwisatz Haderach? Or, to put it another way: "Children of Men" + "The Transporter" + "Dune" = "Babylon A.D."?
The book (Babylon Babies by Maurice Dantec) wasn't half bad, if you like sci-fi noir.
I can't wait...
... to pirate the European full version of the movie. Screw the theaters if they're editing it.
So I take it that attention spans have reached the point that 'splosions even need to be chopped and cut
@Final: TLDNR.
@Dunny0: Now there's a concept...
@Castle1914: "OMG zombies..." Ooh - there's an idea, Vin being the hero in a zombie movie - COOL!
@Charlie Jane Anders: Nanny as in bananny?
Is it me or is Vin looking scruffier than usual?
How can you possibly be cautious? With Vin Diesel and Michelle Yeoh? And surely there will be explosions? It can't fail to be awesome.
@jbq: Yeah, but the more I think about it the more I realize it's Milla Jovovich in, well... Everything she's done.
And I'm okay with that.
If you're going to give the director his props you should say "Matthieu Kassovitz - [La Haine, The Crimson Rivers]" - a much better indication of what he's capable of. La Haine is one of the best films to come out of France in the last 20 years. Crimson Rivers was overwrought but still very good.
The look of the trailer is a bit reminiscent of Children of Men. Here's hoping the trailer was cut to look like a trailer, not what the film is really like.
@Garrison Dean, King Awesome: That would be a tasty sandwich.
Hopefully this movie goes better than most of us are hoping. Reading about the troubles it has had makes me worried.
Why add ridiculous xtreme idiot sports into a movie like this.. snow mobile back flips=lame....
What's next, a cameo by Travis Pastrana in a moto-x aerial tricks/ knife fight...
@nonbreakingspace:
Just play anything by Games Workshop (okay, maybe not the historicals or LotR), and make your own sequel.
