Check out some quality Wolverine zingers in this new trailer for Wolverine and the X-Men. The animated series takes place after Professor Xavier has been attacked by an unknown enemy and left in a coma-like state. His psyche comes back, in giant floating head form, warning the mutants that their future is bleak unless they fight The Brotherhood. Tons of glorious mutants in the trailer after the jump, plus more news on Marvel's plans to release another kiddie-focused animated series.
Magneto's mutant haven, Genosha looks a bit like the emerald city, and Professor Xavier's wizard impersonation isn't doing much to hinder the comparison. There were so many mutants in this clip I lost count, was that The Hulk and burqa sporting Dust? Plus more Sentinels, which the X-Men never tire of fighting. The cartoon series will air on Nicktoon in the summer of 2009.
But if the bleak genocide storyline and running mythology of the X-Men cartoon isn't your cup of tea, there's antoher Marvel cartoon on the way, aimed at a demographic of 6 to 8-year-olds. It's titled the Marvel Superhero Squad and will feature all the greats including, Captain America, Iron Man and the Fantastic Four. They're living in some kind of stylized superhero city and fighting villains like Doctor Doom every week. [Illusiontv and Marvel]

Ouch. The animation looks alternately horrible and cool.
WHY is Wolverine always portrayed as the leader? He's not even that interesting of a character. And his voice actor's broody gruffness got boring about a third of the way through.
This will not end well.
sublety reminding us all, once again, that wolverine is the corner stone of the house of marvel just in case we managed to for get that, somehow, between iterations.
I love the look of the Superhero squad figures. Those and the Galactic Heroes "star wars" figures are great. I had no idea they were making a 'toon from the Marvel set. I have a niece that will love it.
Wolverine's been a cliche for some time, and certainly in all of the "popular" portrayals of him.
Miller's four issue miniseries turned Woverine into a complex and noble character.
The X-Men movies, and so many other portrayals, turned him into not much more than a rage machine. A man with a bad temper that he can't control.
As a Samurai, Wolverine was a great character.
Giant blue floating head you say?
GO GO POWER RAN-GERS!
@Aethyr: He's a very interesting character because he's not a leader. Just some powerful dude they constantly have to keep around to be nice. They have yet to capture the true feral nuttiness and inner conflict of the Canucklhead on film.
@steven522: Have you seen the Indiana Jones ones? They have them at the local pharmacy and I keep wanting to get one.
They also have a pretty wicked Sentinel figure that is to scale. Smiling Sentiel will fuck you up.

This actually looks very entertaining - the White Witch, Maverick, Genosha, Days of Future Past, Mojo, Weapon X. They even got an Ian McKellen sound-alike for Magneto. I'm looking forward to it.
Finally got this to load. Look pretty decent. Mojo, Reavers, Hulk vs Wolverine. not bad.
The font usage is unforgivable though.
@Garrison Dean, King Awesome: At least it wasn't Comic Sans.
I love all the characters, seriously, Mojo?! I mean does that mean my fave longshot would make an appearance?
Very very fun
Is that Dagger sans Cloak [en.wikipedia.org] . WTH they cut out the brother.
It looks like a bit of Age of Apocalypse in the future...could be awesome!
@Aethyr: Absolutely right. The major enticement of Wolverine's character is his outsider, loner status. A Wolverine who leads ain't a Wolverine, eh?
Morph, and Raine :D
I'm convinced
hey everyone, i saw this movie
i got a little spoiler for you. After Xavier appoints Wolerine as the new leader, Cyclops finds a dark corner and cries for the rest of the movie. it's true, i saw it. he keeps mumbling "what have the writers done" and other non sense. Storm secretly cuts herself to express her frustration.
Wolverine was holding Storm up...
by her hair?
Wolverine as the leader?
Cyclops wearing Gambits trenchcoat?
*head explodes*
@slmcdee: No. That's Emma Frost, she runs the Xavier school for gifted youngsters.
@ boombye: I think slmcdee meant the girl talking to Rogue halfway through with the circle around her eye. It could be Dagger, but yeah, I'd have expected Cloak there too...
@Discodave: That'd be Domino, if you're talking about "They're gonna exterminate us!" girl.

Having Wolverine lead the X-Men is like letting Raphael lead the Ninja Turtles. It's both absurd and nonsensical.
But the kiddies like him because he's angry and cuts things.
Hah, nice, they got Domino in it. Buuuut, Wolverine as leader is so over done. Wolverine is like in 10 different X-Teams. We dont need him leading one.
OK, yes, Wolverine as the leader is out of character, but all and all? I think this looks ten times better than that last crapfest of a movie. The simple fact that they are using known mutants rather than generics that the writers pulled out of their asses is enough for it to take the lead.
I didn't see alot of screen time for Storm. I hope she gets to be a little tougher in this series
@MickyK: Well, if anything, she has bigger hair.
@ComicNerd.com: I was just gonna say when did Professor X become Zordon.
@Aethyr: And where there's Domino, theres Deadpool and Cable >:D
The Wolvy-as-leader thing annoys me too: Xavier turns to Wolverine to be leader instead of the one-eyed guy he's been grooming for the role since chuck formed the X-men?!?! Well, at least Cyke's being kept around...
But whatever, I'll happily tune in to see my favourite characters duking it out in anime-stylee. X-Men Evolution ended far too soon...!
I love the X-men. Roll on 2009!
More superheros you say? Well, I'm in.
I recognize that voice! I'll watch anything that Steven Blum voices. He was Spike on the English version of Cowboy Bebop.
Also, I agree that the whole Wolverine leading thing is over done but Cyclops is (and always has been) a huge douche. I'll take claws over his emo, crybaby personality any day.
@ComicNerd.com: Thank you. Thank you.
It looks alright, but the best X cartoon will always be the mid 90s one on Fox.
Best cartoon line-up, plus spectacular cameos and guest appearances. Truest to the comics, too.
Xavier's head floating towards the end... Zordon anyone? I smell a Marvel + Power Rangers crossover.
@Garrison Dean, King Awesome: I have seen "demo pics" of the Indy set, but none locally. Heck, all of the stores that carry toys within 50 miles of me still have not updated their inventory since christmas. I'm currently looking for the Rogue/Gambit set as these are the favorite comic couple of my wife's.
Well, at least Kitty is in it, I guess. But I'm not liking the animation. Why couldn't X-Men Evolution just keep going?!
