Clark May Be Talking To Himself A Lot On Smallville

chloe.jpgLooks like cast members of Smallville are starting to jump ship after the exit of Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum). Allison Mack, who plays sassy Chloe Sullivan, is hinting she may be leaving the show as well. Combined with the fact that Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk's) has only signed on to do a few episodes next season, this spells trouble for Smallville.

2208100757_42535ef045_o.jpgTV Guide reports that Mack still hasn't signed on for season eight. She was using Rosenbaum's departure as leverage, because the studio knows if they lose her, there aren't very many characters left. Michael Ausiello quotes one insider:

If Allison leaves, they've essentially got Lois and Clark left... And that show's been done before.

In fact, the writers will be really screwed if Chloe leaves the show. Who's going to further the plot with her witty reporting and computer hackery? Who will Clark save every now and again when they introduce a pointless, one-episode villain? But most important, who's going to give Jimmy Olsen some lovin'? Sorry it doesn't matter how many Doomsdays you bring in, if Chloe leaves it's only a matter of time before the real money makers walk out the door... oh wait, he already did. [TV Guide]

  • Eff it! it's about time they advanced the plot with Lois and Clark. Who cares if it was done before, it's been done ALOT of times.

I say get rid of Chloe, have her go work for Checkmate. Advance the Lois and Clark angle, but at the same time introduce some others. Superman has ALOT of characters, People are watching it for Superman, NOT for periphery.

  • @spacekicker: I totally agree, and I was hoping they would boot Chloe as soon as Lois started up. It kind of sucks to see Lex go, but getting rid of Lana and Chloe is a good thing.

  • @Priam - I agree, and the more I look into it, lex isn't GONE as much as he is not a regular. I imagine he'll be making semi regular appearances.

  • ive been waiting for chloe to get killed off for a while. im suprised it hasnt happened yet. and i agree, ive been expecting the lois and clark thing ever since she showed up. thats the way the story goes, so continue onward i say.

  • Eh, I wont miss her. Nice having her, but in a season that is supposed to 'bring it all around', I dont mind loosing the 'extra' characters. Focus on Clark, Lois, & Jimmy.

  • What's with all the Chloe hate? I think she's one of the few really smart women on television, and have enjoyed watching her throughout the entire series.

However, I wish Lana had been stomped more by Stampy the Stamping Horse back in season two or three.

The one thing than needs to be done to finally move the show "forward" and bring it to a natural close is obvious:

As much as I'll miss the same establishing shot of cows grazing they have used since Episode 1... Clark needs to get off of the damn farm already! (Oh, and fly.)

  • I'm surprised at all the Chloe hate here, since she is the only likable character on the show, practically.
No matter, this show is crawling its way to the end anyway.

  • I watch this a bit because its on before Scrubs and Supernatural, but where the hell is Lois!?! I'd rather watch her than the rest of em, Chloe is okay, Lana sucks.

Also wtf kind of tangent did this show take? It was normal kind of Superman in a small town and now what has happened...

  • For the record, I dont 'hate' Chloe. I enjoyed her on the show throughout. I just realize that she has to 'go' at some point. So why not now?

  • @syndprod: @Log1c: It's not hate. I would say it's a lack of patience. I kind of want to get to the whole Lois bit. They introduced her, so that's kind of like letting the cat out of the bag within the series. I actually really like Chloe, but she is like a house guest that won't leave.

  • I've been assuming for a long time that it would be the death of Chloe @ Lex's hands that would make Clark finally snap into full on nemesis mode. I like Chloe, but she's not essential.

  • Hold on, this show is still on the air? 8 seasons?

  • > this spells trouble for Smallville.

Just to be clear, it's not THIS that spells trouble for Smallville. It's SO many other things.

  • i figured it all started going south two years ago when they had allison mack show more cleavage.

  • @spacekicker: Honestly, I think at this point people ARE watching more for the periphery than for Superman. Despite being the star, Clark is the weakest part of the show.

  • Keep the focus on Clark, Lois, and Jimmy and end the series with a bang.

  • Hold up. I haven't watched Smallville since, I guess, the second or third season. Then I went away to college and stopped watching much tv. And now I've graduated from college and have started watching tv again. But how is Smallville still on the air?! And more importantly, Lois and Jimmy are characters now?!! That's kickass. Is it any good? Should I watch it?

In other news, recently I rewatched that episode of Lois & Clark where they go all BTTF 3 and some dude tells Lois that Clark is Superman and he does the thing with the glasses. You know the one. But despite being so incredibly memorable, it actually really sucked. I was so disappointed.

  • Am I the only one here who thinks that letting this show emope on after Clark left high school spelled trouble for Smallville?

  • Image of Aethyr Aethyr at 01:10 PM on 05/09/08 *

She reminds me of Veronica Mars. And that's a good thing. Damn, it would really suck if she left. Not that I've been keeping up with Smallville or anything.

  • @Lizzie24601:

i personally think they 7th, and now 8th season of smallville are the 2 best. finally fitting in with the comics better.

  • @Lizzie24601: No no. Getting a Masters Degree would be a MUCH better use of your time.

@daived: I'm not saying your wrong, but I want to be clear on something here:

There is /NOTHING/ inherently wrong with showing more cleavage.

    Moving along now...

  • I have a weakness for cute girls with brains which is why (if I watched Smallville regularly) I would be kinda upset. Also Chloe is much less annoying than Lana and makes me wonder about Clark as if I were in his Kryptonian boot I would have gone after Chloe.

  • What? Haven't they cancelled this joke yet?

  • @Timeshredder: No, you aren't. I've always thought it jumped the shark when Lois showed up.

  • This may be a case of "It's better to burn out than fade away" and wrap-up the current series format.

Maybe its time for Clark to fly up to the "Fortress of Solitude" for a few years.

  • The show has to end with the core Superman characters in place - Clark, Lois, Jimmy, Lex (and whatever happened to Perry White?). Chloe ain't one of em, so she's got to disappear from it somehow.

Like others mentioned, I always thought Lex would kill Chloe. A poetic way to do it would be if Clark couldn't save her without revealing his "secret", motivating him to adopt the superhero identity.

It a show that could have been great, but was mired in poor writing and gimmicks. Still, I mostly enjoyed it, and it had its moments... but really, it's time for it to reach a conclusion.

  • @ejp1082: I also thought Chloe was pretty much set up die. Her death at Lex's hands would set off their war and cause his ascension to Superman.

@Aethyr: Considering she came first I Veronica Mars was always a Chloe spin-off to me. I might have watched it if it were.

And on a personal note, I find the curvaceous Allison Mack hot in land of string bean women (Lana) with fake boobs (Lois).

  • @Aethyr: Funny you should mention it, since Kristen Bell did audition for Chloe's part, which would've been AWESOME. On the other hand, Clark would've fallen for Bell's Chloe instead of Lana and/or Lois, thus making Chloe's "Clark only likes me as a friend" plot element a bust because it'd be less believable.

@ejp1082: Very good comment, but I do believe Chloe has been retconned to the Superman mythology.

Personally I missed the Kents (Jonathan and Martha) but the series did well without them. I did not miss Mr. Whitney "Flash Gordon" Fordman, while I'm on the fence with Pete Ross.

Casting Helen Slater: genius! I hope they bring Lara back. One thing I did not get about the Zor-El episode, though: when Clark had to choose between killing Zor-El or saving the planet from the eclipse (and losing Lara in the process), why couldn't he do both? I mean, they still had Jor-El's knife, no? So couldn't Kal-El kill Zor-El's clone first (which would've taken like what, 2 seconds?) then taken care of the eclipse without having to shatter the blue crystal, hence "saving" his mom Lara? Clark Kent would make a lousy NFL quarterback...

Still waiting to see if they'll stick to their promise of keeping Welling out of the blue and red tights...
